John Lennon's assassin, Mark Chapman, asked the former Beatle to sign a copy of the book earlier in the morning of the day that he murdered Lennon. Police found the book in his possession upon apprehending the psychologically disturbed Chapman. However, the book itself contains nothing that could be attributed with leading Chapman to act as he did - it could have been any book that he was reading the day he decided to kill John Lennon - and as a result of the fact that it was The Catcher in the Rye, a book describing a nervous breakdown, media speculated widely about the possible connection. This gave the book even more notoriety. So what is The Catcher in the Rye actually about? Superficially the story of a young man's expulsion from yet another school, The Catcher in the Rye is in fact a perceptive study of one individual's understanding of his human condition. Holden Caulfield, a teenager growing up in 1950s New York, has been expelled school for poor achievement once again. In an attempt to deal with this he leaves school a few days prior to the end of term, and goes to New York to 'take a vacation' before returning to his parents' inevitable wrath. Told as a monologue, the book describes Holden's thoughts and activities over these few days, during which he describes a developing nervous breakdown, symptomised by his bouts of unexplained depression, impulsive spending and generally odd, erratic behaviour, prior to his eventual nervous collapse. However, during his psychological battle, life continues on around Holden as it always had, with the majority of people ignoring the 'madman stuff' that is happening to him - until it begins to encroach on their well defined social codes. Progressively through the novel we are challenged to think about society's attitude to the human condition - does society have an 'ostrich in the sand' mentality, a deliberate ignorance of the emptiness that can characterise human existence? And if so, when Caulfield begins to probe and investigate his own sense of emptiness and isolation, before finally declaring that he world is full of 'phonies' with each one out for their own phony gain, is Holden actually the one who is going insane, or is it society which has lost it's mind for failing to see the hopelessness of their own lives? When we are honest we can see within ourselves suppressed elements of the forces operating within Holden Caulfield, and because of that I would recommend this thought provoking novel as a fascinating and enlightening description of our human condition. However, beware... for that very reason it is not comfortable reading.

From Holden’s red hunting hat, to Jane Gallagher’s checker playing technique, Salinger wrapped up more than meets the eye into things you never would have dreamed. The main thing that drew me into this story is the realness of Holden’s character. He is a teenage boy with a teenage boy’s mind but seems to have far more common sense than anyone else around him. He is not a jock. He is not a math whiz or a science whiz. He is not really interested in sports. He sort of makes up his own category; a category that I call 'the genuine’. He is on his own a lot and loves it at first, but happiness and love are meant to be shared with others. It has a much less meaning when by itself and he realizes it by the end of the novel. He is growing intellectually little by little throughout the whole book. He realizes what really makes him happy. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone and everyone who would like to read a story that could possibly change the way they view the world. I have honestly laughed outloud to myself as I read this story. Yes, there is talk about drinking, sex, and lots of cussing, but if you are going to avoid reading this story because of that then your missing out on a beautiful masterpiece.

Heres a boy who likes to tell whopping big lies just for the deviltry of it; who likes to snarl and snap; who likes to suppose, though he admits he doesnt have the family brains, that hes smart. But for all the grown-up swagger on the surface, he is still 16 inside. He thinks hes fairly sexy, yet every time a girl has said, stop, he has stopped, and so far theyve all said it. He has a little sister Phoebe, skinny but nice skinny, whom he longs to see again. He mourns his dead brother Allie. He is generous. He imagines himself catching all the people coming the rye and saving them from falling off a cliff. He tells the story himself; tough and tender, frown and smile, bitter and sweet. Its a sort of lost week end; its a boy who cant go home again; he belongs to a lost generation and lives in a world he never made. It reminds us of significant conclusions reached by other writers in our time. But besides that, and despite your hoots of laughter at Holdens indomitable speech, this is in essence the tragic story of a problem child, unless indeed its an indictment of a problem world. Month in, month out, novels dont come much better.

I can see why there has been a love/hate relationship with the book since before it was published, primarily because of the smug, condescending attitude of the narrator. I just didn't get it, & am not surprised that he never wrote another; especially considering that JD Salinger did not like or appreciate criticism. I fail to see why it has been labelled as "great" American literature; I guess you had to be there (USA mid 20th century). It certainly fails in comparison to "To Kill a Mockingbird", but then again it is obviously a matter of taste & preference. I wouldn't recommend it, but don't let that stop you. The only good thing about it was that it is less than 200 pages, & thus a quick read: hold your nose & dive in - it will be over in no time at all.

detailedReviews 104: content: I vaguely remembered reading this in high school, but felt like a revisit was in order, as this book is considered a classic. There is a world of difference reading this at seventeen and at seventy. At seventeen, I'm sure I identified somewhat with the protagonist, Holden Caulfield. His battle for identity and meaning, his struggle with grief, his lack of connection with his parents are the stuff of teenage legend. But as an older man, I really just wanted him to stop feeling sorry for himself and to get his act together. I could not easily set aside the incredible waste of human talent and intelligence, knowing that life requires both. And I guess that's pretty much why this work is considered a classic-the generational divide is the Grand Canyon of literature. I'm not sure I would recommend this for high school reading when other "coming of age" stories are available (Joyce's "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," for example), but with the right classroom guidance, Salinger's work could be instructive.
