In my view, this is all you need to prepare for the ielts exam if you have decent/moderate english speaking skills(and probably even if you don't, you will just have to practice more). This book will prepare you for the exam well. It has about 8 chapters of 3-5 pages each in the listening, writing, reading and 4 chapters for speaking. This includes one chapter each for general training reading and writing out of the 8 chapters each for reading and writing sections (So Read.-7+1, Writ.-7+1). It comes with a CD with lots of audio samples for you to practice. It has 8 academic level and 2 general training mock tests. These chapters contain exercises to correct common errors committed, utilise the tips given to perform better and give practice for the type of questions that come in the exam. The number of exercises in each chapter is sufficient. The lessons are highly detailed/focused and they help a lot. And the tips are really useful. It even gives you tips to improve your general english writing, reading, speaking, listening skills which you could utilise even after the exam.
This book helped me to prepare for IELTS from scratch. I new nothing about it. But with the help of just this book, I was able to go for the exam very confidently and was able to prepare for and cover all aspects of the exam.
Doing at least one mock test before the exam helps with time management and what to expect in all sections especially the listening one. I didn't practice any mock tests, so had a few surprises come my way in the exam. But overall I managed well.
Overall I feel that this is a comprehensive book for ielts which covers all aspects of the exam:- describes the exam and its components/sections, chapters for practice and improvement, mock tests for practice of complete exam in one go. And it is thorough in its contents.
P.S. 1. The listening test consists of one single audio where you will have to keep your headphones(provided by your centre) on your ears for the whole time duration of the listening test. This is because the audio is played only once and you can't pause the audio when you please. But in the audio itself, the speaker will give you some time, around 1-2 mins before and after each section's audio for you to read the questions beforehand and then revise your answers afterwards respectively before he/she starts to speak again. So basically pauses/breaks are already included in the audio itself.
2. Also one thing I found useful is to transfer the audio tracks and videos on the CD to your mobile(copy paste all tracks/videos to mobile memory), so that you can play it instantly when you want to.
3. There are tips also in the first mock test of the book, just in case you don't see them.
I am writing this detailed review only because of how satisfied I was with this book as I was completely clueless before I found this book on amazon. But once I got it, I knew I just had to read and practice from this book and it would be more than enough for the test. And it has a lot of illustrations and is colourful, so is easy and fun to read. And the full book can be covered pretty quickly, if you skip the parts that you think will not benefit you. It can be done in 5-7 full days at a relaxed pace(even lesser if you push it), but as speeds can vary from person to person, please start reading as early as possible, then gauge for yourself and plan accordingly.
