There is notable difference between the two. This soft bed sandal is more comfortable and doesn't require break in as its very comfortable from the first wear onwards. On the other hand the regular footbed needs some time to break in and to feel comfortable. Another thing to keep in mind is that these sandals run a larger size as some other international brands which means if your size is UK9 go for UK8 and that would be a perfect fit. The footbed will get dirty over time but it can be cleaned and thats not much of an issue.

I ordered the narrow 36 and they fit great if not a tad bit long. I wear a 5.5 or 6 in most. The 36 states the size to be a 5-5.5. I think if I went down to a 35 it might be to short for my little toe.

detailedReviews 44: content: I recommend trying on Birks in a store before placing an order. I am a US 7 1/2 and wide, but Birks 37 narrow fit best. From walking around in the shoes, I also determined I would need the "soft" footbed.
The leather is thick, so the strap beneath the buckle cut into the top of my foot. We filed that down to a narrower edge to make the shoe comfortable.
I also purchased a pair of Merrells in a similar style without buckles and they are more comfortable than the Birks. Merrell's cork footbed is softer, has better arch support, and looks a bit more feminine.

There was some weird glue on the buckle and part of the shoe. I almost returned them because of that, but I was able to claw it off after a few minutes.

They do require a bit more care than synthetic slides and thongs but all they need once in a while is a good wash (it's a myth that they can't get wet, just don't wear them in the water. If you get caught in the rain, it's best to take them off). Resealing the cork once or twice a year keeps them looking great.

I have to replace my moderately used 2 year old sandals as they are falling apart.. and I did baby them - avoided water as much as possible, re-coated the cork several times, and had to apply contact cement several times as well to attempt to stop the upper from separating from the lower to no avail, now the upper is separated beyond repair and the sole is falling off as well.

It was impossible to get them comfortable, or broken in. They were worn inside the house for over a month and I never felt they were wearable. The leather uppers/straps never became pliable. They have been a terrible disappointment.

My other pair of Birks didn’t feel uncomfortable and these I wasn’t sure how to return due to Corona Virus shutting everything down. So I gave them to my sister.
