items 5: content: The narrative structure of 'It Ends With Us,' particularly in its movie adaptation, aimed to make Ryle sympathetic before revealing his abusive nature. This deliberate choice, showing events from Lily's perspective, was intended to make the audience fall in love with his character first, complicating the perception of his actions.

They debated the effectiveness of showing events from Lily's perspective versus reality, and how this impacts audience perception of Ryle's character and Lily's choices., I’m probably in the minority but I thought Justin Baldoni portrayed Ryle super well in the movie. He brings an aspect to Ryle that makes it so much more difficult for the audience to immediately cast him as the villain. Before the abusive instances occur, his portrayal of rile is very loyal, attentive, and romantic towards Lily. However, when we first see the scene where he hits Lily while trying to take something out of the oven, it’s heartbreaking because we’ve already fallen in love with his character, and we don’t wanna imagine him being capable of something that bad., The reason why it looks like an accident at first is because we are looking at it from Lily‘s point of view. However, later, on in the movie, we see the scene from the point of reality, which shows that Ryle intentionally smacked Lily.

I hated how one of the most important pieces of the plot was missing: the journals. and they barely mentioned lily and atlas’s childhood. atlas was my favorite character in the book and I loved his interactions with lily because of how easy it was to connect with him, but they completely missed that in the movie as well. the overall movie was jumpy and felt incomplete/rushed. I also hated how they didn’t even mention how she likes to journal except for when they barely flashed her writing as a teen (if u blinked, u would’ve missed it) then she gifted ryle a journal after he told her that he loved her. like from the perspective of someone that didn’t read the book, that scene makes no sense. I wouldn’t even have known what it was had I not read the book before hand. I feel like i could go on and on about everything wrong with the movie, but that would take all day. my overall opinion: this movie was 2 hours and 11 minutes too long.
