snippets: Certainly the new lens is more expensive than the F-mount version, but it’s all relative: after all, it is exceptionally sharp and a very good all-round performer., Even wide-open, it comes close to some of the best and most expensive lenses currently available, so in our opinion, the Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm F1.8 S offers an exceptionally good balance between price and prowess.

snippets: The Nikon f1.8 S is just as good, if not better, optically and a way better deal., I recently picked up a Sony 50mm 1.4 GM and wanted to see how it stacks against the Z 50mm 1.8 S and once again the Z 50mm shows what a stellar lens it is for the price.
type: ARTICLE
items 3: content: Once upon a time, every entry level camera kit came with a 50mm lens of somewhere around f1.7 to f2 speed. With time, these fell out of disfavor as camera buyers either wanted a convenience zoom or a f1.4 or faster lens. Eventually, these moderate speed 50mm lenses found their niche as cheap, small, light but optically good lenses that were easy to throw into a camera bag.
This lens takes that mantle and runs in a new direction with it. Maybe it's not quite as small, light and cheap as something like a Nikkor 50mm f1.8D but it makes up for it by being absolutely stunning optically. The first time I opened a file from my Z7 using this lens, I was blown away. Wow. Just wow. The lens has the kind of sharpness and microcontrast that I generally expect stopped down from a really good lens. That sharpness covers most of the frame, too. The extreme corners aren't quite up to the level of the rest of the image but they're not too far behind. Shooting this lens at f4 or f5.6 produces the kinds of images that I thought were only accessible by using something like a Zeiss Otus. For a $600 lens to be playing in that league is nothing short of remarkable.
Other features of the lens -- resistance to flare, lack of chromatic aberration, etc. are all on an exemplary level, too. The bokeh is not the most neutral/pleasing I've ever seen but it's not bad at all. Certainly not something that will draw attention to itself. The one caveat about that, though, is that the lens does produce some cat's eye bokeh towards the edges of the frame when shot wide open or close to it. Not a deal breaker but something to be aware of.
So, while it's not quite as cheap as the old era of "Nifty Fifties" were, it offers the kind of performance that used to require thousands of dollars of investment to achieve. Very highly recommended.

items 4: content: All the reviews about this lens which you find on YouTube are accurate. I was sceptical about those reviews because of how overtly positive they were, but now I know why. Attaching some sample images from this lens- probably the images might get compressed while being uploaded here so don't judge the sharpness via these pics. They were taken using a Z6 (haven't added any sharpness in post). This lens is very sharp, produces the perfect level of contrast and has no chromatic abberation at all !

The image quality is astounding on my Z7 II, even compared to my 50mm f/1.8 G lens I've had for the past 11 years, which was no slouch. The sharpness is excellent, nearly no chromatic aberration to speak of, minimal distortion, and beautiful soft bokeh. Auto-focus is very solid, locking right on, and works very well with IBIS. The build quality is great: weather sealed, metallic, and very simple. The only downside of this lens to me is that it's a little bigger than I'd like, but in the end it is very nearly the same size as the G lens with the FTZ adapter, so it's not unreasonable. My first one was a Nikkor 50 f/1.4 AIS that I bought in 1964. In the intervening years I have bought a lot of other lenses but it was that faithful 50/1.4 AIS that recorded what are now my life’s most heartwarming memories.I sold all my old photography gear when I converted to mirrorless in March of 2021. Starting over with all new gear, I bought a Nikon Z 7II and a Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S. The 50/1.2 is a spectacularly fine lens and I am very glad I have one. However, with my hands now a bit less steady than they used to be (I am 81 yo), I find that the 50/1.2 is best used on a tripod. That constraint (speaking just for me) is not so handy for catching my kitty in her moments of mischief or for leisurely ambling around town and countryside to photograph what catches my interest. Hence, for Christmas of 2024, with a 50mm already in hand, I decided to treat myself to a lighter and smaller Z 85mm f/1.8 S. That lens became a fave so fast that just two months later it was easy to talk myself into buying its sibling 50/1.8.. And am I ever glad I did!I own six other Z lenses; 26/2.8, 40/2, 50/1.2, 85/1.8, 105/2.8, and 24-120/4. Each fills a purpose to shoot portraits, florals, landscapes, and some street. Nonetheless, I expect my new 50/1.8, as was my old AIS 50/1.4, will be the one I use most. I like the look of 50mm photos because they render most closely how we perceive the world. And that makes their images all the more real.Based on my own complete satisfaction with the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S, I vouch for it to fulfill your expectations for a high quality prime lens.Photos: All Nikon Zf + Nikkor Z 50mm/1.8 S. 1) Sentinel Duty - Ginger loves to keep watch over her yard @ f/4; 2) Harbingers of Spring @ f/4; 3) Winter ends with beautiful Crocus blossoms @ f/4; 4) Zoomie Intermission - Ginger pauses during her morning zoomie @ f/2.5. items 9: content: Relatively inexpensive, lightweight, sharp, and all-around great lens. At f/1.8, it handles low light situations and provides a perfect complement to my 24-70 and 14-30, f/4 zooms. I switched to the z7 system for a lightweight alternative to my F system. These 3 lenses all perform way above their weight. The 50mm f/1.8 is over 1.25 lbs lighter than the new f/1.2 and 1/4 the price. Performance wise, it's a super alternative.
