It's just too traumatizing, isn't it?, It’s a beautiful book, but very heart wrenching. I cried when the book ended, and yes I took a break after this. But this book also makes you realise a lot of things.

items 3: content: This book has stuck with me since I was a freshman in high school. I read this book about 3 to 4 times a year. My original book was so loved that I passed it on to someone else as a book exchanged and ordered this one as my replacement! The immense sorrow and heartbreak that is in this book still has me sobbing everytime I read it. But the love and freedom that comes along into the story gives the reader hope for a better life. This book holds near and dear to my heart. It will forever be a part of me. Khaled Hosseini's writing captivates the reader in a way that makes you feel as though you are living with these characters and feel everything they are feeling. This is a must read for me. I am working on buying multiple copies of this book!

The way he portraits the changes from in Afghanistan through people’s lives is amazing. He took us in to Mariam’s life from since she was child till the end. I was felt so connected to her character. I felt upset about how unfortunate her life was. I was very much emotionally attached to the book. I throughly enjoyed it and would recommend this! It is an easy read too! It embarks the journey of two woman whose paths cross. The storyline goes back forth between Mariam (who's unwanted discarded, then is forced to marry a much older man) and Laila (who is much younger than Mariam-fate would have them marry the same man).It really puts in perspective what woman in Afghanistan deal with but you also have this sense of understanding that we [woman] are still treated this way. In regards to the sacrifices woman take, what we deal with by men, even our own family members and so much more. It's a powerful read. I highly recommend it!One of my favorite quotes from the book:"As a reminder of how woman like us suffer.. How quietly we endure all that falls upon us."

The author calls the invasion of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan the beginning of the end of a peaceful life. Later one trouble changes to another. The Taliban turned out to be an even more brutal enemy for the Afghans than the Soviet Union. Disorders, sexual violence, orphans, beggars - this is what the author painted in Afghanistan. According to American critics, one of the reasons for the novel's dizzying success was that in 2003, when the book was published, there was a great deal of interest in American society in Afghanistan. In the work, the author deals with religious, philosophical and literary issues. Introduces us to the lifestyle, traditions and customs of Afghans. Less

Mariam lives in a kolba on the outskirts of Herat with her mother. Jalil, her father, is a wealthy man who lives in town with three wives and several children. Because Mariam is his illegitimate daughter, she cannot live with them, but Jalil visits her every Thursday. On her fifteenth birthday, Mariam wants her father to take her to see Pinocchio at his movie theater. When he does not show up, she hikes into town and goes to his house. He refuses to see her, and she ends up sleeping on the porch. In the morning, Mariam returns home to find that her mother has hanged herself out of fear that her daughter has deserted her. Mariam is then taken to live in her father's house. Jalil arranges for her to be married to Rasheed, a shoemaker from Kabul who is thirty years her senior. In Kabul, Mariam becomes pregnant seven successive times, but is never able to carry a child to term, and Rasheed gradually becomes more abusive. In the same neighborhood live a girl named Laila and a boy named Tariq, who are close friends, but careful of social boundaries. War comes to Afghanistan, and Kabul is bombarded by rocket attacks. Tariq's family decides to leave the city, and the emotional farewell between Laila and Tariq ends with them making love. Laila's family also decides to leave Kabul, but as they are packing a rocket destroys the house, kills her parents, and severely injures Laila. Laila is taken in by Rasheed and Mariam. After recovering from her injuries, Laila discovers that she is pregnant with Tariq's child. After being told that Tariq is dead, she agrees to marry Rasheed, who is eager to have a young and attractive second wife, and hopes to have a child with her. When Laila gives birth to a daughter, Aziza, Rasheed is displeased and suspicious, and he soon becomes abusive toward Laila. Mariam and Laila eventually become confidantes and best friends. They plan to run away from Rasheed and leave Kabul, but they are caught at the bus station. Rasheed beats them and deprives them of water for several days, almost killing Aziza. A few years later, Laila gives birth to Zalmai, Rasheed's son. The Taliban has risen to power, and there is a drought, and living conditions in Kabul become poor. Rasheed's workshop burns down, and he is forced to take jobs he is ill-suited for. Rasheed sends Aziza to an orphanage. Then one day, Tariq appears outside the house. He and Laila are reunited, and their passions flare anew. When Rasheed returns home from work, Zalmai tells his father about the visitor. Rasheed starts to savagely beat Laila and Mariam kills Rasheed with a shovel. Afterwards, Mariam confesses to killing Rasheed, in order to draw attention away from Laila and Tariq, and is executed, while Laila and Tariq leave for Pakistan with Aziza and Zalmai. After the fall of the Taliban, Laila and Tariq return to Afghanistan. They stop in the village where Mariam was raised, and discover a package that Mariam's father left behind for her: a videotape of Pinocchio, a small pile of money and a letter. Laila reads the letter and discovers that Jalil regretted sending Mariam away. Laila and Tariq return to Kabul and fix up the orphanage, where Laila starts working as a teacher. Laila is pregnant with her third child, and if it is a girl, it is suggested she Less

items 17: content: so it's a toss up--"the kite runner" is one of my all-time favorite books, but this runs neck & neck with it. they're quite different, so it's comparing apples & oranges, but the depth & eloquence with which hosseini writes is ever-present in this story as well. when i read something i fall in love with, i tend to seek out all that the author has written in order to consume everything of theirs, to binge. sometimes it can be a letdown… the standard having been set so high with my first love. but other times i've found an equal, not necessarily greater love, in something else--because even though it's different, the magic gift that the author has in the means of communication still connects & transports me to another dimension. this is true of this story. please read it!
