The black is considered to be tougher to abrasions, but the white is a bit lighter and most importantly, a white pack is far easier to been seen with during hunting season. Although I haven’t called their customer service line to ask for an exchange, their return policies online appear to indicate that such a return and exchange would not be allowed. In any case, if you need to additional size, value visibility in a pocket over anti-snagging, and value toughness over visibility, this pack is for you. I have used Ospreys, REI Co-op packs, etc., and this pack was just a much smoother and well-balanced experience. Simply put, it’s an incredibly well-designed pack and I highly recommend it. As Ron Swanson said, "I won’t publicly endorse a product unless I use it exclusively and I really believe in it.” With that in mind, I absolutely endorse this product. Less

detailedReviews 2: content: I had reservations about this pack, surely it wouldn't carry as well as the more traditional packs that I have used? Those shoulder straps look thin, surely they can't be very comfortable? Would I even like a pack that doesn't have very many pockets to stow a million things?
I was very well pleased when I got this pack, transferred my gear over, did several test hikes, and all of my reservations turned out to be false.
I really appreciate the simplicity of this pack, and somehow it is amazingly comfortable even with a 34lb loadout. The mesh pockets stretch and do hold a surprising amount of things. I would like for the mesh main pocket to be a bit taller, but it is sufficient and works well.
I am very glad that I gave this pack a try, it really is excellent and worth even bit of hype, and every penny that it costs

I'm sure pics from that period show me as a scrawny little kid dwarfed by a massive pack with a big smile on his faceI loved hiking back then, more than anything, but how much more would I have loved it if I had started with a pack that was under two pounds? It still makes me shake my head and laugh realizing how many miles I did using that original rig. This new Windrider is a just about as perfect pack for me as I can imagine. The simplicity, the craftsmanship, quality materials and lastly, the feather weight, are worth every penny. It fits like a dream when loaded. Today my pack for that same fifty mile trek hovers around 15-18lbs. The advances in equipment sure has made it easier on my body, and this old body needs all the help it can get. LOL.Since I've gotten back into backpacking I have poured over internet articles, equipment reviews, youtube videos etc and eventually came to the conclusion that a HMG pack was the way to go. I do not regret that decision one bit. I followed up the Windrider pack purchase by getting a couple of large pods and a pillow stuff sack. The modular aspect everything working together and organizing the pack for a comfortable ride is sublime. It's a great piece of equipment made with love and lots of pride right here in the USA. I have intentionally minimized my purchases from the large retail stores and focused on cottage industry shops to complete my new lightweight gear setup. It just feels right knowing I am getting some of the best equipment made with the highest craftsmanship by people who love being in the outdoors as much as I do.Supporting HMG and other cottage industries is helping our economy get back to it's cottage industry roots and that's a good thing.Keep up the great work HMG! I'll be back for more. Less

On a side note it won't fit you like that enormous osprey pack you're carrying and that may seem weird at first but use the sizing guide provided and you won't regret the 6lb pack weight savings. I know I didn't! I also highly recommend the pods that hmg sells. They offer perfect use of the space, waterproof redundancy and help with organization. They are worth every penny and so is this pack. I look forward to many more years and miles with my hmg gear. Thanks guys! Less

The good news- I'll never have it loaded with more than 25. Though the hipbelt is thin compared to many others, and I'm a skinny guy, it functions better than any I've seen (including Gregory) in successfully and comfortably transferring weight to your illiac crest, hugging it perfectly. HMG have perfected this concept, making their packs carry more comfortably than the majority of the 'competition'. While some raise concern about not having load lifters, if the pack is properly designed, carrying the weight close to your body, you don't need them!Ask me about how much I love my HMG Windrider- I'd love to tell you alllllllll about it! The hip belt included is plenty comfortable, yet not too bulky. The pockets on the hip belt are genius - placed just right, and were an unexpected boon. The outer pockets on the bag are well placed, too (I could easily reach things stored in the side pockets without taking the pack off), and feel tough. I didn't have any trouble with snags from the environment, but did find that putting some things into them (a platypus soft bottle with its squared edges, for example) could be a little tricky. When I had decided to go with a HyperLite pack but was still determining which size would be best, I opted for the 3400 figuring that I could just roll the top down further on shorter trips that required less gear. This turned out to be a good thought. The hydration port is below the top of the shoulder straps, so you can roll the top of the bag down as much as you like and not interfere with your hydration tube. This gives me a nice range of flexibility: roll it tight for a short trip like this last one, or take a little more room for longer treks. The one caveat to this review is that we had spectacular weather for the entire trip. This was great for me, but it means that I can't yet attest to the waterproof claims. My summary: this is a brilliant, comfortable, lightweight pack, and I'm patting myself on the back for deciding to buy it. detailedReviews 14: content: This is my first new backpack since I bought my Marmot CrossTerra many years ago. Wow, what a difference a few decades make. There is no comparison in weight. The Marmot weighs 8 pounds. My black 3400 Windrider weighs 2 pounds (if you get white it's 1.75 pounds) and it's fully waterproof. I have already packed it 20 miles and love the difference. If you size it correctly, it fits like a glove. I recommend the exterior pockets, which easily hold 3 liters of water and other loose gear securely. My base weight with the Windrider is under 10 pounds. Sure, it is a little pricey, but it will last for years and cuben fiber is easy to patch. Must buy if you love backpacking.

detailedReviews 15: content: I bought my HMG Windrider in the Spring of 2015 after trying out many other UL packs. Including Osprey Exos, ULA, Gossamer Gear, Six Moon Designs, Z Zpacks, and Granite Gear. The "Windrider" is by far the most comfortable pack I've owned. I compared it to all the packs above with 20-25 lbs and immediately loved the fit and it's simple but highly functional features. My pack has been down the John Muir Trail, and is currently over 400 miles into the PCT for 2016. My blog (http://chancingit.com) Other hikers have commented on how small my pack looks, but yet I still carry everything I need with a low base weight. Maxed out I can carry around 35 lbs. For long water carries, but it feels like you're wearing nothing in the 20-25 lb. range.

detailedReviews 19: content: I bought this pack for my 2019 thru, but in the meantime have used it extensively and exclusively for all of my outdoor activities. I used to use 4 different packs; one for day hikes, one for backpacking, one for bike packing, one for cross country skiing/ snowshoeing. My other packs currently gather dust. This pack is ultralight, durable, versatile and stylish. It also cooly hugs my back, which is extremely reassuring on sketchy climbs and descents.

What tipped the scales for me were the overwhelming amount of positive reviews for this company and their packs. I am proud to support an American company thats makes excellent equipment and excellent customer service as well. I look forward to continuing my support for HMG and i thank them for their contribution to helping people enjoy the outdoors. HMG rocks!

detailedReviews 21: content: My new 3400 Windrider is a big improvement, perhaps the biggest in the more than 70 years I have been hiking /camping/ climbing - the reduction in weight compared to many other packs I have owned got me started in reducing the weight of every piece og gear I use regularly - clothing, ice axe, boots, ropes... at age 77 it is now critical for me to go hyperlite to just keep going and going and going. Great gear from HMG. Highly recommend, with no reservations.

detailedReviews 22: content: I carried one of these on my recent hike of the 2,800 mile continental divide trail. The pack held up extremely well, carried great, and swallowed tons of food and water when necessary. My longest stretch without resupply was ~165 miles through the Wind River Range and I was surprised how comfortably the pack carried 6 days of food.As mentioned by a previous reviewer, it also cinches down to an impressively small size when carrying smaller loads. For these reasons I think this was the perfect pack for such the trail. Furthermore, the customer service offered by HMG is top notch. You can rest assured that if anything goes wrong with your pack they will go far out of their way to help you.I highly recommend this pack and company.

The quality and attention to detail is insane. And I'd like to point out that the mesh isn't your typical mesh, it's almost like a fishing net material so it's not gonna get snagged and rip very easily like some other similar style packs. The hip belt pockets on the bag are quite small and inflexible, but not an unreasonable barrier to get across. 2. The series of compression straps on the outside of the bag work well to keep in inside contents of the pack tight, however they'll quickly make whatever items you've stored in the mesh pockets harder to access. I'm thinking of cutting small holes in the mesh so I can feed the compression straps through and only have them effect whats on the inside of the pack, without pinching things like my water bottle on the outside. This way I'll have the option of strapping things on the outside, the inside or both. All in all, I'm quite happy and looking forward to using it on future trips. Less

detailedReviews 58: content: This is my first ultralight pack. 1st time I used it I did a difficult 18 mile in one day hike, including some very steep climbs. The pack was 22 lbs as I had to carry all my water for 3 days plus overnight gear. It was very stable, did not slip. The pack was comfortable and had no issues other than you can’t reach behind to get your water bottles. I took a couple of holders off an old pack and put them on the belt. A suggestion would be some lightweight holders that would clip onto the belt so the water bottles won’t slide. I did find with a 36” waist the medium would be a little too snug if I was layered up and wearing a puffy, so I bought the Hyperlite waist extension.I would recommend this pack.

detailedReviews 59: content: Really happy with this bag. . It's exactly enough and has all the specifics that really matter. My wife and I bought a pair of these bags for a 19 day trip on the John Muir Trail in July where we put these bags to the test. The aluminum stays really helped with dealing with bear canisters. The mesh pockets were invaluable for sitting pads, cold soak lunches, water bottles (we could both reach smartwater 1 liter bottles in the side pockets without issue) and the like. Heavest pack weight was around 29 lbs with water - still very comfy. Worth the price tag for the materials, design, and overall peace of mind - I'm hoping to use this bag for any longer duration camping trip for the foreseeable future.

Carried the 24 lb load very comfortably. Spent the last day of the trip going down the rock scramble at Old Rag. I am vertically challenged and had to slide down many of the rocks. There were also very narrow sections that required squeezing through the rocks. The material of the pack was not damaged at all!! The only thing that I noticed after the trip is one of the metal grommets is missing from the bottom of the pack body. The next test will be a 5 day in Yosemite and I am confident this pack will perform well.

I can scrunch this down into a day pack or use it for a full through hike. So durable. Will last me thousands of miles. Also the pods are a true game changer. The 55L volume size is perfect when you have to carry a bear canister & it definitely rolls down to the size of the 2400 when you have to carry less. I went with the Windrider cause it has the spacer mesh which for me will be key to dry things out on the outside of my pack. Everyone talks highly about the Dyneema fabric the pack is made of & I 100% agree. Finally, with the larger pockets on the pack this makes for the best all around for either a section or thru-hike. detailedReviews 68: content: All in all prob my favorite pack I've owned, particularly while using the pack pods. The outer pockets are well sized and designed which make the top loading design with a dearth of storage pockets more workable for day to day grinding. Quite comfy even with 40 pounds or so. My criticisms so far would be that the Cuban fiber is not puncture resistant to branches etc, the pack squeaks when loaded down heavy, especially when pack is unrolled and stuffed to extend overhead. Not sure what causes this noise but prob the fabric vs thread. Final con is that the mesh is delicate. Mine tore on day 1. All that said I really do love the pack. Perhaps a southwest would've been a better choice for my current use environment.

I love the way the pack opens up and compresses to include a wide array of packed volumes, I have comfortable carried everywhere from 30L to 60L of packed items and everything stays snug to my body while hiking. The straps are all sturdy, simple, and effective. Lastly, the hip pockets are very easily accessible and include plenty of volume for maps, cell phones, wallets, you name it. I love this pack!

I was a little skeptical about the minimalism (I love pockets, zippers, etc.) but my eyes have been opened and I have come to realize that good organizational skills can easily compensate for the minimalist feature set. We got a lot of gnarly weather, including hail and heavy rain but the pack held up amazingly, keeping my gear very dry without additional waterproofing on the inside of the pack. We needed to carry bear canisters, which did prove a little challenging given the size of the pack, but the top compression strap did a great job of keeping the canister in place. That said, I did break one of the buckles on the last day trying to secure the bear can - I think this is due to my user error more than any design flaw in the backpack. The pack is exceptionally lightweight, well-constructed, comfortable and simple. Can't recommend it highly enough.

It rained throughout half of the trip and it was so nice having everything nice and dry inside the pack while my buddies dealt this those gimmicky rain covers on their traditional 70+ liter pack. I could even reach candy bars and snacks out of the mesh front pouch with the pack on. Easy to take out smart water bottles in the water bottle holders and they stay in even when crawling over, around and under downed trees. Nice and light and I'm glad I got the 3400 instead of the 2400. I think the extra 4oz. is well worth the 15 extra liters you get.

detailedReviews 86: content: I absolutely LOVE my 3400 Windrider! It fits my smaller frame and is very comfortable. My only critique would be that the hip belt pockets are on the smaller side. I wish they were large enough to fit my cellphone. Besides that, it's the perfect pack for long section hikes and travel. I love HMG!

I live in CO and we don't get much rain that we don't otherwise plan around - how waterproof is the material? Will I need a separate pack cover for wetter environments like the NW? Or do you recommend just using waterproof stuff sacks as double protection. Anyway, thanks for the pack, it's fun to drop pounds with a single purchase. :) Cheers - Alisa

detailedReviews 100: content: Hey, I love the pack, great support and super comfortable so far. The mesh compartment is sturdy and supports my equipment well. I would suggest improving the design of the hip belt pockets. I switched from my ULA pack which had THE BEST hip belt pockets imaginable. One thing i miss is having roomy and easily accessible hip belt pockets. The HMG hip belt pockets are small and the design creates an inflexible pocket that is hard to put in/take out frequently used items like a compass, water treatment, knife, etc.

It’s not waterproof and your stuff will get wet without a liner or pods. 2. I like load lifters and wish this pack had them. For me it’s adjusting the load after hours upon end. I do love this pack and it survived the AT with hardly a nick. Highly recommend!

detailedReviews 102: content: i've got relatively few miles on the pack so far. packs up nicely, and is light and comfortable. definitely was right for me to go 3400 vs 2400, especially when need to carry a meaningful amount of water. why not 5 stars rather than 4? have had a very hard time cleaning orange splatter (bird? plant? not sure) off the white. not a huge deal, but still. also, harder than would like to reach water bottle in side pockets. overall, though, very happy.

I thought side pockets on the belt would be too small but they were actually really good, and great for one handed operation. The only downside is that this bag is not in the least water-resistant, which i thought it would be. I was rained for three days and at the end of each day, had my kit not been in waterproof bags, it would have been soaked.

I can keep a few small things in them and can only really access the pockets if I'm not wearing the pack. The pockets are pretty useless.Even though my torso length is a large my waist is pretty small, to the point where I can tighten the belt all the way and still can't transfer the weight to my hips.Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much I can do as this pack is not very customizable. It would be nice if they had an option to pick your hip belt size when you pick your torso size, but I didn't see any when I ordered my pack. And lastly, it is still early in the year but I can already tell that when it gets warm, I am going to turn the back panel into one giant sweat stain, and I didn't shell out the extra money just to make the pack blackAll in all this is pack that could potentially be perfect if it weren't for some glaring flaws in the design Less

For these reasons I wound up switching to a ULA Circuit about halfway through the trail, since it has load lifters and adjustable torso length, and also huge hipbelt pockets. If you only plan on using it for short trips with light loads then a Hyperlite pack is great, but I won't be using it on my next thru hike. Less

detailedReviews 113: content: I really, really, wanted to like this pack. Especially after I unpacked it and saw how well it's designed and built. After testing the pack by loading it up and going for a walk in my neighborhood, I realized the hipbelt would never stay put where it's most comfortable for me.Also, the shoulder straps (which are straight, not curved) are placed too wide for my build. By the time I'd pulled the sternum strap tight enough to stop the shoulder straps from rubbing the inside of my arms, the straps were twisted. My best guess is that the design is simply not friendly to short, zaftig, female hikers. I sent it back to make room in my budget for a pack that would work with my body.

detailedReviews 114: content: A great, waterproof pack. I got the Medium size. The only issue are the front pockets: had to attach two waist/chest pockets by Velcro, as there are not enough of front pockets. also, the existing belt pockets are too far in the back and I had to constantly fight with them being out of my view during the 10-day Tahoe Rim Trail through hike. Also, I think if the zipper opens the other way, that might have helped? Otherwise, a truly GREAT product!
