detailedReviews: detailedReviews 1: content: I've been using home hair dye for years so know what I'm doing. This new formula is an absolute disgrace and I can't believe it got through QC! I was doing a root touch-up so had it on for 20 mins then put the rest on for the remaining 10 mins. When I came to put the remainder on it had all separated in the bottle which was a worry, so needed remixing in my hand. When it came to rinsing off it was like swamp water, green. At this point I was panicking. I carried on rinsing and applied the mask and loads of my hair was falling out/snapped off, not sure which but there was clumps of it. I dried it was horrified, my grey roots were a khaki GREEN! This is when I came on and looked at the reviews on here and wished I'd read them prior to purchase. Honestly, if you're reading this and have greys DO NOT BUY THIS. Trust me, this isn't anything I did wrong, there is something seriously wrong with this new formula. I went back to Boots today and showed them my hair and told them to look at the reviews, the lady was lovely, went in the back to see the manager and when she came out she immediately refunded me. I then re-purchased an oil-based colour from a different manufacturer, redid my hair tonight and it's perfect . I will be taking this up with L'Or al due to the hair loss I experienced and the upset of having to go to work today with roots the colour of a newborns nappy.

detailedReviews 2: content: I have been using this dye for years. Purchased recently and noticed that the packaging had changed but said on the box same shade. It definitely is not! I thought that the wrong colour had been put in the box when the dye came out green on my scalp and forehead. Not just a slight greenish colour but a disgusting shade of green! Talk about panic! I now have roots with a noticeable green tinge and will have to re-dye. What a disaster. What is L’Oreal thinking about selling this stuff. No idea how this got by quality control.

title: New formula turned roots green, disastrous results
detailedReviews 3: content: After years and years and years of using this dye, I have no idea what has happened but a green head whilst dye is developing, thick and cloggy in the bottle even after vigorous shaking, thick and difficult to apply and spread around well, and after all that effort, the colour is nowhere near the same as the previous formula (which went dark brown when applied). My roots are still so light to the point they look grey and I feel like I have wasted my time and need to dye again as there is just no depth of colour (which is a grey/green/slight yellow) Just awful. And to add insult to injury, my hair is so dry and brittle after this it's just awful. Do not waste your money. And please don't post a response underneath saying "discuss with customer service" as I already have sent them an email too. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!

detailedReviews 4: content: I have coloured my hair for well over fifteen years, always use same colour number of Excellence natural dark brown . My stock was running low so ordered six packs online from Boots. Was going on holiday so dyed my hair. Formula was in a new style box but stated same formula. So thick it was hard to squeeze it out of the applicator bottle and when applied was a shade of yellowy green. Thought Boots had muddled up the shades as boxes open easily and had fallen into outer delivery box. My hair had such a distinctive green shade I used a different box but every box has the same result. Is this some sort of joke, cost me a huge amount of money, a huge waste of money not to mention my time and effort! Will not be able to use the remaining boxes and will need to change brands. Why change a perfect product into such a disgusting awful product ? I have for so many years relied on 'Excellence'.... has it been sabotaged? Feel distraught!

detailedReviews 5: content: I’ve used excellence creme for many years and have been very happy with it. I recently bought two new packets that said ‘new packaging’ however they should have said ‘new formula’. This new formula is incredibly thick and so gluggy it can’t be squeezed through the applicator. It’s not the usual light coloured creme and is a disturbing greenish brown colour like baby poo. My hair feels dry now with next to no grey coverage. So disappointed I threw the second box out. I will never use this again.

title: New formula is thick, green-brown, poor coverage
detailedReviews 6: content: The formula and name have changed. Previously called dark brown it's now called "Brown" and states it's the same colour and result but with a new formula. I've used this product for many years, this new version is very different. So disappointing and so bizarre they changed the name with no explanation and can claim it's the same result.
It didn't take fully on my hair, my grey roots were lighter and the colour is dull with a green / pond water brown tinge. Lacking the shine I used to get after using 4 "dark brown". Currently trying new brands to find a perfect replacement.
I can only imagine this product is now cheaper to produce or the previous had some bad ingredients that needed removing. Very disappointing.

detailedReviews 7: content: Interesting to read some other reviews here about a green tinge to coloured hair. My hairdresser mentioned there was a green tinge to my hair this morning which she'd never noticed before. She suggested trying a warmer colour as my hair was picking up something in the dye. I was checking for a warmer tone today and noticed similar comments on here. I have used no.6 light brown for years and have never had this before. Guessing it's something to do with new formula! Think I'll try other brands as don't want green hair thanks!

I wished I had look at the reviews before dying my hair today, otherwise I wouldn't have wasted my money again!! title: New formula causes green roots, not permanent
detailedReviews 9: content: I was hesitant to purchase this product, but I was desperate to neutralise the red-orange tones left in my hair from an old semi-permanent dye. Despite reading mixed reviews and knowing it contains ammonia (which I usually avoid), I decided to take the risk and brace myself for the worst.
This was the only shade I could find with an ash tone and a blue base — most products tend to lean warm, and the few ash options available are typically too dark for my hair. For reference, my hair reaches almost to my hips, so I needed three boxes for full coverage.
The ash tone was decent but very subtle. It didn’t fully neutralise the leftover warm tones, even though they had already faded significantly. However, what truly ruined the experience for me was the smell. It was incredibly strong and overpowering — to the point where my eyes were watering during application. Despite having all the windows open, I had to move to the backyard just to finish the process. Even my partner, who was helping me with a mirror, struggled with the intensity. I honestly dread to think what that level of harshness is doing to my hair and scalp.
I didn’t use the included shampoo, but I did try the mask. One frustrating detail: the mask is blue-based, not purple — something that really should be clearly stated on the packaging. It’s misleading as it’s marketed more like a typical purple-toning product, when in fact it functions more like a blue conditioner and should be labelled as such for ash tones.
All in all, I won’t be repurchasing this. If you’re not sensitive to strong chemical smells, it might work for you — but for me, the unpleasant experience has put me off DIY colouring entirely.
Update: It’s been just over a couple of weeks since I wrote this review, and unfortunately, the colour has faded significantly, leaving behind an unwanted orange tone - the very issue I was hoping to fix. The purple/blue mask made no noticeable difference, and I’ve since had to purchase an alternative product in an attempt to correct it, though even that has had limited success. I’ll now be looking for a different colour altogether to try and cover this disappointing result.
Overall, I’m highly disappointed.

title: Strong smell, color faded to orange
detailedReviews 10: content: I’ve been using L’Oréal Excellence Dark Brown for years and have always been happy with the results—until my most recent experience in October/November. When I opened the box, the formula seemed off; it was runny, and when I applied it to my roots, it turned a dirty, murky brown-green within minutes. I thought it might darken as it developed, but after leaving it on for the usual time, my greys were tinted green, and my natural dark hair had a sickly undertone.
At first, I blamed myself—was it product buildup, porous hair, or even minerals in my water? I let it fade naturally, avoiding harsh products to fix it. However, today I checked the reviews before trying a different shade and was shocked to see how many people experienced the same issue. It’s clear this is a problem with the new formula, not user error.
The formula issues people describe—runny consistency, green tones, uneven coverage, and difficulty adhering to greys—are exactly what I experienced. This product was once reliable, but the quality has dropped dramatically.
L’Oréal, what has happened to this product? Why haven’t these issues been addressed? Loyal customers like me deserve better than an untested formula that leaves their hair green and patchy. Please investigate this and listen to the feedback.

title: New formula too thick, green/yellow tinge
detailedReviews 12: content: 30 years I have used this product with no complaints, this new formula should have been taken off the market when the first complaints started. I suspected something wasn't right when I opened the first packet, so I opened another packet (2 different batchs) - it didn't look any better than the first packet, but I proceeded with my root touch up. The formula was a cacky brown/green colour and just about set like concrete in the bottle. Very hard to get out of the bottle, so applying it was also extremely difficult! After 40 mins it was still showing the greys, and had not taken on my brown hair also - so I waited a further 20 mins - and NO better! It is obvious this product was NOT TESTED before entering the market! It is also obvious that the company is LACKING CUSTOMER CARE, it should have been tested when the BAD reviews started. If they had tested it when these bad reviews started, surely L'oreal would have done a PRODUCT RECALL - because they haven't, I can only assume they haven't any customer RESPONSIBILITY!!! How many people have been inconvenienced I wonder?

detailedReviews 13: content: Have used L’Oréal Excellence 7.3 for many years - without an issue. Purchased latest box and was shaking the mixture together and thought it felt thick. Started applying to hair roots and could barely squeeze the solution out of the bottle. Banged it on the bathroom bench as it was not moving at all. Managed to get some out and noticed it was green in colour. Great - have an expired bottle or something. Jumped in shower to remove what I had applied. Straight down shop to get another box. New box was still thickish to apply and not as bad a green colour. (As I had dropped a few specks on my towel from the first effort the spots were drying up a brown colour) - so that was the only reason I continued with the hair colour. First box got binned, so waste of money there. Could you please explain what is going on with the thickness in the bottle and the greenish colour it has now become. Obviously, no testing done on the NEW formula at all.

detailedReviews 14: content: L’Oreal have changed the formula of this colourant. They have seemingly stopped the colour I used to use, ie natural dark brown, number 4, and are now calling it ‘brown’ but it’s too light for me and looks orangey. This darkest brown is much too dark, almost black, and although I follow the instructions to the letter, every time I wash my hair the water runs a blue-grey colour. The colour also doesn’t last as long either. It also has a more unpleasant smell. I have used it several times with the same results. I’m really disappointed and will be changing brands when I can find something else suitable. I don’t know why they messed around with this because it was very good as it was.

detailedReviews 15: content: So my usual Natural dark brown was discontinued and I couldn't find it anywhere. After several months, went into superdrug and saw that this one (4 Brown) was put on the shelves as a replacement for the old packaging. I was excited and bought two as part of a deal. I cannot begin to say how disappointed I am with this colour. Firstly, the colorant was very thick and wouldn't mix properly. When it finally mixed it created a yellow mustard creme rather than a brown one. Half way through application I began to wonder if I made a mistake. Needless to say I have yellow green coverage rather than brown. This is a horrible formula! Please do not waste your money and save your hair.

One thing to take into consideration is if you do have resilient greys for heavens sake leave it on the few extra minutes! Next time I will. My hair was in better condition than before I started. detailedReviews 18: content: I've used this hair dye in the same colour for many years and loved it. Always had the same great result so no anxiety. The new formula is horrible. It's so thick it doesn't come out of the bottle properly, much harder to get even coverage, and covers a lot less. It was barely enough for a root touch-up. Also, they changed the colour. It's now a lighter, warmer brown which looks awful with my skin tone. It has no shine and colour is weird on my greys. My hair looks like I'm wearing a bad wig. I hope the other reviews are right and it will fade quickly. First time in my life I don't want this permanent dye to hold up.

detailedReviews 19: content: This has always been my brand, and the first time I applied the new formula, it looked green 20 minutes in and I panicked, thinking I got a botched box. Rinsed it out and found my hair was still intact and greys were only slightly tinted. I tried again in 5 weeks with the same shade and another new box with the new formula. This time, I left the colour in for a good 1 hour (I usually give it 1.5 hours with the old formulas FYI) but still wasn’t to confident about this new formula. The greys did not really take to the colour as well as the old formula. This last time I gave it a full 1.5 hours and still the same. Could still see where the greys are which were only slightly tinted. The old formula covered the greys COMPLETELY. I hope L’Oréal goes back to the last formula before this. This just doesn’t cut it. detailedReviews 21: content: I have used L'Oréal Excellence 5.11 Ultra Ash Light Brown for a few years now. It still made my hair a little orangey/brassy but better than some others. Now they have new packaging and the 5.11 box shows pictures of really dark brown/black hair, but the packet says "same shade". So I went against my first instincts and trusted L'Oréal. Please don't do it!!
The consistency of the colour mix was thick and lumpy regardless of how much I mixed the products. It was virtually impossible to rinse all the colour out of my hair (it was still coming out the next day). The final result was very dark, as in the picture, not light brown as described on the box. Also my hair is breaking now and the colour stained my skin. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. Never trusting L'Oréal again!!

So, I decided to give this product a try (based on comments, reviews, and price). I was terrified, because I have never colored my hair myself. I couldn't be more pleased. The product was easy, easy, easy to use, only requires 30 mins wait time, comes with a conditioner that leaves my hair sooo soft and natural feeling, covers all gray, lasts 7-8 weeks, and I love the color. I ended up using 2 colors to achieve the exact color I wanted (Golden Brown and Medium Auberne). I highly recommend this product for ease of use, soft natural looking hair, longevity, and price. detailedReviews 24: content: I've used Excellence Creme shade 6.3 for about 4 years and have always been really pleased with the results both in terms of grey coverage and final colour.
I bought 2 packs from Superdrug the other day. I noticed that the packaging had changed and the shade is now described as "natural light golden blonde" rather than the previous "natural light golden brown". It's nowhere near blonde.
Anyway. Yesterday I went to use it. After mixing the colour and developer the smell and texture weren't the same as usual. I applied some to my hair but something didn't feel right so I rinsed it off after a few minutes. After I rinsed it off I noticed the mixture had a grey tint. 30 minutes later it had developed into a dark grey!
I've emailed L'Oreal about this and await their reply.

detailedReviews 30: content: Lockdown pushed me into using DIY hair colouring to cover the grey, and I was then a convert, using this ever since. The salon, at 5x the cost, didn't give me any better colour! But now they've changed the formulation. There's a new box (not the one shown here - this is the original product) which says 'new box same product' ... but it's not. It seemed different from the start mixing it (which made me look at the ingredients) and then it didn't colour my greys the nice brown I'm used to, instead I got a light ginger/golden brown, so the grey hair line was still very obvious. I managed to find one of the original boxes in a store so plan to use that (after 2 weeks not my usual 4) and then I plan to switch to another brand (I'm told the one Davina M promotes is good!). Why do companies mess with brands and then break them? Shame as the original colour was perfect.

detailedReviews 31: content: I began using this product in 2019, and I absolutely loved it. Good on the hair, and great color that was deep and did not fade even after months. But then at some point in 2023, it was completely different: the color barely touched my hair, and what did touch it was nowhere near the level of color it was before and it faded very quickly. I continued to use it through the end of 2024, hoping it was something I was doing that could be changed, but it has had the same outcome every time.It is just not good anymore, and that really disappoints me because I really liked it, my hair really did well with it, and now I’m going to have to try a new and different product, which scares me gotta say.

detailedReviews 32: content: I've used Excellence Creme shade 3 for many years. The latest apparently reformulated version is dreadful. It's really difficult to apply, both to get out of the bottle and to work through the hair as it's way too thick in terms of consistency. Coverage appears patchy and inconsistent for the first time ever. I'm reluctant to switch brands but shall be doing so unless the previous formulation is brought back. And nothing on the pack to indicate the formulation is any different.

detailedReviews 33: content: I've been using this product for many many years. I loved the colour of 5.5 but when they changed the packaging the colour changed too. It used to be a lovely mahogany colour as the box stated but now it's very ginger. When I used to rinse it off in the shower the water ran a warm brown shade now the water runs off with a horrible mustard yellow. When the product is mixed it's very thick and a horrible grey colour and after a few washes it lifts very quickly giving me a very yellow/orange shade. I have complained to L'oreal.

detailedReviews 34: content: I have been using this for about 15 years. They have changed the formula, it’s hard to get out the bottle as it’s way toooo thick, so takes longer to apply. The colour starts to wash out the first time you use shampoo! By the 4th shampoo you can see the grey that had previously been coloured so it’s definitely washing out….therefore the packaging is misleading as it’s not PERMANENT!! Perhaps loreal want it to wash out, so we have to buy more and colour more frequently! It’s time consuming as have to do it often and getting expensive ….will Loreal listen to their customers?

detailedReviews 35: content: Like others, I have used this product for many years, and I fully agree, that this is now an awful product to use. From the nasty yellow colour, to the end result. This is not a cheap hair dye, but it is now far from excellent. Since when does a dark brown hair dye look yellow around the hairline?. It seems to be drying out in the bottle from the minute you start using it, so you have to keep shaking the bottle. I have also found that my hair when I shampoo it, feels thick and coarse, like it's been bleached blonde. It was never like this before, and certainly shouldn't feel like this with a dark brown hair colour. I wrote directly to L'Oréal 11 days ago, and they've totally ignored my questions, so Ladies, I suggest we all vote with our feet, and stop buying this awful product.

detailedReviews 36: content: Really not happy over the rebrand. I have used no6 for the last couple of years and always found that 2 boxes were enough for my shoulder length hair. I found the liquid was generous and gave really good coverage. This rebrand is completely different. No6 is now too light, it turned my hair a gingery colour and the liquid is thicker with not enough to cover my hair. My grey too was lighter and visible within a week of dying my hair. I've had to use no5 to go over to get rid of the ginger tone but again, 2 boxes were not enough due to the thickness of the liquid. I've managed to find boxes of the previous version thankfully but once they go, I'll have to look for a new brand unless you listen to your customers who are saying the same as me!

detailedReviews 37: content: So I was using the shade 7 %26 1/2 A or 7.5A, whichever you want to call it, "Medium Ash Blonde" and I was wildly thrilled with the end result, color-wise, and it left a beautiful ash tone and any warmth/brassiness was almost entirely eradicated. Not to mention how CHEAP (inexpensive) this dye is! Wish I could have kept using it forever, tbh. But I was noticing every time after I would dye my hair using this product, I would get these weird, randomly placed greasy(?) or almost oily-ish blotches in my hair. I tried for the life of me to figure out if I was doing something wrong - maybe accidentally leaving conditioner in my hair somehow - I tried switching shampoos, using Dawn dish soap(!) on my hair for goodness sake, and NOTHING would resolve these odd 'greasy' splotches! They just had to kind of run their course, and in a month or so, they'd be gone again. And by then obviously, not long after, it was time for me to re-dye, and then the weird spots would show back up again in just weird random places. Maybe four or five places. Like one would be around my ear and I'd have one near the nape of my neck or at the crown of my head. I finally worked out that it had to be this dye causing this weird reaction for me and decided to switch brands and try to find something else. Since then, it's been fine and this issue hasn't returned for me. But I wanted to mention it here just because in case anyone else is having the same problem... idk, there is something in this dye that can somehow cause this to occur. :(

I went from natural brown with some low lights to jet black using their 4A color which is supposedly a brown. After i washed it out and it dried for 5mins there's no difference. Certainly not very light blonde. My daugther already has dark bonde hair naturally so this should have worked perfectly. big fail. detailedReviews 44: content: I have used shade 5 as long as I can remember therefore I was disappointed with the results I achieved recently after colouring my hair. The colour did not take as well and had a kharki colour appearance at the roots, my children even commented that it was different. I had never had this before and my hairdresser suggested it might be a natural change in my hair and maybe not the product. I tried again same disappointing result. I wondered if it might be the hyaluronic acid which had been recently added as it was supposed to be the same shade, though I'm no scientist I know my own hair.
I reluctantly decided to look for another product without hyaluronic acid to see if I could get my hair back to 'normal' and chose another L'Oreal Excellence Crème but in Universal Nudes shade 5U universal light brown.
The results were brilliant, so maybe not a problem with my hair. The colour was a very deep brown, not what I would consider light brown. It is not as ashy coloured as the shade 5 I previously used above and has a warm very deep chocolate brown appearance in the light which I actually prefer. The root coverage is on par with the previous hair colour.
I have saved my review until my second use of the Universal Nudes and the results are great again and the coverage was consistent and didn't fade to kharki. It naturally grew out and needed to be covered up again as before with the old formula.
I have no idea if it was the new formula but in my personal experience there were definite differences since I started using that product.
I hope this honest review will be helpful to people like me who believe they had problems, there seem to be a few who have, and we can get back to feeling confident again which is what it's all about.

detailedReviews 45: content: I have naturally curly hair, and I specifically chose this product because:
The box shows two examples: one with straight hair, one with curly hair.
It clearly states: “GRAY COVERAGE FOR ALL HAIR TYPES.”
However, after full ingredient review and personal use, I must warn other curly-haired users:
The included shampoo contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) — a harsh surfactant that strips natural oils and damages curl structure.
The conditioner is not lightweight at all — it’s full of heavy silicones like Dimethicone and Amodimethicone.
It also contains alcohols (like Stearyl and Cetyl Alcohol), which may dry out curly hair over time.
The combination of sulfates + silicones + drying alcohols is especially harmful for curls.
This product does not meet curly-safe standards and will likely leave curls limp, dry, or frizzy.
L’Oréal, please stop advertising this kit as suitable for "all hair types" especially when your formulation clearly contradicts that.

title: New formula issues: runny, green tones, patchy
detailedReviews 46: content: Loreal excellence hair dye 4.02
I want to say how disappointed I am in the new formula of this product.
I have been using this number hair dye for a few years. I buy like 10 boxes at a time as I have to dye my hair every 4 to 5 weeks and use 2 boxes as I colour all over it's just easier for me. So i recently coloured my hair with two boxes. The formula is too thick!!! It's hard to get it out the bottle my hand aches from shaking and squeezing it, it leaves a green/yellow tinge on your hair and face now - I thought someone had put the wrong dye in and I was going to turn blonde instead of the usual brunette. Luckily didn't happen but that was not fun causing havoc with my anxiety that first time
By having to shake the bottle more hard to get the dye to the comb attachment when it comes to nearing the end of the bottle, some has come out on my bathroom floor lino and stained it.
I dyed hair using the new formula packs on 25th July and thought it was a one off. Now only 3.5 weeks later today being 17th august I am dying it again I don't feel like the colour has lasted long at all. As I said I can usually go 4 to 5 weeks and I use the same shampoo etc but this time it has lasted only 3.5 weeks that is disappointing.
I am actually so upset about this. I have 8 packs in my cupboard and I am dreading having to use them up whilst this formula is so thick and green/yellow tinged.
I am now having to look at another brand. I really am disappointed in this.

detailedReviews 47: content: My mum and I have been using the Rich Auburn colour for over 30 years. People have always commented on how the colour looks so natural and how healthy and shiny our hair looks. I used the new formula version about 2 months ago and was horrified with the result. My hair was bright red and the greys were not covered properly. Also noticed that the texture of my hair changed - it’s now very rough. Also the formula was very clumpy and hard to mix. I thought at first maybe I got a bad batch. But then my mum did it on her hair and same really bad result. So in desperation we tried the 5.5 Mahogany Brown - the colour was better but again the grey coverage was not great. Also hair texture is still not great. My hair grows very quickly so I red to touch it up every 4-6 weeks. But now because my hair feels so rough I’ve had to pay for very expensive hair treatments- which I never had to do before. The old formula was so good and reliable - why change it? It’s very disappointing as the results are now where near as good as with the old formula. I’ve even tried to buy the old formula but it’s almost impossible to find now. Please bring it back!!!

detailedReviews 48: content: I've given it 2 stars purely for the even coverage, non drip formula and not too harsh smell. Other than that I'd stay away. I am a blonde, my previous colour was 9.12 Garnier
After 5 weeks colour faded and wanted to stay within my 9 depth range but maybe cool it down a bit. Well... the colour came out awful. Dark, with muddy grey shades, dare I say silvery green tone, flat and just nothing like on the box. Don't get me wrong, I never think I'll look like the box shade and always accommodate for the shade to look different. But it's not like I'm moving from shade 6, 7 or even 8. I was 9 shade already, my hair is in a great condition and never ever had such variation on the result. Basically 9.1 Loreal excellence is far too ashy and dark!
Should really be numbered 8.11 and not 9.1.
First photo shows my pre 9.1 hair, then the second one shows the result of 9.1.... For some it may be lovely but for me it was awful result. But as an experienced hair colourer, I manage to fix it within 4 days without damaging my hair more. If you like deep ash, then you'll love it, but if not stay away as result will be much different to what you expect.

detailedReviews 49: content: So I posted 18 days ago about how the colour #3 I had used for 20 years is now suddenly darker. I tried #4 and still turns out too dark compared to what the box shows. L'Oréal reply was to use the tool on their website. I've done that. Your browns are still coming out darker than what you say they will. I've looked up reviews and other sites have user comments saying the same thing. I called L'Oréal Australia and they said it's the first they heard of it. Anyway I got #5 to see it that will work. My hair is darker than that, but if #3 and # 4 suddenly look black then maybe this one will look dark brown. Results.... my greys look a little darker than in the box, but lighter than my hair colour. However, never had this happen before, the colour faded and disappeared after 7 days. I know it's cheaper than going to a hair dresser but this is supposed to be permanent dye. For $30 a box and only lasted a week, I'd be better off colouring my hair with texters! This is it for me. L'Oréal is supposed to be a big name that you can trust. But just like Qantas, the name no longer is synonymous with quality. 10 years ago I abandoned L'Oréal skincare as it dropped ots standard. Now I'm dropping the haircare. Time to look for something better.

title: New formula darker, fades after 7 days
detailedReviews 50: content: I bought my usual hair colour which I have been buying for quite some time now, so I could colour my hair ahead of a small holiday abroad, to cover my grey hair regrowth and feel more confident. Since my hair has started to go grey it’s really affected my confidence.
I keep a picture of the box on my phone to make sure I buy always the same, as don’t want any surprises. Noticed in store the picture of the box had changed but the number was still the same (I buy the 6.3) and it also had a small picture on the top of what it looked like before, same as in my picture, and stating “New Pack Same Shade”.
Unfortunately this couldn’t be further from the truth.
I applied the colour as usual. I noticed upon mixing and application that the consistency had change significantly and was so difficult to get it out the bottle in the first place. As I was putting it on, I noticed the product had a dark greenish hue, which it never did before, and I started to be concerned something had changed, but continued the application, trusting the brand and also you’re kind of stuck with it halfway through.
Did it all by the book and when finally washed and towel dried my hair I noticed the disaster. The roots of my hair and the regrowth came out so light, almost bleached, a reddish coppery colour. A total shock given I was expecting my usual light golden brown. I was in a panic. I dried my hair and the result was evident: a much lighter colour then expected, my greys not fully covered, my roots regrowth of a much lighter coppery colour than the rest of my hair, almost looking like someone had crashed an egg on my head. I was in tears. Hate my hair and what this colour has done to them. Checking the box again and only then noticed the name of the shade had changed from my usual “6.3 Natural Light Golden Brown” to “6.3 Natural Light Golden Blond”. OMG! In what world are Light Brown and Light Blond the same shade to you?? This was the morning of the same day I was travelling away for a small holiday, taking a flight a few hours later, so there was nothing I could do to rectify the issue. I was so distraught. My hair looked so awful and had no option but to live with it. It really affected my confidence and had a negative impact on my holiday. I am now going to have to give away / throw the second box I bought and also find a new colour alternative, which let me tell you will be with another brand because I am not trusting L’Oréal with my hair anymore, this totally ruined it. I might even have to go to a hairdresser to sort out this mess.
Sadly I won’t be buying L’Oréal hair colours anymore.

Loreal did send me to a salon to have the problem corrected, and did send me new product - so this is the result of my 1st at home colouring since the last saga and using the replacement product. Again not true to colour, and not covering greys - and I left this on for well over an hour. At lease it came out of the bottle this time and it's not 'green' - but it's still not covering greys and is not the dark brown colour it should be. Obviously they DO NOT test their products, if they did - this wouldn't be happening. Also (from experience), sadly Loreal do not recall faulty products so I hope you read this and move to another product.

I am also finding it is not doing a great job of covering my grays/whites anymore, but have been excusing that as a fact of life as I age; however in reading other comments perhaps it is the current formulation. I totally agree with all the other reviews that say how awful it is now. I have tried for over 3 weeks to get a response from L'Oréal, but to no avail, so now am going to report to trading standards, as obviously, they don't regard their customers as "worth it". This product definitely needs to be withdrawn from sale, as it no longer lives up to it's claims, and is damaging to hair. Mine, when being shampoo feels thick and coarse, like it's been bleached blonde. This certainly should not be the case with a dark hair colour, and no longer has any shine. I have used several packs of this new formular, all bought at different times from different places, so it can't be passed of as a faulty batch. Whoever sells this product should read these reviews and have the decency to take it off the shelves.

detailedReviews 57: content: I used to love and use this brand and still do.
However, I had a really bad reaction to this product and still recovering.
So I would only recommend if you complete a patch test first, I found the smell really strong when I did the strand test. My eyes were red and swollen, I have had a rash all over my neck, shoulder and collarbone area. The tested area of colour applied has been red and itchy, I have had to resort to a Dermal cream to relieve the irritaion. I hadn't coloured my hair for over 4 weeks to be able to use this product. Apologies, I would love to give a great review, but i just really can't.

detailedReviews 58: content: I have used this exact product for YEARS, and it's NOT good now! It used to cover the gray completely, and now it does not. But the worst is, the colors are NOT the same!!! The regular medium and dark browns now have a brassy undertone. When the color starts to fade, it's RED!HATE IT! I don't buy the "ash" colors because of that reason, and now they've changed this one to be more like an ash brown. Thought it was just me, but my friend who uses the same exact thing said the same exact thing! I will definitely be looking for a new one!

detailedReviews 59: content: I like the L'Oréal hair colors, have used them for a long time. But this didn't deliver the exact color I was looking for this time. Although, that could be caused by the medications I take, so not all that concerning. What I was disappointed in was the fact that I had ordered this at the same time I ordered two large, 20 pound bags of cat litter. And they put all the items in one large box to ship to me. So the two 20 lb bags of litter pretty much smashed the small box of hair coloring, and the plastic bottle of developer arrived dented.

I moved several states away from where my salon is and was nervous about going somewhere to get color (my hair is blonde red). I had been talking to another similarly colored hair gal at a restaurant and asked her where she got her hair done. She told me she used this product so I decided to give it a try.

Like the Rosey Blush(P1), Coral Pink(CP1), Sapphire Smoke(P2), Fuchsia-Cha(622), or Medium Iridescent Blonde(822). I absolutely love that they have a number I can call if at anytime during the process I feel stuck or just need advice which is amazing! (The hair color concierge) They are available 7 days a week! And there is a text option also. There are many colors to choose from if you want to look through them, there’s a total of 27! There’s not many steps in this which seems like a easy process! The box includes: Conditioning color crème, Conditioning Developer Crème, Aromatic shimmer serum, Power shimmer conditioner. There’s also multiple tones in every strand, so it’s super easy to see the shimmer that the box lists.

detailedReviews 66: content: This has become my regular hair dye
Pros - it covers my greys, is easy to use, leaves hair soft and the colour matches my natural shade the most (I’ve tried lots on the market)
Things to think about - the colour doesn’t last forever (although by the time I need to fix my new greys, I just redo the full head and lengths). I would suggest using with blue/purple shampoo and conditioner regularly to avoid brassiness (the instructions say this too). The smell can be quite strong when first applying - it’s not something I could do over the side of the bath (head down) for long, it’s best to do standing up

We started this 17 years ago when most of my hair was dark brown. Over the years she's advised me when to change the colour to a lighter shade to keep it looking more natural. Excellence 7.3 is a mid blonde colour, but as I still have some dark hair with the grey, it makes me appear light brown.
The shampoo that comes with Loreal excellence is very useful, removing all excess colour with the first wash.

detailedReviews 70: content: I received this product free from Influenster and L’Oréal Paris in exchange for my honest review! To start off, I myself did not get the opportunity to use this dye since I just recently got my hair done, however a good friend allowed me to give her a makeover and boy does she look great! First and foremost I usually do not use box dye products, but this dye surprised me to the fullest! I was pleased to learn that the product was conditioning and came with a tube to strengthen the intensity as well as the “shimmering/highlight” effect. The dye was quick to setup and processing only took 25 minutes! Likewise, the product did NOT stain skin as badly as it said though I was very careful around the hairline. The dye also was not strong smelling, like most dyes making you lightheaded with ammonia and other chemicals. I was honestly unsure how the tone was going to come out since my friend had a rather badly toned blonde that was already chemically treated to begin with. But I was very pleased with the results and the tone overall! I definitely could see that shimmery highlighted effect as her hair came out with different tones of violets and blues even! The color is so vibrant and made her hair look very healthy. Furthermore, the dye came with both conditioning shampoo and conditioner which worked like a charm. Overall I’m really pleased with this, YES BOX DYE and I hope that the color lasts for her. I plan on giving her a touch up when needed since the dye is only about $11 at Walmart! Thanks L’Oréal Paris and Influenster!

detailedReviews 72: content: So as a male I’ll firstly say those three male targeted boxes just don’t do it for anyone, drab colours and low quality result. I had higher hopes for this, it’s changed from some years ago when I coloured my hair for fun and amusement as opposed to now when it is to stop being asked if I have a gold card at the supermarket (I’m early 50s). The product does an ok job, it doesn’t cover grey well really and it is not tellingly colour true, even the light blonde is rather more light brown, and dark blonde is brown. Ash makes hair go a weird off blue colour. I know the science and getting colours right is harder especially on grey hair but I think given this is the dearest in a box option I’ve found I expected better results. I did mine four days ago, followed all instructions and already I see grey temples. Maybe I should just resign myself to fate and borrow someone else’s gold card until I get my own.

detailedReviews 77: content: I wanted a not to dark not to light ash shade to tone down my at home colour correction from using professional colours but various darks that caused banding and a lot of left over red pigment. After 2 bleaches I was left with apricot orange and though it was way lighter than a base 7 I opted to go for this rather than the 10.21 colour freedom that fixed me last time. I'm happy with the result but not sure how it would fair on my natural base 7. Will review once I used it again when my roots come through. Overall I have a dark caramel blonde and although it's knocked out a lot of brass I'm still warm which really you can't expect miracles lol so I would recommend if you have a bleach nightmare. The colour mask that comes with is a mainly Blue based so ideal for orange correction (most are purple to knock out yellow) so that was a bonus. I've added pics of before then after in natural light and inside. I used 2 boxes of the 7.11. Not bad DIY colour correction at home if you want to beable to be seen in public again!

detailedReviews 78: content: I was very impressed with this L'Oréal product; the pack contains a number of specialised products that enable you to change your hair colour in a fool-proof way...
Inside a pack are 4 specialised products/ items; a colouring tube, a "developer" (which you mix the colouring into, & the product mixes with the liquid already in the developer tub), a post-colour shampoo & a hair mask.
The instructions are very easy to read & guides you on the entire process with printed images, making the entire experience pretty much fool-proof.
Once the product was in my hair, whilst waiting for 30mins for the colourant to take hold, I didn't experience any drips, or leakage onto the towel I had wrapped around my shoulders.
Washed & dried, my hair was fully coloured, no previous hair colour in sight!
The only negative experience I had, was that the "Natural Brown" colour I had chosen, was actually TOO dark - so dark in fact, that I do plan on going to the hairdressers for highlights...

detailedReviews 79: content: This is THEE ONLY box hair dye I will use is Lioresal. As a licensed cosmetologist I can tell you many, many, actually MOST box brands are very bad for your hair. I mean no hair color is good for your hair BUT Lioresal gives a product that has healthy vitamins and nutrients in it to restore any damage. It is an amazing brand. The hair dye is beautiful, and they also have an extremly wide variety of other colors and dye products such as highlighters and many others. The hair color truly lasts very long, ot doesn't fade and it is true to color. It doesn't take even an hour to dye just 20 to 30 min. Depending on the outcome you want, personally. The instructions explain everything very well and it's extremly easy to just add together, extremly easy to apply. Doesn't have that super harsh chemical smell most box dyes have. The after ward wash n conditioner is amazing, leaves your hair with a beautiful shine and even adds volume. I think this is the best brand as far as store bought box brand hair dyes go. Like I said, they're the only one I use, it's a very wonderful and trustworthy company and the results are proof enough!! You'll save TONS of money for the same look if not better and healthier, and even longer lasting. They're all priced at a very affordable price and if you have never tried it or any of their products, I highly recommend that you do, L'Orea Parisl is an all around innovative, trustworthy, high-quality for low prices, just an amazing company and brand. I would recommend any and all of their products to anyone and everyone out there. detailedReviews 80: content: This was the first time I have used a hair colour for many years. I used L'Oreal Paris Excellence Creme 5.0 to cover some of my couple grey hairs which were coming through. I built up the confidence to do the allergy test - which makes sense, but if you want to colour your hair on impulse, isn't somethng you would wait for. I tries using the part tool, the comb tool, but decided, I just liked using the gloves. I made sure I used a towel around my shoulders. I waited for the recommended time. Washed it out. I used the nourishing mask. My hair came out nicely with a slight red tinge - which I was ok with. My hair was not dry. The next wash, I used my normal shampoo and the nourishing mask again, my hair came out a bit dry and I had to use a serum.
I would buy L'Oreal grey coverage again, as it was a fairly easy process and covered my random grey hairs. It was close enough to my natural hair colour.

detailedReviews 81: content: I have used L'Oreal Paris Excellence hair color for 33 years now and have always been happy with the results. I get the Golden color I want and all is right in the world. I expect that due to rising costs of goods these days a price hike is enviable. After all I started out paying $3.97 a box and now it's up to $10.98 at Walmart where I have always shopped for it. So a $6.00 increase overall in 33 years isn't a bad thing. If only people made the money that kept up with these economic cost increases. Also, I've never known L'Oreal to cut corners on any of the products they sell. I purchase nearly all of my beauty products from them. Makeup, skincare, shampoo, and conditioner and I'm very happy with the company. However, lately, I have noticed packing flaws such as these new conditioner tubes. They're not very reliable and tend to split down the side. I don't exactly like scraping the box to get out the conditioner I need to finish my coloring process. I hope they fix that problem. Maybe if they get enough complaints they'll go back to the old tubes.
Also, I just wanted to add that these product peddlers that buy out all the inventory at Walmart and then make it up to twice the cost should never have been allowed to sell the products they buy from Walmart on the Walmart website. These types of people are raping the pockets of hard-working Americans... they rent homes to use as warehouses to stach these goods for resale and have armed people inside to keep out the thieves when they technically are thieves themselves. DON'T BUY FROM THEM... Let them sit on all that merchandise without selling anything. Maybe then they'll learn that when they come to this country capitalism doesn't mean you rob people blind for the items they need.

Firstly the instructions were easy to follow and all items easily labelled. I do have large hands and found the gloves to be very small and tight to put on. Everything once used I put in the box which helped me keep the area clean. There was enough solution to cover my just below the shoulder hair length. The ammonia smell was very strong. Overall i was extremely pleased with the ease to complete this easily at home on my own. Will definitely purchase again. The result was a nice colour that covered my greys easily. detailedReviews 83: content: I was lucky enough to be sent a box to trial this out.
I've always done a DIY hair colouring and I thought the instruction was straight forward and things are easy to use.
I tested the colourant as requested before I coloured my hair. Love the 2 attachments provided, I used both as a combo (did my roots with the funnel looking attachment and the brush for the remainder of the hair). Left it for 30 minutes and rinse, shampoo and conditoner were then applied.
My hair is black colour- and i thought post colouring, it would be more subtle. I am pleasantly surprised that it is quite nice (almost like a medium brown for me) and it stands out- totally dig it. I must say being a DIY, I'd need to concentrate on the medium to bottom, rather than roots to have even colour. Overall, totally recommend.

Looking at the reviews for this I was a hut apprehensive but said I’d give it a try. I’m so delighted with the shade it turned out. It covered my regrowth and my ends evenly and it’s exactly the slightly deeper shade of copper I wanted. I don’t know how people got brown/black results but my guess is they just have dyed over very dark hair to begin with. Dying over my bright copper this turns out lovely. Hair feels nourished and I loved the little hair mask and shampoo that comes with it. I think in future I’ll swap back and forth between this dye and the Schwarzkopf Mango Twist. Very happy

It was originally dyed 6 months ago and needed a good refresh. After just one use, my hair feels softer looks shinier and makes it look so much healthier. My hair is actually dry and brittle and this has made it a whole lot better.
The formula is easy to apply at home, and I like the fact that it didn’t dye my whole bathtub when rinsing it out. The shine and softness were noticeable immediately when it was dried. I’m excited to see how well the colour lasts over time. I highly recommend this dye for anyone looking to refresh their natural colour.

I am now sitting here mighty pleased with my beautiful new hair colour. It changed the orange to a lovely dark mink/mushroom blonde. So if your hair is orange, this will save you. If it's yellow, find something purple as this is a blue pigment base and therefore opposite orange on the colour wheel.

detailedReviews 87: content: I let my hair go completely grey for years now. I grew tired of the look and decided to take a chance and purchased this hair color. I absolutely LOVE IT! This is by far the best brunette hair color that L'Oreal has made to date! Prior to Covid-19, I colored my hair every 4-6 weeks, using L'Oreal but never really cared for the colors-that is, until I found this color. I am a very fair brunette. I am of Scottish and Irish heritage. I also have very rosy cheeks. This cool color really complements my complexion. I get complements from everyone, to include my upscale hair salon. They love the color so much, that there are a couple of colorists that are going to dye their hair this color as well.

detailedReviews 88: content: I have been colouring my hair for twenty years with L'Oreal Excellence Creme. This new version of 6.3 is a disaster. The green gloop that comes from mixing developer and colouring cream is so thick and lumpy, it doesn't flow well from the bottle. I really had to squeeze the bottle to get anything out.
L'Oreal advertise as 'new pack, same shade', but have changed the name of the colour from 6.3 Natural Light Golden Brown to 6.3 Natural Light Golden Blonde. And the result is lighter. No wonder so many negative reviews have been left. I shall not use this product again, unless it goes back to the way it was before. And what's with the foreign language on the bottle?

detailedReviews 89: content: Y’all!!!! I prayed %26 prayed because I couldn’t afford to continue with professional highlights, but I love my golden blonde hair. So I asked God to help me, and I felt drawn to this box. Today I went for it! This box is PERFECT! Not at all orange or ashy. It’s beautiful!Naturally, I have light brown hair with a gray streak right up front (see before %26 after pics). This box lightened my roots to perfectly match/blend with my golden blonde hair. I’m so thrilled and thankful! God is sooooo good. Trust Jesus and pray about everything. He loves you!

detailedReviews 90: content: I have used this hair color for several years and it is one of the best. It is easy to put on and comes out close to the color on the box. After a couple of washings my hair is left with little blond streaks which looks professionally done. I have had hairdressers tell me that I do a very good job putting the color on which I have done for over fifty years.
I would highly recommend this hair color to anyone wanting a refreshed color or to cover gray as the color will last for up to five weeks. Price is very reasonable. I always have several boxes on hand as I love this shade on my hair, it makes me feel young again.

detailedReviews 91: content: Thank you for this dark ash brown color permanent hair dye. I tried all color hair dyes that I thought would be great on me but turned out , it’s not for me but this specific color really does fit me well, it compliments my skin color and I thought lighter hair would look better on me but it’s too much maintenance, I really look my best in this dark ash brown color. I want to continue to buy this one just for me because I love it and I need to cover my gray hairs. I’m satisfied with this hair dye because it actually covered all my hair with one color and not two different colors (like the other hair dyes did). Just wanted to say a good review! Thanks

detailedReviews 92: content: I recently purchased the L?Or?al Paris Hair Colour in Dark Brown and I must say I am extremely impressed with the results! The color turned out beautifully rich and natural exactly as shown on the box. It gave my hair a smooth shiny finish and covered all greys perfectly. The application was very easy and the instructions were clear. What I loved the most was the pleasant fragrance and how soft my hair felt afterward?no dryness at all!Highly recommended for anyone looking for a salon-like hair color at home. Truly an excellent product from L?Or?al Paris. Will definitely repurchase! ?

detailedReviews 95: content: This stuff was quite nice! I do have naturally very dark brown hair that appears to be black and an old technicality. It looks black. I would say it is a number 3, as a number four is too light and a 2 is too dark. This covered my jet white hairs that I have appear out of nowhere. I also noticed as I get older. My hair is also growing out lighter so this help keep it the same. It also is not too dark that it looks fake. You honestly would not know that I have colored my hair. it was also easy to work with because it was excellence “crème”.. that way I did not stay in half of my bathroom. :-) I would definitely buy it again.

detailedReviews 96: content: I have usually had severe allergic Rx with another brand. However laureal has been a good color for me, but I do not know if this gives Rx. I have changed my color to this blonde color as per doc advise to try blonds. So this is my 2nd time of using the color. I have yet to see a color Rx with this color. Using lesser color with more developer though. I try not to use it near the skin or scalp. If there is a way to use plastic flaps for each layer color, may be better. Overall develops faster. But I let it on for 20 to 25 mins only.

detailedReviews 97: content: Mature with naturally dark (2/3) hair with over 50% grey Home bleached blonde (peroxide plus colour L8/9). Bleaching and coloring was both time consuming and damaging for hair. I used this for my roots only and 'smudged' any remaining colour onto the pre treated lengths. I chose Ash as I've red undertones. The roots look great but I think if you have bleached or light hair the ashiness might be a tad too grey.
I found the ideal combination is this on the roots giving a natural colour (brassy + Ash = neutral) then using a pearlescent conditioner on the lengths only. This gives a nice multifaceted more natural look.
I was pleasantly surprised just how much it did lift my dark roots. Easy enough to apply and didn't stink too much. Have been using for a few months now. Still on offer so cheaper than other leading supermarkets atm

detailedReviews 98: content: I am so excited to finally find a hair dye with excellent gray coverage! Normally I go for my roots touch up professionalky every 5-6 weeks but my gray has never been completely covered until now after doing it myself. Previously with hot roots but not with this dye. . . I mixed medium and light brown with no visible grays even at my edges!!! I did leave on for 45 minutes since I have resistant grays. I am letting all my friends and family know about this great product.

detailedReviews 99: content: Used it for my hair extensions. Doesnt dry the hair. Make it shiny as well. I recently tried a new hair coloring product and was impressed with the results. The color turned out just as I had hoped, and it left my hair feeling soft and healthy. The application process was easy and mess-free, which I always appreciate. Overall, I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a reliable and effective hair coloring solution. I'm excited to see how long the vibrant color lasts!

detailedReviews 100: content: I have level 7 reddish-blonde hair and I simply pump up the copper red color with this product. I get tons of compliments daily regarding my hair color. Not a colorist, I am a chemist, I do understand how the color wheel works and what I have to do to get the color I want and this works perfectly for me. I am a level 7 reddish blonde and this is also a level 7 copper/red/blonde so it will deposit perfectly and will pump up that copper red color I like so much. Keep in mind this is a copper red and will not be a true red. This has a red/orange base and will impart red/orange color. If you are seeking a true red then pick something else. I do get a kick out of my hair syulist at Regis who asked me if people do ask me if I am a colorist. She says the color is simply flawless and not everyone can carry this off as it deposits very heavily and it is very bright. The developer in this kit is 25 volume cream peroxide.

detailedReviews 101: content: I've been using this product for many many years. I have complained to L'oreal.

detailedReviews 102: content: I have used Excellence Creme 8RB for YEARS! I have natural red hair and this applies and colors beautifully. I use a coloring kit that has a small mixing bowl and application brush like they do at the salon. Since I have shoulder length, thick hair, I use two boxes when I color my hair and apply the color from root to tip in sections. The little tube of shampoo you use after you color and the bigger tube of deep conditioner is great! I always get so many compliments on my hair!

Worked on my hair. It covered 90% of my white hair which is great. The color isn't amber tho. More like mahogany and it's not very obvious unless you're under light. Hoping it will fade to a lighter brown or I'll just buy a different color next time. Courier was quick to deliver too. Thank you! 😊
