items 2: content: I've been using home hair dye for years so know what I'm doing. This new formula is an absolute disgrace and I can't believe it got through QC! I was doing a root touch-up so had it on for 20 mins then put the rest on for the remaining 10 mins. When I came to put the remainder on it had all separated in the bottle which was a worry, so needed remixing in my hand. When it came to rinsing off it was like swamp water, green. At this point I was panicking. I carried on rinsing and applied the mask and loads of my hair was falling out/snapped off, not sure which but there was clumps of it. I dried it was horrified, my grey roots were a khaki GREEN! This is when I came on and looked at the reviews on here and wished I'd read them prior to purchase. Honestly, if you're reading this and have greys DO NOT BUY THIS. Trust me, this isn't anything I did wrong, there is something seriously wrong with this new formula. I went back to Boots today and showed them my hair and told them to look at the reviews, the lady was lovely, went in the back to see the manager and when she came out she immediately refunded me. I then re-purchased an oil-based colour from a different manufacturer, redid my hair tonight and it's perfect . I will be taking this up with L'Or al due to the hair loss I experienced and the upset of having to go to work today with roots the colour of a newborns nappy.

items 3: content: I have been using this dye for years. Purchased recently and noticed that the packaging had changed but said on the box same shade. It definitely is not! I thought that the wrong colour had been put in the box when the dye came out green on my scalp and forehead. Not just a slight greenish colour but a disgusting shade of green! Talk about panic! I now have roots with a noticeable green tinge and will have to re-dye. What a disaster. What is L’Oreal thinking about selling this stuff. No idea how this got by quality control.

title: New formula turned roots green, disastrous results
type: REVIEWS
items 4: content: After years and years and years of using this dye, I have no idea what has happened but a green head whilst dye is developing, thick and cloggy in the bottle even after vigorous shaking, thick and difficult to apply and spread around well, and after all that effort, the colour is nowhere near the same as the previous formula (which went dark brown when applied). My roots are still so light to the point they look grey and I feel like I have wasted my time and need to dye again as there is just no depth of colour (which is a grey/green/slight yellow) Just awful. And to add insult to injury, my hair is so dry and brittle after this it's just awful. Do not waste your money. And please don't post a response underneath saying "discuss with customer service" as I already have sent them an email too. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!

items 5: content: I have coloured my hair for well over fifteen years, always use same colour number of Excellence natural dark brown . My stock was running low so ordered six packs online from Boots. Was going on holiday so dyed my hair. Formula was in a new style box but stated same formula. So thick it was hard to squeeze it out of the applicator bottle and when applied was a shade of yellowy green. Thought Boots had muddled up the shades as boxes open easily and had fallen into outer delivery box. My hair had such a distinctive green shade I used a different box but every box has the same result. Is this some sort of joke, cost me a huge amount of money, a huge waste of money not to mention my time and effort! Will not be able to use the remaining boxes and will need to change brands. Why change a perfect product into such a disgusting awful product ? I have for so many years relied on 'Excellence'.... has it been sabotaged? Feel distraught!

items 6: content: I’ve used excellence creme for many years and have been very happy with it. I recently bought two new packets that said ‘new packaging’ however they should have said ‘new formula’. This new formula is incredibly thick and so gluggy it can’t be squeezed through the applicator. It’s not the usual light coloured creme and is a disturbing greenish brown colour like baby poo. My hair feels dry now with next to no grey coverage. So disappointed I threw the second box out. I will never use this again.

items 7: content: The formula and name have changed. Previously called dark brown it's now called "Brown" and states it's the same colour and result but with a new formula. I've used this product for many years, this new version is very different. So disappointing and so bizarre they changed the name with no explanation and can claim it's the same result.
It didn't take fully on my hair, my grey roots were lighter and the colour is dull with a green / pond water brown tinge. Lacking the shine I used to get after using 4 "dark brown". Currently trying new brands to find a perfect replacement.
I can only imagine this product is now cheaper to produce or the previous had some bad ingredients that needed removing. Very disappointing.

items 8: content: Interesting to read some other reviews here about a green tinge to coloured hair. My hairdresser mentioned there was a green tinge to my hair this morning which she'd never noticed before. She suggested trying a warmer colour as my hair was picking up something in the dye. I was checking for a warmer tone today and noticed similar comments on here. I have used no.6 light brown for years and have never had this before. Guessing it's something to do with new formula! Think I'll try other brands as don't want green hair thanks!

items 9: content: I have been using this product for many many years, even though it is one of the most expensive brands it's my go to because I trusted the outcome. I dye my hair every fortnight and over the last couple of months (give or take) it has made my roots turn green!!! I wished I had look at the reviews before dying my hair today, otherwise I wouldn't have wasted my money again!! I was told to leave it in for 45mins, I did this time, the green is not as bad, but my roots are still green. What have you done to this product for this to happen as of late? Not happy!!

title: New formula causes green roots, not permanent
type: REVIEWS
items 10: content: I’ve been using L’Oréal Excellence Dark Brown for years and have always been happy with the results—until my most recent experience in October/November. When I opened the box, the formula seemed off; it was runny, and when I applied it to my roots, it turned a dirty, murky brown-green within minutes. I thought it might darken as it developed, but after leaving it on for the usual time, my greys were tinted green, and my natural dark hair had a sickly undertone.
At first, I blamed myself—was it product buildup, porous hair, or even minerals in my water? I let it fade naturally, avoiding harsh products to fix it. However, today I checked the reviews before trying a different shade and was shocked to see how many people experienced the same issue. It’s clear this is a problem with the new formula, not user error.
The formula issues people describe—runny consistency, green tones, uneven coverage, and difficulty adhering to greys—are exactly what I experienced. This product was once reliable, but the quality has dropped dramatically.
L’Oréal, what has happened to this product? Why haven’t these issues been addressed? Loyal customers like me deserve better than an untested formula that leaves their hair green and patchy. Please investigate this and listen to the feedback.

title: New formula turned hair green, patchy coverage
type: REVIEWS
items 11: content: 30 years I have used this product with no complaints, this new formula should have been taken off the market when the first complaints started. I suspected something wasn't right when I opened the first packet, so I opened another packet (2 different batchs) - it didn't look any better than the first packet, but I proceeded with my root touch up. The formula was a cacky brown/green colour and just about set like concrete in the bottle. Very hard to get out of the bottle, so applying it was also extremely difficult! After 40 mins it was still showing the greys, and had not taken on my brown hair also - so I waited a further 20 mins - and NO better! It is obvious this product was NOT TESTED before entering the market! It is also obvious that the company is LACKING CUSTOMER CARE, it should have been tested when the BAD reviews started. If they had tested it when these bad reviews started, surely L'oreal would have done a PRODUCT RECALL - because they haven't, I can only assume they haven't any customer RESPONSIBILITY!!! How many people have been inconvenienced I wonder?

items 12: content: Have used L’Oréal Excellence 7.3 for many years - without an issue. Purchased latest box and was shaking the mixture together and thought it felt thick. Started applying to hair roots and could barely squeeze the solution out of the bottle. Banged it on the bathroom bench as it was not moving at all. Managed to get some out and noticed it was green in colour. Great - have an expired bottle or something. Jumped in shower to remove what I had applied. Straight down shop to get another box. New box was still thickish to apply and not as bad a green colour. (As I had dropped a few specks on my towel from the first effort the spots were drying up a brown colour) - so that was the only reason I continued with the hair colour. First box got binned, so waste of money there. Could you please explain what is going on with the thickness in the bottle and the greenish colour it has now become. Obviously, no testing done on the NEW formula at all.

title: New formula thick and greenish color

items 13: content: So my usual Natural dark brown was discontinued and I couldn't find it anywhere. After several months, went into superdrug and saw that this one (4 Brown) was put on the shelves as a replacement for the old packaging. I was excited and bought two as part of a deal. I cannot begin to say how disappointed I am with this colour. Firstly, the colorant was very thick and wouldn't mix properly. When it finally mixed it created a yellow mustard creme rather than a brown one. Half way through application I began to wonder if I made a mistake. Needless to say I have yellow green coverage rather than brown. This is a horrible formula! Please do not waste your money and save your hair.

items 14: content: I've used this hair dye in the same colour for many years and loved it. Always had the same great result so no anxiety. The new formula is horrible. It's so thick it doesn't come out of the bottle properly, much harder to get even coverage, and covers a lot less. It was barely enough for a root touch-up. Also, they changed the colour. It's now a lighter, warmer brown which looks awful with my skin tone. It has no shine and colour is weird on my greys. My hair looks like I'm wearing a bad wig. I hope the other reviews are right and it will fade quickly. First time in my life I don't want this permanent dye to hold up.

items 15: content: This has always been my brand, and the first time I applied the new formula, it looked green 20 minutes in and I panicked, thinking I got a botched box. Rinsed it out and found my hair was still intact and greys were only slightly tinted. I tried again in 5 weeks with the same shade and another new box with the new formula. This time, I left the colour in for a good 1 hour (I usually give it 1.5 hours with the old formulas FYI) but still wasn’t to confident about this new formula. The greys did not really take to the colour as well as the old formula. This last time I gave it a full 1.5 hours and still the same. Could still see where the greys are which were only slightly tinted. The old formula covered the greys COMPLETELY. I hope L’Oréal goes back to the last formula before this. This just doesn’t cut it. Absolutely disappointed and it looks like I may have to change brands till they get this right.

items 16: content: I have used this product for many years but yesterday’ I applied the new “improved” product but is was so thick that I had to use both hands to squeeze it out ( it used to be easy to apply) but it either didn’t come out or a big glob of hair colour popped out which was very annoying. The old product was never runny it was just a good consistency and came out easily and at a consistent rate. This new product left my hair so stiff after washing thoroughly with the shampoo and conditioner provided that I had to rewash my hair the following day to get rid of the hard hair that felt like I’d used a hair spray. The roots don’t even look like the grey regrowth was covered…,, I am a very unhappy customer and I wish you would return to the older version of this product it is definitely not satisfactory.

items 17: content: I've been using 6.3 Light Golden Brown for years and it's been an excellent product, great coverage of greys, easy to apply...I would have given it 5-stars. But this new formula is terrible. No longer does it provide the same coverage, the colour has also changed and is now quite coppery. And applying the green sludge is just not user friendly either. L'orèal I don't know what possessed you to change the formula but if I were you I'd change it back asap as I'm sure I'm not the only one who will no longer be buying this product. So disappointing.

items 18: content: I have use this hair dye for many years and it has always covered my grey perfectly. My hairdresser even used to comment how natural the colour was. The new formula is absolutely terrible. Too thick to squeeze out of the bottle. It turns a funny green/brown colour on your hair. The colour does not last and it leaves a coating on my hair, that does not wash off . So disappointed with L’Oréal, please revert back to the original formula. Listen to your customers reviews, we all can’t be wrong.

items 19: content: Lockdown pushed me into using DIY hair colouring to cover the grey, and I was then a convert, using this ever since. The salon, at 5x the cost, didn't give me any better colour! But now they've changed the formulation. There's a new box (not the one shown here - this is the original product) which says 'new box same product' ... but it's not. It seemed different from the start mixing it (which made me look at the ingredients) and then it didn't colour my greys the nice brown I'm used to, instead I got a light ginger/golden brown, so the grey hair line was still very obvious. I managed to find one of the original boxes in a store so plan to use that (after 2 weeks not my usual 4) and then I plan to switch to another brand (I'm told the one Davina M promotes is good!). Why do companies mess with brands and then break them? Shame as the original colour was perfect.
