detailedReviews: detailedReviews 1: content: As a math teacher (and former engineer), I have seen and worked with many graphing calculators. I consider this one to be the best. With a library of over 600 functions, it performs nearly every calculation imagineable. This calculator can take you from high school through college. This calculator will actually factor (and perform other operations on) polynomials and other expressions containing variables (that is what the "CAS" designation indicates). One note of caution: you will not learn this calculator overnight. Texas Instruments has YouTube videos on it. It will take some time to master. It is really meant for those in technical fields (math, science, engineering). Once mastered, it will do just about anything.

title: Best calculator for math, science, engineering.
detailedReviews 2: content: Im a math major in college and if youre planning on going into any math-based field, this is the only calculator thats a reasonable price and does EVERYTHING. My review for math people: I used this starting in calc ii. For calc ii, it does improper integrals, double integrals, indefinite integrals (the TI-84 doesnt do indefinite or improper). Pretty sure it can do some infinite series and sequences (but I think only problems that dont evaluate to a number?). In physics, I loved using an inspire because it will solve systems of equations (mainly useful for when I did kinematics). For calc iii this calculator will graph in 3D and you can plug and chug any formula. For diff eq, this calculator will solve them and systems of differential equations and it will give you exact answers, which most calculators wont do. For linear algebra, theres nothing better. Its super easy to select matrix size and do literally anything. The UI on this model is nicer than the previous model, but other than that theres no difference (I was using the previous model before getting this one). For non-math people: Ive seen a lot of high schoolers (or high school parents) buying these. DONT buy this calculator if youre in high school. I pretty much guarantee you wont be able to use it because it comes with CAS (computer algebra system). No teacher in their right mind would allow their math student to use one of these in classits just cheating. If you want something thats better than the TI-84 and have money to burn, get this without the CAS. Also, you wont be able to use any TI-nspire on standardized tests with college board (except I think AP Stats?). You can use the one without CAS on the ACT, but not this one. If you are planning on doing college math (beyond calculusthis isnt really useful until at least multi variable calculus), it might be worth the investment. There is a little bit of a learning curve, but Google will be your friend. Its really not as complicated as it seems. I found it way more intuitive than the TI-84.

detailedReviews 3: content: This is the one and only TI CAS Flagship calculator. It is super fast, has color graphing, has a track pad, and of course it has CAS = Computer Algebra System which does/handles symbolic algebra and calculus. It handles matrices, vectors, finance; everything you need in engineering. You can name your variables to your heart's content, unlike the TI-84 ecosystem. It is programmable! Did I forget something?

detailedReviews 4: content: This calculator has been a major leap up from my TI-83 Plus. A lot can be said for the backlit, higher resolution and sharper looking screen which makes what you are typing appear neat and clean. The calculator also has a variety of options that makes simplifying algebraic inequalities and units conversions a breeze. One of my personal favorite features is how when you open a parentheses it will automatically add a closing one to your statement (always make sure it does it in the right place though!), a small but very nice touch to ensure your calculations always proceed as you want them and prevents you from digging into nested parentheses. While this review could go on, the sum of all of its features would take too long as each utility in the calculator is well-polished and intuitive to use. Apart from the software the physical casing is as expected from a TI calculator. It is made of the same very hard plastic with the protective cover and rubber feet (takes a little work to get it on and off for the first few times!). A new improvement is also how light the calculator is, it is easy to work with in a lab (work, engineering, chemistry, etc) without having to constantly put it down nor having your wrist get tired after a while. In conclusion I encourage you to try this calculator if you are willing to spend a bit of extra money, I was on the fence with a TI-89 titanium and I'm glad I made the leap to this calculator, it is currently serving me very well both at work and at school.

detailedReviews 7: content: Shipping was on point and the package came in excellent condition. Battery came in at 50% but that’s ok because that’s the proper storage/shipping percentage, charging with any phone charger is good but charging with a laptop and the included application is recommended. Not gonna lie the CAS feature is the selling point for me since the calculator has more processing power to solve symbolic algebraic equations/ expressions compared the the calculator model without the CAS. New ti-Nspire users might need to get used to using it, I had prior knowledge on how to use it and overall I think it’s a solid calculator that has your back on all algebra and advanced mathematics classes.

detailedReviews 8: content: I am currently using this calculator for an Engineering Materials and Engineering Statics class. I have an older TI-89 that isn't the Titanium version and a TI-84 Plus. The TI-nSpire is much faster than the TI-84 that I was using primarily. The menu driven color screen is so much easier to navigate once you get use to it. There is a big learning curve at first so don't buy one the day before an exam. I was motivated to buy it because of the capability to do cross products and dot products. These functions are easily performed once you get the hang of it. There are plenty of "how to" videos around to help.

However, calculating manually with formula's is still necessary prior to entering equations into calculator. They do not do all the work like I was hoping unless I code them specifically. The great news is that both my TI-Nspite cx 2 and TI/84 CE are codable. I recommended them both.

detailedReviews 10: content: They want me to say that it's easy to use... Ease of use for this kind of instrument is relative. Is it easier than using a Casio scientific? No, but that's not what it's made to do. The built in functions are excellent, and implementing them is fairly intuitive. The available libraries are endless for this thing, so that's nice. Battery life is great. Being able to migrate programs from your PC to your calculator is also wonderful. This thing is awesome, but if you're looking for a regular day graphing calculator, it can seem complicated. Recommended for engineers, physicists, chemists, software programmers, anyone that needs to reuse complicated functions and wants to incorporate them into larger algorithms... Not necessarily for mathematicians. They seem to want to do everything on paper still. :D

detailedReviews 12: content: Been using the NSpire CX for years now, best calculator ever. Just bought this and its the same with a few extras, no big deal. If the TI-84, or whatever people use, werent taught and used by everyone, so much that they are written into text books, these would be the standard. Cost too much money to rewrite millions of textbooks and retrain everyone though. So, these are a hidden gem. People say its difficult to navigate...its menus are identical to a computers menus. Open the menu and you choose which type of math youre looking for and the options are under that category, doc menu has identical options to a Microsoft word document. Really couldnt get any easier and cant recommend enough. I mean, it has excel built into it and it even runs rudimentary commands, and you can graph straight from the spreadsheet. I could go on and on, just buy one.

detailedReviews 46: content: I'm coming from a TI-84 Plus Silver/CE group of calculators. I impulsively wanted to get a new calculator and decided a TI-nspire was the way to go.
Initially getting used to the different button layout was fairly difficult for me and calculating felt slow for this reason.
One big con I have for this calculator is that I can't find a solution to accessing commonly used conversion operators like converting between rectangular and polar form for complex numbers without searching or typing out the expression manually (by adding "›Rect" onto the end, for example)
A great solution I'd like to see is a favorites tab in the catalog, but for the meantime, having a notes page with your desired conversion expressions written out, then copy/pasting it into the calculator window works alright.
Overall, the TI-nspire is a fantastic calculator. Some great functions I've used lately were expand(), solve(), and approxFraction (). Expand can give you a partial fraction from an input expression, solve can be utilized for many things, but for me gives a fast method of finding intersection points on a graph. Then, fraction approximation can turn any number into a fraction, which can be fine tuned with a certain amount of accuracy to approximate, which I've made use of many times.
Besides the main calculator, which is fantastic, I've also gotten to try out the TI Basic, Lua Scripting, and Python languages available. TI Basic has been great to use, besides some normal quirks it has like converting matrices or returning things in different forms (Using "Disp" is my goto workaround for most errors I get). Then, using Lua, it felt like I was trying out a beta test product, because I can't save scripts and it all just seems unfinished. Lastly, trying Python, I quickly found out that TI's implementation of Python was extraordinarily limited. I haven't been able to figure out a way to make use of it in any meaningful way, since you can't really call to a python script from anywhere besides the shell (and even this is limited).
The last thing I tried out on this calculator was Ndless, which works great (make sure you're on OS version Ndless recommends). The main pitfall for Ndless is that most of the programs Ndless offers hasn't begun to support the CX II family yet.
The biggest complaint I've developed is that I can't make my own hotkeys for functions, and I wish I could call to any program or script (including Python) within a calculator page.

detailedReviews 47: content: Can't ever go wrong with a TI-Nspire. I've used the normal TI-Nspire CX at school during all my 4 years in high school, so I've become fairly comfortable with operating it. But, I felt it was time for an upgrade, so I chose this, and I've got to say, best investment ever. As an engineering college student, this calculator really helps save time. With its CAS, solving integrals and taking complicated derivatives couldn't have been any easier. The buttons (arguably), in my opinion, feel very nice to click and make a satisfying "clicking" sound, which I like (compared to the normal CX). It has functions from solving systems, to analyzing statistical data, and you can even program your own functions using TI-Basic. All in all, this is definitely a must-buy for any college student taking high level engineering classes. One thing to note is that this (and many other CAS calculators), are not allowed on AP math exams. Also, as I'm sure you've heard. graphing calculators are not allowed in lower college math classes either (ex: Cal 1, Cal 2, or even Cal 3). It is, however, allowed on the SAT and upper-level engineering/science courses in college, at least in my experience.

detailedReviews 48: content: I'm an adult engineering professional, not a student. Really like the CAS system that solves, simplifies, factors, expands, etc. algebraic expressions. No need to convert systems of equations to matrices. No worrying about silly mistakes in algebra. I really like that expressions can be variables, makes substitution super easy. I'm coming from a TI-82 (it still works!) so I felt fairly comfortable, but still had to watch a few YouTube videos to get the gist of documents and an overview of the features. Read the manuals, watch videos, google, etc and the fun and power slowly reveals itself. I installed the software, calculator comes with a license but you have to download from TI's site. Used the software to upgrade the firmware to latest version no problem, transfer files to and from calculator, and the software emulates the calculator so you can use your computer for editing, screen sharing, etc. All very cool. Build seems solid, though not as rugged feeling as my old TI-82 which is built like a tank and survived many drops and abuse. Bought a padded case for this one, which I don't think is needed for the older models.

detailedReviews 50: content: Not a student, I'm a retired (but still active) engineer. I was a bit slow to understand the operational model, but one I began to grok that, and discovered all the improvements/additions to the "TI Basic" language I was hooked.
Then I accidentally discovered that the unit will handle operands up to 900+ digits. I'm ust beginning to explore that.
The "Student" software is reasonably well done, and is a good platform for editing programs that are not trivial. And with over 90 megabytes of storage, you can put in some beefy programs.
One complaint, shared by other reviewers, is that the cover, when placed on the back of the unit, doesn't fit well enough to prevent the unit from rocking when used while placed on a desk. I can live with that.
Recommended unconditionally, if you need its capabilities.

detailedReviews 51: content: I've had my TI-Nspire cx cas a little more than a week and I can tell that it's one powerful machine, but there is definitely a learning curve. If you're planning to use it in a course, spend some time to get familiar with it before the class begins. I previously used a TI-89 for about 10 years before switching to the inspire, and the functions are all in different locations, different menus, different keystrokes, so that there is no carryover when you switch.
My main reason for the switch is that my eyes are getting bad--The backlighting on the inspire was it's biggest feature for me. It has a beautiful display. A word of caution: The display is glass, just like most cell phones, so an insurance policy would be a good investment, especially if you tend toward clumsiness like me.
The keys are a bit finicky--they are not as responsive as on the other TI models. I would suggest that you try out the keys before you purchase.
But bottom line, it gets 5 stars. It is capable and easy to read.

I don’t notice too much difference between this and the first edition of the TI-nspire CX CAS, but runs smoothly and no issues to date. It is very different from other calculators and will be difficult for some to get used to at first though in all honesty I think it’s the only calculator you’ll ever need. I’m a junior in college studying business and the financial aspect is able to solve all of my problems with ease and much better than actual financial calculators. detailedReviews 53: content: The good thing is that it is reliable and seems to work well. Buttons are responsive and are consistent from one to the another. The charge lasts an entire day, however it would be nice to have a battery backup in case the charge wears off during an important exam. The downsides are that the charging cable does not connect direct to a wall outlet, but only to a computer or USB hub. It's also difficult to learn how to use. The up side is that it is allowed for use during the SAT or ACT test and it is clearly a quality product that should last many years. It is required for use in many high school Geometry classes.

detailedReviews 56: content: I am a high school student and purchased this calculator mostly for my calc 3 class I take at a nearby college. I had to decide between the ti-89 and this one and ultimately decided on the cx cas. My friends all own ti-89s and the key difference I saw between the two calculators was the use of templates. The ti-89 maybe much more familiar for many people but for me, the math templates makes things easier to integrate, differentiate, etc. Also the screen is quite beautiful but can be scratched easily. The screen is clear and vivid. The calculator is also extremely slim and looks amazing. Whenever I take this thing out, everyone always swarm over to admire its beauty. It always attracts attention. The battery life amazed me. It lasted longer than what Texas instruments said it would. I use this calculator very often and the battery was at 50% after 3 weeks of use. I am very happy with my purchase.
Pros: Templates are extremely helpful. Battery life is amazing. Expect people to compliment you (until this thing becomes more common.) Screen is clear and vibrant. Looks and feels amazing. Super thin Nice change from the typical ti-89.
Cons: Screen scratches easily. Some people may "borrow" your calculator longer than you wish .Getting locked in test mode could happen quite easily and has happened to me already. (just find someone with any ti-nspire and connect the two calculators then open up the document called test mode to unlock). Screen is a fingerprint magnet.

One just died, but the two others are still working, well, one of them would get tangled up on really big calculus problems, and I'd plug the same problem into my other one and different graph.... that was weird. I bought this new TI Nspire CX II CAS back in April 2020 and even at first the Cursor Mouse Square Section under the display felt strange. It recently started getting intermittent, that is, the click up and click to the side functions were iffy. Today the CTRL button works once for every 5 or 6 pokes..... but can really appear completely dead sometimes. You know, this is my 4th one and only one of the things is working and reliably trustworthy. Texas Instruments sort of has a monopoly on the market and they've taken advantage of it by skipping on quality inspections. Really, I store these things with the lid on and they don't receive any rought treatment. So when they break it is just because they started out wrong.

detailedReviews 86: content: In order to link this to a computer, you have to create an account with Texas Instruments, download their software, and purchase a software subscription. The process of activating the software is maddening. If you're wishing to use the more advanced features of this calculator, you'll be paying even more money and subjecting yourself to a very frustrating experience. Companies that behave like this should be put out of business. This is the last time I ever waste my money on their products.

The touchpad is wobbly and very loose. It just doesn’t feel like an expensive calculator when the touchpad wobbles around. It’s not just a slight wobble, there’s a lot of give to the touchpad.

The two things that are not acceptable are the USB port (mini-Usb) - it should be USB-C or micro-usb. The software doesn't work on windows 10 and mac - I have not been able to update my calculator to the latest version.
TI is a great innovative company - and I'm a bit sad that their calculators are still based on 10-20 years old technologies.

detailedReviews 90: content: This is obviously a very capable calculator which is why this gets 4 stars, but there are 2 things that I can't believe passed quality control. First one, when the calculator sits with its back in its sheath on the table and you type it will rock back and forth. I have a cheap Ti-36 that does not do this. My friend also bought this calculator and has the same issue. Second is it only lets you type super slow otherwise it stops recognizing the input, once again my dirt cheap Ti-36 does not have this problem and can accept a far higher input speed. For the money and given that this isn't the first iteration I'd expect fundamental things like this not to be an issue. Also really not a fan of the baby blue as the only color option. Mathematically, no complaints, but that's to be expected, this is the top tier calculator. Also needs a higher res screen, it's 2019.

detailedReviews 91: content: The TI-Nspire CX II Handheld Graphing Calculator is a full-featured calculator that can compete with other top-quality calculators. If this is your first TI calculator, you may find it challenging to take advantage of its advanced features. If you have used other calculators like the the TI-84 or TI 36X Pro, you will find it easy to learn this calculator.
The thing that I did not like about this calculator is the build quality. I have owned and used many TI calculators in the past and one of their standout features was their ruggedness. This calculator (TI-Nspire CX II) seems to not be built with durability in mind. First, the keys seem rather wobbly or loose, especially in the center part (numbers and mathematical functions) of the calculator. The idea of making the mathematical function keys (+, -, x, /) so small and with one-piece keys (+ and - together, x and / together, etc.) makes it difficult to input calculations efficiently. The 'enter' key, a key that is highly used in TI calculators feels very flimsy as if it will break after long-term use.
Overall, the features available in this calculator are excellent. The build quality of this calculator, however, leaves something to be desired. I am not sure if I got a calculator that was poorly built or if the poor build quality is inherent in this calculator. I do plan to return this calculator and get the same model to determine if maybe I just got poorly-built calculator that managed to get passed TI quality control. I will update my review after I exchange my calculator.

detailedReviews 92: content: I've had this calculator for weeks now waiting to start some online classes. I researched and read that this calculator is top of the line. The display is very nice. It's vivid in color and is large enough to read. But I'm not sure it's worth this much money. It's not even touch screen and the calculator honestly feels very light and cheap. Feels as if you were to drop it accidentally it might shatter very easily. Then there is the issue of how difficult it actually is to do anything on the calculator. If aren't trained to use this type of calculator there will be a very steep learning curve. It is very complicated for a beginner and not even close to being straight forward in use or the directions. I find myself using an online app called desmos most of the time since it is so much easier to use than this thing. Unless you have classes that require this specific calculator or you are very familiar with it I would pass. Even if I were more familiar I still don't think the quality is worth this price point because it feels so cheap in hand.

detailedReviews 93: content: Amazon was all out of the CX CAS IIs, so I just bought them refurbished here and I got what looks to be a brand-new CX CAS II for only around $40 more than a normal CX CAS. This comes with all the accessories and is, again, in brand-new condition. I haven't used a Nspire before, so I'm still learning how to use it, but at least it's dramatically faster than the 83+ I've been using for all these years. So from a guy that's been using the classic Ti graphing calculators, I will say that the UI is rather atrocious and convoluted. I don't know why Ti just can't keep some of the standard menu buttons to keep navigation simple. I'm sure I'll get better at getting around with this calculator, but for now it's very hard to do anything. The reason I bought this calculator was for the speed, so at least it delivers on that front.

detailedReviews 111: content: Calculators have come along way since I last used one. But my son needs one and so I bought one that could hopefully last him through senior high and university, if he so chooses. This is a very good calculator. It has many functions that the both of us trying to figure out through manipulation. I wish they had the old manual that they used to come along with the calculators. They have a digital copy, but it's not that helpful.
It's good to have the ability to store and write equations and a multitude of mathematical operations. My only concern is the battery power on an exam. It's a rechargeable battery with USB charging cable. I have never had confidence in devices that use those batteries and it must be charged by another device. It would be good if there was a power adapter that could also be used when a charge is needed.

detailedReviews 112: content: Beautiful calculator - love the aesthetics of it. Great display. Actually like the separate letter keypad for typing, but I have not regularly used other graphing calculators that combine the letter keys as secondary functions on other, more standard, keys, so I understand those that have may be annoyed by this keypad setup.
I bought this calculator more to have fun with it - yes, I guess I am a bit nerdy. I'm older and want to revisit Math, graph some equations, run some Statistics, do some light programming in TI Basic and Python (like the separate letter keys for this if I feel like typing out lines), take some notes, port and play some games - all in one hand-held package! And I can expand into learning its more complicated functions and features in the future.
Staples had this calculator at the lowest online price I could find at the time - too good to pass up!

I used a similar (but much older) model TI back when I was in high school and college (for engineering) and it was so much better than all of my friends' calculators from competing brands.
