detailedReviews: detailedReviews 1: content: I have been using these for around 3 weeks for commuting to work and their simplicity of use is excellent giving you total freedom without the restrictive cable. The noise cancelling is truly amazing with an option for ambient noise or OFF if you want to listen to things around you...all easily accessible from a button on the left master ear bud..
The purchase of the product was some what a leap of faith since I was unable to test any prior to purchase due to health restrictions being an in ear device...although the ear buds can be easily changed so I am sure demonstration units would be possible...at £179.00 I am sure this would put a lot of people off....which is no surprise and no doubt makes the item less popular...
This is a true wireless product with the earbuds being totally independent from each other...in most cases the left and right are connected via a cable...the left is the master streaming sound to the right...
From all the reviews read this is the Achilles heal of the product with notable disconnection of the sound from the right channel...something I have experienced already...which is disappointing considering the cost...
I have installed the WF-1000X Sony app to my phone which does give two options for setup...priority for sound or priority for stability...the latter improving operation although it does not completely resolve the issue. Using the app allows firmware updates to be monitored which is something which takes away the thought of having to check..
As I write this review revision 2.0 has been released which I have yet to test...it indicates this is for improved stability...we will see
I have given it a 4 out of 5 for rating with the disconnection problem stopping it from being a truly outstanding product...
Having said that this is a truly innovative product that is cutting edge in its field..this can only be approved on..
Am I disappointed in the purchase...would have to say NO...as overall this is a great product and would not want to go back to cables...
So to sum up...love the following
The gold colour option as opposed to the black
The charging case...this will potentially allow operation of the ear buds up to 9 hours..3 hours for the earbuds themselves with an additional 6 hours with the charging case...not tested for this duration...but have had no issues less than 2 hours..on another point the charging case is not bulky in my opinion... with lovely rounded ends for comfort in the pocket...
Simple operation with voice confirmation advising on Bluetooth connectivity, battery charge level and sound setup configuration..
The negatives...well only one...
As mentioned the sound disconnection on the right earbud...which Sony will hopefully fix with a firmware update....
Sony you have nearly delivered an amazing product!

title: Amazing noise cancelling, but right ear disconnects
detailedReviews 2: content: The positives; great and comfortable earbuds. Sound quality is good. Battery life is reasonable, and case holds a few recharges.
The earphones come with numerous buds - more than enough to ensure a comfortable fit and a good seal. There are some great aftermarket buds that fit this model, also.
The sound quality is great, as I have always expected of Sony products. The audio is crisp and clear, and the bass is responsive. These earphones stand up to competition - not as good as my V-Moda cans sound-wise, but more than adequate for my use (commuting, office, and gym) and super-portable. The adaptive sound profiling does a good job of matching your environment, also.
The other benefit for commuting is the battery life (approx two hours of full playing with noise cancelling enabled), and you get a few charges from the case (relatively quickly, too). I find if I religiously plug the earphones in to charge whenever I am not using them (while I am in meetings/on calls in the office, for example) I don't run out of battery. For longer journeys its certainly worth taking some manual headphones to preserve the battery life when you are up and moving.
The downsides; connectivity, noise cancellation, and notifications.
Bluetooth connectivity is not overly robust (especially to the right hand ear bud), and seems to struggle in locations with a lot of digital interference (trains, for example). This is despite me enabling the app to prioritise signal quality over sound quality.
The noise cancellation is not as effective as other Sony noise cancelling products (and certainly does not eliminate background noise, to manage expectations). While background noise is masked whilst listening to music or movie, they do not work robustly to just give you some "quiet headspace".
Finally, the notification LED (that flashes when there is a notification... really pointless, as you can't see it) and chime (that cuts in over audio... really annoying!) can't be deactivated in the app. This would be a really sensible software feature.
I haven't been able to work out if using a single bud switches to mono sound automatically (if not, this would be a great feature).
Overall, I would definitely recommend - especially for the price. Specifically, if you are after use in the gym, the office, or on your commute (up to two hours). I would not recommend if you need continual use for more than two hours regularly, or if noise cancelling is your key reason for buying - especially if its for the silence!
I hope that if Sony take anything from this review, it is to update the firmware/software to improve the noise cancelling, the notification options, the Bluetooth connectivity, and single-bud-use-to-mono. These four changes would make these little earpieces stand up to serious scrutiny.

title: Good sound, but connectivity and NC issues
detailedReviews 3: content: I got these for Christmas and I'm so pleased. They have great sound on them and anyone who says differently need their ears checking. I get the train to work through London every morning and cant hear a thing around me.
The only down side to the sound quality is that in some areas with lots of interference such as wifi's or train lines. The right ear cuts out so that they can prioritise some noise to the left. It doesn't cut out completely and normally only last a few moments while it establishes a new connection. Can be very annoying but overall something I can deal with.
They have an ok battery life, believe it's 3 hours in the headphones and also 3 hours in the charge pack that comes with it. For me this is more than enough, however if you are a person to listen to them all day then you'll probably want another set.
They sit really nicely in the ear. However, if you use them for running like I do and you sweat, then they are not great at staying in the ear. Saying that, when I changed the ear buds to the black foam like buds, they stayed in much better during my run and barely had to move them. They could do with just something that made them hook into the ear just a little better.
They look great, especially in rose gold, so liberally I am really happy with them. They don't have volume control so you still need to change that on what ever device you're listening to, but you can skip replay and pause songs via the headphones. Also there is an ap the updates the software in the headphones.

title: Great sound, but fit issues for running
detailedReviews 4: content: These ear buds are great. That is the bottom line. However the downside is the Noice Cancelling (NC).
First the bad news.
The NC offers nothing to improve these ear buds, they do a great job of isolating external sounds without it. For me it is just a gimmick and Sony would have been better making these earbuds cheaper without NC.
Also, I have attributed the reported drop outs of the right ear bud to the NC. Without NC on the ear bud connection is rock solid. Put it on and the drop outs are frequent.
Frustratingly NC is on by default and so you have to turn it off every-time you turn the ear buds on. Sony really needs to fix this in a future software drop. If I but a rubbish equaliser setting on it remembers this so why not other options I have selected.
Now the good news.
Even given the above problem I would still recommend these ear buds. The sound is clear, from delicate notes to heavier bass. At no point do they get overwhelmed by the amount of sounds being played and composed all the time. Putting some wired ear buds back in makes you realise how good the sound actually is.
The design of the ear buds is also very good. They are light and very comfortable, and you can wear them for the full 3 hour charge without problem.
The case and ear bud integration is also well thought out. Take the earbuds out and they turn on automatically. Put them back in the case and they start to charge. The case to me is not too large and easily fits in your pocket. It is also not very heavy.
So if you want some great sounding wireless ear buds then these are great. If you want noise cancelling as well then maybe consider some over ears. But from various NC units I have used i don't feel there is any value in NC overall as a concept. Other options are available.

title: Great sound, but NC is a gimmick
detailedReviews 5: content: I bought these almost a week ago and they have been under constant use. I use them on a plane, while cycling from and to work, while in a taxi, at home, on trains, on bus. My main uses are simply to cut out the noise at work which is a constant nuisance, to listen to music or podcasts, and to be connected with my phone mainly to answer calls and to use Siri...which I heavily use. I wanted this kind of gadget, firstly because it gives a better use of technology such as Siri. I also needed them for my workplace as the noise is too tiring. I have reviewed and re reviewed all the major brands. The outstanding differences between Sony and the rest is very simple...the rest almost never offered noise cancellation unless you are ready to have a neckband (which I am fine with but I didn't want) and unless you are ready to pay £100 or above more than the Sony cost. Some do offer better features like better battery life, water resistance, volume control and a smaller carry case. I was already thinking of buying a set in the future as the price for me at the moment was prohibitive...until I came across the Sony ones. I honestly didn't even know Sony did them and I was happy to find about it from a shop at the airport. So I thought of checking the price and the details. They had active noise cancellation and the price was superbly feasible for me! So without further questions I got them. I had Sony earphones since the 1990s. I didn't own a lot of models as they seemed indestructible...well...I still have some of them! My review...I love the sound. One of the best I have ever heard...ever....I love Bass rich sound which doesn't compromise with the mediums and high frequencies and these are perfectly balanced. They are light and comfortable enough to wear and forget and my ear sockets are quite a bit smaller than average. But using the small ear rubber provided in the package made it possible to fit them, even if they're a little tight. The noise cancellation is a great feature and it works very very well. Obviously it won't turn a noisy place into a super quiet place but my noisy workplace became very bearable especially if I allow some low music or podcast to play. The iOS app does a good job too to vary the noise cancellation level. The battery carry case gives some good extra juice for a longish trip. Haven't tested them to the full as I use over ear headphones with noise haptic feedback on a flight...I love feeling a movie rather than just listen to it. The little button on the right ear bud works great too. It helps to quickly pause music and resume when needed. It also helps to quickly skip to the next song. Taking a call seemed very good too. I could hear the caller very well and they could hear me well too. I must say that the taxi driver did mistakenly understand the place I mentioned I'm going to over the phone but I am not sure if it has anything to do with the quality of the ear buds. I can only say that I haven't tested them for long enough in this area. Overall I love them and for the price they are worthwhile. Now...the lowsides: Battery life is extremely short...too short, around 2 hours if no noise cancellation is used but with constant listening to music. The battery carry case charges the earbuds quickly and with a quick short charge you'll get a very good listening time once again. The case itself however takes a long time to recharge....and the biggest downside is that you have no way of telling how much charge is left in the carry case, sadly. This should really be taken into account. The case itself seems a bit too long but I have found that although it looks weird it's easier to carry if you are not a big person! The earbuds themselves do have one big downside....the right side cuts off a lot more than I would like I happily accept. There are many moments when listening is flawless from both sides but at moments the right just decides to keep cutting off. It did improve with the software update and by adjusting the position in my ear. Switching off and on again sometimes helps too. Performing the software update was a pain. I had to try several times and methods until I got through to it...but at least it is doable. My biggest suggestions would be a battery level indicator on the case and that the iOS App supports 3D touch on iPhones. Using 3D Touch to quickly adjust the noise cancelling level would be the perfect addition. Having a Widget and Apple Watch support, even if it is just for the volume and active noise cancellation levels would be another very powerful addition. If you are on a budget and want noise cancelling these are the earbuds for you. But Sony please hear us...please do make an App which suits us better and try to update the earbuds software to reduce the noise cutting from the right earbud! There again...these earbuds are worthwhile. I have already spoken to two of my work colleagues who are set to get them as well very soon!

title: Great sound, but right ear cuts out
detailedReviews 6: content: These truly wireless earphones sound really good, and that is their saving grace but they do have some flaws which make them a nuisance. Firstly, the battery life is not three hours. It takes a long time for them to charge again (around and hour and a half, and there is no indicator on the charging case showing the battery level of the case or the earpieces). Depending upon how much time one might continuously use the earphones, the timing of use/recharging may not be ideal. To charge the earphones inside the case it takes around and and a half hours, and the earpieces could be fully charged twice. The case takes three hours to charge so if you use these all day long, you will probably will run out of charge at some point and then charge the care for further use. When the headphones are used, even with ambient sound mode and noise-cancelling off. Speaking of noise-cancelling and ambient sound modes, neither are effective and personally I have never noticed any difference between the settings. However, outside sound does not filter in very much when the right ear tops are used because they should ideally create a decent deal. There are sound drop outs in the right earpiece, even with the latest firmware (at the time of writing). It doesn't bother me too much because it is relatively rare and the problem corrects itself quickly. However, it is a shame because the sound quality is much better than many other popular brands in this price range. One thing I hate is the printed writing on the earpieces. It is susceptible to fading and there is not much you can do about preserving it because when you insert the earphones into the charging pod, the writing brushes against the case. I hate when things start to look worn out, especially when harder wearing alternative ways of improving text could have been used. The one other thing I like about these is that their internal battery could potentially be replaced with some effort. Apple's variants so far have proven impossible to repair so I think for a premium product, at least this one has the potential to outlast other products. Sony improved the design and the subsequent iteration is said to be much better, but those cost more and the price has dropped for these. This is still a quality product but one that should have seen some of the links ironed out. If the links don't bother you a great deal, they are worth investing in. Oh yes, and one final thing. The earpieces are a little heavy once inside the ear and I have found that they have actually fallen out (even with the best fitting tips). Due to their weight, a fall could cause some scuffing or other damage. Thankfully the falls mine did sustain were not serious.

title: Good sound, but battery and NC flaws
detailedReviews 7: content: Stylish champagne silver noise cancelling earbuds which are very comfortable to wear, twisting into place so that they can fit perfectly to your ear shape (extra bud fittings provided so that you can choose the bud for you). They have a great battery life of 6 hours, but if you are going to be out and about for longer than that time, they come with a compact rechargeable case (which is also their portable battery pack) you can carry in your pack/bag. The case contains magnets, so that when you pop your earbuds inside, they snap securely into place. Absolutely love these; very inconspicuous and deliver amazing sound while I listen to music on the way to work.

title: Comfortable, great battery, amazing sound
detailedReviews 8: content: I was fortunate enough to acquire these as a special offer from Sony with my Xperia phone. I hadn't previously been convinced by Bluetooth earbuds and I have a pair of Klipsch earbuds that I usually use. I have to say that the sound quality from the Sony buds is fabulous! Very comfortable and I love the flexibility of not having wires!
A number of reviews mention connectivity issues although I haven't experienced this myself...and the settings can be changed within the app to prioritise connectivity. This appears to have no impact on sound quality.
You can also adjust the equalisation by using the sound effect settings within the Spotify app so there's no problem getting dollops of bass and searing treble if you want it, without using the settings in the headphone app.
Battery life is ok but I have found it necessary to take the charging case with me for the odd top up...pretty quick to charge though.
Overall a lovely product.

I use for walking next to busy roads and as long as you get a good fit with the right size tips, they sound very good in noise-cancelling mode. I use with Fiio M6 with a heavy bass EQ and the bass response is super good. Very comfortable too.

I haven't tried it .I bought them for music. I had trouble getting both to pair and turn on. Sony tech support was about to give up and while on hold they started working. No problems since. The refurbs came with no instructions. Battery life is short but they recharge in the nice hard case quickly. I like how they store and charge a lot. There's not head shaking bass but good enough for me. I have head shakers. You need an app on your phone to operate the noise cancelling and eq presets. The noise cancelling works!!! They stay in your ear and come with lots of sizes of tips. I'd recommend them.

detailedReviews 26: content: Delivery was prompt. The headphones have impressive music quality, they are light and comfortable to wear. The noise reduction is minimal but with a good fit music it is ease to hear when walking in a busy city. The nearly 3 you’re battery life is ok and the recharging in the box is seamless. The volume of some of the some downloaded music is low when in blue tooth connection with an iPhone but this is not the earbuds fault.

detailedReviews 27: content: Got fed up with people slagging these off with so many mixed reviews. The honest truth is that they are fantastic. They fit in your ear really well and don't fall out. Battery life is reasonable - not excellent but perhaps that is because I have a secondhand pair. Sound quality is superb and noise cancellation is really very good and noticeable. Very occasional loss of connection but by the time you've noticed it it's done. I read a review that said they were useless for watching video as they had a lag but this is incorrect, I watch films on my phone using these all the time and they are faultless. Don't believe people that say they are not good, I'm not sure what their motivation is for saying that but in my opinion it's dishonest. These are a really solid - an amazing sounding, high quality product.

detailedReviews 30: content: After several attempts at using other products I settled for the 1000X.
The sound quality is excellent with options of, noise cancelling, ambient sound, or standard. They are easy to set up and use, and if using the Sony headphones app, can tailored to suite your individual needs. One concern (which is easily rectified) is that the right ear bud does not alway link in. The left bud works fine and connects to my source straight away, but sometimes it takes several attempts of turning on/off of the right earpiece before it connects. Sometimes frustrations.

detailedReviews 31: content: A great pair of wireless, small, portable earphones. These do work really well when you realize what they are meant to do. They are not to replace bulky over the ear headsets, they are not meant to silence the outside world and they are designed for people moving about. As with all wireless kit (such as your phone) they are affected by other wireless sources of radiation.
I have had them for about a month while I travel throughout Europe and they fit the role above. As a better sounding alternative to the apple earbuds, they are worth the money. The only thing I have noticed is the choice of buds does make a big difference to the sound quality and noise reduction - had to try a range of sizes and material before I found the best fit.

detailedReviews 32: content: Had the 1000X's for about 2 weeks and while the sound is fine once you play with the EQ settings the Noise Cancelling feature (One of the main selling points in my opinion) is non existent, as is the ambient noise mode, in every environment I can switch between the 3 modes and there is no discernible difference. Also signal drop outs in the right and left unit are frequent despite them being set to prefer signal stability. Also the constantly blinking lights make you look like your a plane coming into land which is down right dangerous if out at night, you're basically asking thieves to come and get your new tech. If you want an ok sounding set of truly wireless and can ignore the frequent signal drop outs then give the 1000X's a go but do not buy them if you want the noise cancelling tech as you will be sorely disappointed.

detailedReviews 33: content: The sound quality and the noise cancelling are awesome. However, there is one thing that makes me wonder that there is a design flow. The ear tips, or the fitting of them to your ear canal are not really snuggly. It could have been better designed to fit just perfectly to your ears, not a go to one if you are exercising . They will fall of from your ears, after some jumping or running. I have tried all supplied ear tips, even the best fitting won't last long while running.

detailedReviews 34: content: I saw an ebay offer for refurbished buds for $88. I bought some kind of extended warranty afterwards for $11. I read the reviews about the delay while watching movies.

I'm guessing it has something to do with having repairs done prior to my purchase so the mic for speaking is distorted. Other than that, I use them for my workouts and I don't have to worry about them dying right away. I do admire the charging case tho. This is my first pair of earbuds without a neckband. They say "Noise cancelling" the only form this worked on was volume, I set them up and made sure it was on noise cancel and until I got the volume to a set level they didn't cancel the noise out, I put my old wireless headphones back on and the same volume and no outside noise; I actually managed to turn the volume down without hearing background noise. The main reason I purchased them and probably the same reason others will buy them, also they cannot work independent of each other so you have to have both in and on. I know everyone has different shaped ears but the way they are held in is all well and good until you sweat and then they fall out.

Unfortunately there are not too many headphones of that sort in the market. Unless you pay $400 studio wireless for beats or $420 for sony's own MDR series there are not any that are ANC and bluetooth. These are very good quality headphones, beat is great, crisp mids and ambiance is amazing. The only downside is the ANC, it ist just not much effective. Even though you can acknowledge its presence however it doesn't wow you similar to Audio Technica or Bose. It is amazing as a bluetooth noise cancelling headphone, but if you judge it by the noise cancelling aspect you would be a bit dissapointed.

detailedReviews 67: content: I bought these from Richer Sounds, updated the firmware. They fit quite well. The box/charger is neat. The sound in one ear cuts out continuously, making them unlistenable to. The 'fix' for this reduces the sound quality to such an extent they're worse than my £20 pair of 'phones. The noise cancelling makes no discernible difference. The battery life is poor.

detailedReviews 68: content: Having used the earbuds now in most environments, gym, walking, running, train, etc. I am still very pleased with the fit - never come loose - the sound - loud and clear enough and with ok noise cancelling. Only thing that detracts (and I'm happy to live with) is that the individual buds seem to reconnect to each other after a while in play, this causes each bud to drop sound for a second in sequence. Not a big issue but not sure why it would do this. Overall, I would reccommend and would certainly buy again.

detailedReviews 69: content: I bought these to work out with and for travel but have found that the stated 3 house battery life depends on what you are doing with them. I have never managed to get 3 hours battery life from them and after contacting Sony support, was told that it depends on what you are doing to obtain 3 hours battery life. Sadly, it seems using the main functionality of these, ie, noise cancelling, sill reduce the battery life considerably. The best I have achieved is 2 hours but I am told this is quite normal. Sony need to sort this out as they are useless on a long journey without several charges.

One great thing about these is the downloadable Sony headphones app which let's you tailor your listening experience. One draw back is the bass, this is probably the cost for a lightweight truly wireless earbud. Overall, a great buy!

Excellent audio
Cons
Unfortunately it can't be used to watch videos as audio is out of sync by probably 1 second.
This is what I can read from your website: "Due to the characteristics of wireless technologies, playback in the headset is slower than the playback of sound and music in the transmission device, so when using it to watch videos or play games, the picture and the audio may be out of sync". detailedReviews 76: content: I sort of feel that they're missing something. They don't feel special and although the packaging and charging box are nicely designed, that's about where it stops.
Now in fairness to Sony I bought them to use with my laptop and for work calls not with my phone so maybe they're just not designed for that but....since I paid well over £100 for a set of headphones I didn't expect to have to continually resort back to using my very old wired apple headphones just to be able to hear or do anything. Even when they're working ok the sound is still considerably better on my wired headphones.
- They're missing a sound control on them so I can adjust it without using my laptop or phone.
- They continually break up to the point I can't use them on video calls
- they always pick up the noise of my son or other people's talking so I can't use them if he's in the room and I can't be on mute.
- the actions that you can use could also be more responsive.
Basically I'm just really disappointed that I spanked a load of money to get some good quality reliable headphones with some intuitive technology and I get none of those things so I can't really use them.
For me they have been a waste of money.
If you're using them for you phone I'm sure they're great. If you need them for work/laptop purposes they're terrible.

detailedReviews 77: content: I was excited to pick up these earbuds for daily commuting after reading a glowing review in WhatHiFi, but they ultimately disappointed me more than I could tolerate.
To be sure, there are positive features of these headphones which readers can find in sales brochures and other online reviews. Those positive features were utterly outweighed by the failures of this product. These are primarily to do with a) the right earbud and b) Sony's companion Headphones app. These headphones are the first piece of high-end technology I have ever come to hate to use and the first I've ever returned.
1) It's just too weird to use for phone calls and have incoming audio on the left side only. I know that this is by design, and not a fault, but it was off-putting and unacceptable for a product in light of the recommended retail price.
2) Even following the directions, it was difficult when removing the earbuds from the charging case to make sure the right bud turned on and connected immediately. I often had to hold the button on the right bud to connect it after only hearing things out of the left.
3) Once both buds are paired and running, the right earbud's connectivity is so poor as to make this product unfit for purpose. I sat in a library with my phone on a desk 18" away from my left side and couldn't rest my chin on my left hand without losing connection to the right earbud. I have seen Sony's responses to other similar complaints, generally suggesting that congested wireless environments may be a problem (and no doubt my body was disrupting some of the signal in my library example above), but that is entirely inadequate. A top-of-the-line product commanding a price such as this set is simply not ready for market if one half of the system cuts out and fails routinely.
4) The companion software on iPhone allowed me to prioritise stable connections over sound quality, but this preference was reset every time I turned off the earbuds. It was highly aggravating to have to open the app every time I used the earbuds—even then, listening in stable connection mode would sometimes cut out altogether and reset to sound quality mode.

detailedReviews 78: content: The Sony WF-1000XM3's ANC is ok, Bose QuietComfort earbuds ANC is noticeably better. The WF-1000XM3 always has ANC on when the earbuds turn on. With ANC on, there is slight white noise that doesn't appear to be present with the Bose. Sony's disconnection/connection etc. sounds are all in English, unlike Bose which has part English, part random sounds. Sony's voice is more natural, whereas Bose's voice is 2015's robotic voice. One of the reasons why I'm keeping the WF-1000XM3 is the lovely case; it looks and feels superb, it's a shame that they don't stand upright though. In terms of sound, with default settings, I'd say the bass is missing, you'll need to use the Sony Headphones Connect app to configure extra bass; the settings seem to save onto the earbuds, so you don't need the app after. The app doesn't need or nag you for location permissions after you've paired the earbuds, unlike Bose.

detailedReviews 79: content: Five Stars.
I upgraded the firmware to the last release and the connection is stable, the video is sincronized.
The earphones looks gorgeous and very well built
They sit firmly and very confortably in the ear channel, and provide a very good passive noise isolation.
The sound is impressive covering the full range and giving the impression of listening in a concert hall as if the sound is processed with this purpose (and I believe it is)
Sweeping with a signal generator the 20-20k range confirms the capability to reproduce the full range, even if a sort of a noise appears between 1k and 2k and at very high frequency (>12k)
The charge duration is the one declared. (But it looks like a short recharge is enough to give quite some extra time)
It is annoing that the end of charge is announced only a moment before the earphones shut off with no mercy
The case is very robust and built with care, but could be a bit too bulky to be forgotten in a poket
The active noise cancellation is a joke, totally useless
The bluetooth connection becomes unstable in places with a strong EM noise such as an Airport (common problem with bt)
All in all I am very happy with the purchase because of the gorgeous sound, the confort they provide, the stable connection, the current retail price.

detailedReviews 80: content: I bought these after speaking to the Sony rep in store at John Lewis in Glasgow. I explained I wanted a decent noise cancelling feature and stable connection. I was leaving on holiday the following day and wanted to watch a few movies to take my mind off flying (which I hate). I guess if I had more time I might have searched for more reviews but here’s my thoughts on these earphones.
First thing I noticed was the noise cancellation feature is poor to the point I’d question its fit with the definition. The rep said once activated it would easily cancel the ambient noise of the plane. This was not the case. In fact I couldn’t get the volume on my iPad loud enough to stop the in-cabin background noise interfering with the movies I attempted to watch.
Second big issue is connection. It dips in and out even when sitting still so you can forget about listening to anything for a prolonged period of time without the frustration of losing connection in the right bud.
I like the recharging/carry case and the build quality feels good. The sound quality is good when working but this product has really significant flaws that cancel any positives. Kind of feels it’s been rushed to market without a comprehensive test. Sadly as a customer I’m trying to avoid a guinea pig experience. Once I’m home and the holiday wash is on I’m popping down to JL for a refund.

detailedReviews 81: content: I'm amazed at the sound of these headphones for music playback. They're almost as good as my old set of Shure 525's for playback of the the ACC files you get with Apple Music and much more convenient.
Using them to take voice calls however was and continues to be a disappointment. When the phone rings the right unit stops sounding and you hear the call in mono only from the left unit at a much lower apparent volume (probably because it sounds exactly the same as it would if you tried to listen with only one unit in). Also my voice (apparently) sounds weak and muffled to the other participants in the call (which doesn't surprise me bearing in mind the poor quality of my user experience using them to listen to the call). For professional calls this makes them unusable and I find myself having to whip them out my ears and use my phone or quickly plug a wired headset in which defeats the object completely. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will be fixed with a software / firmware update as you wouldn't expect this from such a premium product.
The only other problem is that they can work loose in the ear and fall out - this has happened to me a couple of times whilst walking. An easy fix for this would be to include compression foam inserts that can mould to the contours of the inner ear and hold them in more than the ones that currently one with the product. I use these on my Shure for the same reason and I'm currently scouting around to see if I can get some for the Sony.

I google it and find this is a common issue with these headphones rendering them useless.
I contact Sony and get told to fix it with reset and initialising as described on Sony website to no avail.
I contact Sony again no reply so nudge them again and get told to do an update of the firmware, only problem with that is that you can not do it with a none working headphone. So headphones still useless.
I contact Sony yet again and am told they need to be sent back for repair but not until after the 11 May 2020 due to service centre being closed due to Covid-19.
So I will have to send back a never used set of headphones for repair.
I will try to update this review once I know the outcome of this.

detailedReviews 83: content: I own a pair of over ear noise cancelling Sony MDR 1000X headphones for day to day commuting. I chose those over the Bose equivalent and am extremely happy with my choice. However for when I wanted to travel lighter or for use in the office when I want a bit of piece and quiet, I decided to buy a pair of WI-1000X noise cancelling earbuds.
The noise cancelling on the ear buds, unsurprisingly, is not of the same quality as their over ear cousins. Nevertheless they are impressive for the size. The battery life works OK for me as I wouldn't want to wear earbuds for more than 3 hours anyway and I've not run out of charge so far with the charging case.
The flaws are the same as the ones you'll no doubt read in other reviews. Firstly, they are laggy when it comes to watching video. I don't have that problem with my over ear headphones (so no, it's not just Bluetooth) but these certainly lag - 0.42ms to be precise. Whilst you can compensate for that in some apps, that's not always an option (such as with Netflix).
The other flaw is the one I'd heard about before I bought them - that the right earpiece (the slave to the left earpiece) drops out from time to time. Mildly annoying but nowhere near as annoying as the audio lag.

detailedReviews 84: content: 7.5/10. I bought these a year ago and they always performed fairly well. The noise cancelling works pretty decently (unless you are on a loud train or someone is talking quite loudly next to you).
Had some sync issues with a couple of games on my phone and sometimes with Netflix, but nothing that would ruin the experience unless you are obsessed with precision. Works well with conf-call on hang outs. Phone calls wise, sometimes people can’t hear me well on the other end and have to switch back to the phone.
I haven’t tried them while cycling yet.
For the price, I think they are a good product for who isn’t obsessed with having top notch quality. Trebles and bass levels seem to be working great with all the different genres.
Comfortable fit, with many different options. Case feels sturdy yet slightly gimmicky, but protects them well and charges them quickly.
Design wise, feels like I am wearing an old school Bluetooth set. I don’t mind, but I get people to stare quite often.

detailedReviews 85: content: While the sound is very good, as is the fit, the amount of drop outs that occur is really very bad considering the price I paid for them... £130 odd pounds. Even if I am sat still in my own home listening, drop outs occur if even i move my head a fraction one way or another. Then at another time I can be walking around and everything is fine with my phone in my pocket and then again for no reason it drops out again and then picks up again a little later. Very very annoying. Tried it with my phone in different positions/ pockets etc, and again I get stops in playback. Tried toggling bluetooth on/off, and resetting phone, and downloading the firmware, but to no avail it still lets me down. I thought maybe that the device was at fault, and went back to the shop and exchanged it for another identical pair, but it's just the same. It's such a shame because sometimes it works flawlessly for maybe an hour or two, but then off it goes again. I really like them other than that, and I'm hoping that maybe Sony can fix it with an upgrade. Come on Sony, I expect better from you.

detailedReviews 86: content: I bought these after reading the WhatHiiFi review.
The sound is great for in ears, it’s just all the other issues ruin them.
They would be great for home use only, as noise cancelling is useless. I travel every week using planes, trains an metro, I ear everything. I was told by Sony that these would be effective for numbing down these noises, which they don’t.
Then there is the constant right earbud losing connectivity while walking in a public space. Again Sony said that this is because 2.4g WiFis frequency of stores WiFi and other people’s phones. Hence my reason they should be for indoor use only, as they don’t function outside in the elements.
Then the battery is only 3 hours, which isn’t so bad if you at home and normal commute. But for travel it’s a no go.. It takes 1.5 hour recharge them. FYI Apple EarPods recharge in 15minutes.
Sony did come back to me, and told me they will have connectivity 2.4 G Frequencies of other peoples devices in stores Wi-Fi as well will affect the earbuds connectivity. (Apple EarPods don’t do this btw).
So they are great sounding earbuds, but poor connectivity in public areas.

The problem, and I saw this is a general issue in other reviews as well, the right ear piece kept dropping connection with the left ear piece. This makes for a terrible listening experience. Another issue and again a commen issue on the reviews is the audio delay when watching videos. The call centre attempted to resolve the connection problem, but the problem continued. They also tried to explain that the sound delay issue is inherent with all wireless devices...not true as I owned other brand wireless earphones and they worked with no delays. Earphones should be simple and just work - having to do a song and dance detracts from an enjoyable experience. Very disappointing. Firstly, the audio impresssed me but when I watched a video the delay was so bad, video was unwatchable. I then noticed there was a firmware update so tried this. I tried for 2 days but couldn’t get the update to complete via my iPhone 8. I had to borrow an android phone and the update installed first time. The update corrected the video lag.
I have now been using the earphones for a week and the main issue is the right earpiece. No matter what I’m doing, sitting in the house, going for a walk, sitting in a car the right earpiece drops connectivity. It happens in every situation no matter what settings I have on the app. Sometimes it happens 3 or 4 times in one song, sometimes I get 20 minutes without any loss.
When they work properly, they are great but that isn’t very often. So disappointed.

detailedReviews 93: content: I bought this product 14 days ago.
I was actually considering Blue Tooth "on ear" noise cancelling (NC) alternatives, when the sales person told me that there was "in ear" alternatives. I am happy with my AirPods, but my work location is moving and I will start commuting by bus, train, Metro etc and therefore the NC.
So, I am very happy with the function (NC and very good sound), except that when
receiving phone calls only the left air bud is in "action". This is really disappointing, and it is such a long time since I got used to dual function that it was not in my mind to ask about this before I went out of the shop.... . This is the sole reason for the lack of the 5th star... . I really do hope that an upgrade would change this!
I have not had "connectivity" and stability problems as you can read about from some reviews that I read after my purchase... .
Being used to AirPods the design of the charge box is a little "old" - but it works - and that is the main point.

Also, I'm still learning how to sequence bluetooth on and earbuds in - sometimes I have problems with right bud (no sound). When it works, it's simple and intuitive. Noise cancelling appears to work but does require a good bud fit - this is my first experience of noise cancelling so I can't compare. detailedReviews 95: content: I bought these in ear headphones April 2018 with idea I would use them in the gym. Unfortunately due to a Heart attack I didn’t start using them till September 2018. At first I thought they had good sound but Sony had exaggerated the time you could use them for as I found mine only ran for about 1 and half hours so 3 in total with the case. Today as usual I went to gym and fully depleted the charge, but on return home the left ear piece would not charge at all. After multiple tries I have given up as the left one has had it. Obviously that’s the end of both because you can’t use right without left. Spending £180 on these I feel totally let down as they didn’t even last a year but are now out of guarantee. Not the quality I would expect to get from buying Sony products regularly over the years .

detailedReviews 96: content: Bought these to replace around the neck headphones, however, the battery life is terrible. From full charge I get no more than 2 hours of use before they shut down. They are supposed to charge in the case. I had the case plugged in all day and then unplugged it for the weekend. When I went to use the earbuds on monday, they said my battery was at "medium". The sound quality if pretty good, the noise cancelling is ok but not great. They seal your ear canals pretty well and that blocks more sound than anything. I would definitely not buy these again.

title: Terrible battery life, not impressed
detailedReviews 97: content: Was a bit nervous ordering seconds, but the product I received was excellent. Only issue is there's a slight hissing sound on noise cancelling mode, but it's not noticeable when the audio is on so I don't mind. Sound quality is great, the touch controls were easy to use. Love that it automatically pauses when you take an earbud out, and restarts when you put it back in. The fit is a bit loose though, decent for normal use but I wouldn't recommend it for jogging for fear of them falling out. Comes with 6 extra pairs of foam and silicon tips.

detailedReviews 98: content: I'm a bit disappointed with the battery life. After a full charge the earbuds last about 1 hour of continues use. Upside is the case doubles as a portable charger even when not plugged into the wall outlet. Noise cancellation is mediocre at best. If I use my Parrot Z3 over the ear as a comparison the Sony earbuds fall off the chart. Luckily I only paid $45 dollars instead of $199 for the earbuds.Which is about the right price for the quality. Would I recommend purchasing a set......not at full price. Short battery life is the biggest downside.

title: Mediocre noise cancelling, short battery life
detailedReviews 99: content: They function as headphones but have limited usability in the fact they cut out frequently, they do not fit in the ear as well as they should, the connectivity to Bluetooth is limited in that they sometimes fail to connect or can take a few attempts. The overall experience has not be as good as I had hoped as the battery life is substandard. A critical downfall is the microphone on voice calls where on frequent occasions the outside noise is the focus of the microphone and not the speakers voice, impacting the experience. On occasion I have had to disconnect them and use the handset because the caller was unable to hear me over the outside noise (I.e some say a car driving past sounds like a train and completely drowns out my speech).

detailedReviews 100: content: I wanted these primarily to use for handsfree use on my phone, and secondarily as something to listen to podcasts on. However they are a terrible choice for this. The microphones pick up and amplify background noise, in preference to my voice, and only work in perfectly silent environments. Forget walking on the street or even use in a quiet cafe. Be very clear what you are buying these for!

detailedReviews 101: content: It is worth potential buyers of this product knowing that for hygiene reasons (they are in-ear headphones) the receipt tells you that refunds are not available. It would have been helpful if the store clerk selling me the product had advised me of this at time of purchase.
I have no issue with the design or build quality of these headphones but I have found persistent issues with the quality of blue-tooth connection to my iphone XS (the right ear piece constantly drops signal), even when setting a quality option to "stable connection" - although why I should have to compromise on quality having paid £150 for a pair of headphones is a mystery to me. Suffice to say that had a refund been available I would have returned them within the week.

detailedReviews 102: content: The sound quality is superb but a couple of significant design flaws has resulted in me returning the item. Number 1. Watching video is not a realistic option due to a 1 to 2 second time lag between audio and video. 2. Despite installing the latest firmware I still experienced a number of audio drop outs from the right earpiece.
Although I experimented with numerous earpiece options the earphones never felt particularly secure. This would give me cause for concern if using them whilst exercising.
In summary, close but no cigar. Must try harder.

title: Noisy video, audio drop outs
detailedReviews 103: content: I bought these based on the What Hi-Fi review. I wanted a completey wireless alternative to my Beyerdynamic wired headphones. The sound is great - open but weighty. However, the connectivity is sporadic at best, with the right earpiece disconnecting quite often. The main issue I have is the fact that all video is out of synch. I understand that there might be a bit of latency with Bluetooth, but these render YouTube unwatchable. If I can., I'll ask for an exchange. I've been a customer of Richer Sounds since the mid-90s and I am sure they will see me right.

detailedReviews 104: content: To me this item was a HUGE waste of money, so much so I took it back. I know everyone has different shaped ears but the way they are held in is all well and good until you sweat and then they fall out.

detailedReviews 105: content: A nice looking and well built product perfect for travelling and running although battery life is relatively short (1.5 hrs playing) and apparently 9 hours recharge but not sure about that. Noise cancelling? What noise cancelling. Ambient sound is exactly the same with cancelling switched on or off. Sound quality is superb but the right hand headphone randomly drops connection which can be a bit annoying. If Sony can overcome the hit and miss WiFi connection on the right hand headphone I’d give it 5 stars.

detailedReviews 106: content: Worked fine for a week, then the right earpiece started dropping out frequently but irregularly, making them unlistenable. I'll have to send them back.
The noise cancellation was fairly effective, and the ambient sound pass-through was useful. Both could have been better.
Requiring the Music Center to ensure full volume on Android and having a separate heaphone app working with it is a very clumsy and annoying way to control the earphones.
Overall - happy and satisfied for a week, then very disappointed and annoyed.

detailedReviews 107: content: I bought these to replace some wired Taiotronics noise cancelling (NC) headphones I use in the gym. The Bluetooth connection is excellent and the sound is first class, but the NC could be a lot better. The Taiotronics NC was great, cutting out other music and most voices, however the Sonys still allow noise jn, particularly other music. Great sounding headphones if you can pick them up cheaply, but I'd be disappointed to have paid the RRP for these.

detailedReviews 108: content: I bought this from amazon as wanted to go wireless. Was impressed at first with the ease of connectivity. That was when the realisation hit that they are not up to the job. Walking down the road with one ear cutting in and out is not great. Returned after less than a week. I have the latest phone with latest Bluetooth, I also had is set to connection priority. The performance was bad. Expected more.

detailedReviews 109: content: Bought this product twelve days ago and so far I’m not impressed. Despite upgrading the earphones to the latest version the right earphone drops the sign quite often, despite the proximity of the source.
The upgrade process was a nightmare. Ten times I tried and ten times it failed. Finally after turning off every other Bluetooth device in the house the upgrade worked. Was this process ever tested in a real world environment? I seriously doubt it!

detailedReviews 111: content: Good Points: Charging case a nice idea. Sound quality is superb, good bass and mids.
Improvement Points: Picking up Bluetooth initially when removing phones from case, can be a bit "hit or miss" and when battery levels fall to medium, connection dropout between ears increases considerably. Need to keep case plugged in when not in use to prevent battery draining, no on or off option.

detailedReviews 112: content: I also have the over ear version of these headphones and they are great. These are not. The sound is a similar quality though the noise cancelling is no where near as good but the biggest issues are battery life (from full to empty in 90 minutes) and the almost constant drop out - despite doing the firmware upgrade and selecting the stability program on the app. They literally drop and rejoin about every five minutes on my I phone X. Would not recommend to anyone which is a shame because I love my over ear version.

title: Battery life and drop out issues
detailedReviews 113: content: I bought these from Richer Sounds, updated the firmware. They fit quite well. The box/charger is neat. The sound in one ear cuts out continuously, making them unlistenable to. The 'fix' for this reduces the sound quality to such an extent they're worse than my £20 pair of 'phones. The noise cancelling makes no discernible difference. The battery life is poor.

detailedReviews 114: content: Having used the earbuds now in most environments, gym, walking, running, train, etc. Overall, I would reccommend and would certainly buy again.

detailedReviews 115: content: I bought these to work out with and for travel but have found that the stated 3 house battery life depends on what you are doing with them.

However the issues i face is that the left ear bud cuts in and out, even after a full charge,. appears to easily get interference when in public places, tube st, underground. These are the 1st for me i usually just stick to the factory headset from the phone,.
overall impression is that this tech still needs work.

Hands free isn't great, I speak quite alot on the phone and I'm finding people can't here me very well, even in an quite environment also the conversation only comes through the left bud which is annoying as if your in a noisy place 2 buds would make it better!
Hopefully Sony will correct these issues on the next model.
