I feel that the EQ helps bring some 'presence'/detail I notice around male vocals. Overall, their tonality is just spot on. I tested against my XB500 and the XBs sounded totally wonky tonally compared to the EQd ZX310. As you noted, not terribly detailed, but everything sounds clean and correct., I am a bit late, but I also enjoy listening to music with these headphones. Compared to other headphones and without EQ, I would describe their sound signature as warm, slightly dark and leaning towards what I consider to be neutral (I am a fan of the Harman curve). Especially the present and natural vocals sound great to my ears. In my opinion, only treble (air/extension) could be more present. I like the EQ settings you have mentioned but I don´t mind listening to the ZX310 without EQ. I own more expensive headphones and IEMs but the price of performance ratio of the Sony MDR ZX310 is pretty great. Yeah, it might not be a hifi set that is able to reproduce all the minor details, but overall its timbre is pretty spot on and listening to music with it is fun. Additionally, these headphones are way more comofortable to wear compared to my other on-ear headphones the Sennheiser HD 25 which apply more clamping force to my ears.
