My favorite feature: touching the pad of the headphones to turn on ambient sound so I can hear and speak to someone. The other related feature is that it will pause music and turn on ambient sound when you start talking so you don't have to manually pause and remove your headphones to do so. Audio automatically pauses when you remove the headphones as well.
Other cool features: swipe up and down on the headphone surface to change the volume; swipe forward and back to skip tracks.
None of the above would be worth mentioning if the sound quality was not as good as it is. It's not too boomy - the sound is crisp without being harsh. I grew up listening to high end audio and these headphones deliver.

They sound fantastic, and the sound cancelation is absolutely top notch. You can be sitting right behind the wing, directly behind and aside the engines (the loudest part of the plane due to the travel of sound), and all you'll get is the gentlest hum. When my wife would let me have a turn, it was the biggest and most comforting relief. Cannot recommend these enough for the noise cancelation alone.
As far as sound quality, theyre really outstanding in that regard too. The full audio range is nicely calibrated out of the box. I sometimes even use them for watching and television at home if my wife is sitting next to me and shes talking on the telephone. Excellent sound quality. You get the base is great, the dialog comes clear.
Features are cool. You can connect to 2 things at once, you can turn the noise cancellation on/off, you can have it so that the noise cancellation automatically turns on/off if you start talking. neat stuff.
Easy to pair with devices like most Bluetooth devices. Ive paired with my television, sound system, cell phone, etc. The only thing i couldnt pair it with was my PS5, but thats because the ps5 "doesnt allow for audio bluetooth devices" (per the ps5 notification that pops up.
They seem durable enough, unlike the newer versions. The newer versions of these (the xm5 and xm6) have these little thin hinges atop the earcups, and if you go to the headphones subreddit, youll see constant posts of those snapping. These, on the XM4, are wider, less stylized, and seem more durable.
Very comfortable. I have sensitive ears, in that my ears get really hot and irritated sometimes, so i need to be carful with what i use/wear (and earbuds give me insane ear ache, so i cant wear those). These headphones have never irritated my ears. Theyre very gentle, soft, and breathable. I also have a rather large head, my hat size is between a 7&3/4 (XXL) and 7&5/8 (XL). For reference, the average male head size is 7&3/8 (L), which means my head is roughly a full inch wider then the typical. Now, you might think that an inch isnt that much of a difference, but it is. Point is, these still fit nicely and do not squeeze my XL/XXL head.
As far as why i chose these in particular, i used the review website "RTINGS" to help me narrow it down, and it was a fight between these and the bose quietcomfort. After going to the bestbuy to physically try and listen to both pairs, i liked how these performed just slightly better overall.
In conclusion - great headphones. You wont regret going with these.

Sound quality is great even with a Neutral EQ profile. I prefer having a custom EQ to juice out the best performance out of these. Great app with all the important features. Ambience mode works great, Speak-To-Chat feature works really well when at office / at the gym. Noise cancellation on these are on par with the high end headphones.
I’ve tried them wearing these on a 30 hour long flight journey 3 times. They do not tire your ears, do not feel heavy, ANC blocks majority of the flight engine noise, flight infotainment adapter comes in handy in older planes, battery life lasted the entire 30 hours with ANC On always! It still had 15% charge left.
I have even compared these against its successor XM5. Like majority of the reviews say, XM4 are a great for price headphones, XM5 aren’t much of an upgrade considering it’s $100 more than XM4. Wait for XM6 to upgrade! I also like XM4 foldable design better than XM5.

detailedReviews 7: content: I bought these to replace my early model Bose noise cancelling headphones. Those used a single AAA battery to power the noise cancelling function. As one would expect, the sound quality was excellent with those old wired headphones. But after several years of frequent use, I had worn them out and needed a new pair. This time I wanted headphones with a better microphone than my old Bose model that had a little microphone mounted on the cable. I tried RAZER wired gaming headphones with a detachable microphone, but didn’t like the sound distribution of the speakers (notable lacking in midtones), the microphone’s inconsistent behavior, and the soundcard’s failure to work with my Macbook Pro.
While I was reluctant to go the wireless route - because Bluetooth compresses audio thereby reducing sound quality - I decided to give these a shot because one can mute the audio simply by putting your hand up to the right ear. That is so cool! That single feature held enough "points" in my scoring to give them a try even though they were more expensive than I targeted.
When I tried them out, I was pleasantly surprised to discover they delivered rich sound. And with the phone app, one can adjust the equalizer in them and turn on DSEE Extreme, which is an AI-driven feature that enhances higher tones adversely affected by Bluetooth compression.
Noise cancelling is programmable, too, being easy to turn off and one.
Battery life is good unless you use all of the features; then the battery life diminishes considerably. But I like the features and for now will enjoy them at the cost of frequent charging.
An invisible touch on the exterior of the right earphone controls volumes, helps with making calls, and changes tracks.
One of its voice features makes it easy to place hands-free calls.
Another voice feature pauses audio and turns on ambient noise if you start talking. You can then talk with a person or pet. It automatically starts playing again after several seconds of no talking. How cool is all that?!!
Its built-in pair of microphones for voice pick-up (it has four separate microphones to manage its noise canceling feature) met my goal of delivering my voice consistently to callers. My son reported that voice quality isn’t as good as the RAZER delivered, but the volume appeared fine. If I want good quality audio input, I use a separate USB microphone that is good - even for podcasts. So, I repeat, the microphone, which may be the weakest feature of the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones, meets my expectations. While not perfect, it doesn’t knock my rating to 4 stars.
I didn’t address comfort in this review, but others report that the headband and over-the-ear pads are comfortable. I tried a $1,000 pair of headphones that I found to be more comfortable, but the price ended my interest. These are satisfactory.
The headphones come with a removable cable with 3.5mm jacks at each end. One plugs into the headphones and the other plugs into an audio source. The travel case has an airplane adapter, too, for those airlines that want you to use their jack, not Bluetooth, while flying. When one plugs a jack into the headphones, they automatically turn off. However, one can re-engage active noise canceling by turning the headphones back on while wearing them.
Its durability isn't top of the market, but given all of the other features, I am satisfied. The headphones come with a protective case that I intend to use when traveling. And I will handle the headphones with care.
I value these headphones as worth what I paid, which was less than full retail price because I have a My Best Buy Plus membership. I saved over $100.00.

Battery life seems very good as well, but I like to use the aux cord to plug into my laptop which does not drain the battery life at all.
The headphones and aux cord fit really nicely into the carrying case and it barely takes up any room in my backpack.
Sound quality is good too, but I would recommend downloading the app and adjusting to your liking. I’m a bit hard of hearing so I feel like the volume on these doesn’t go up super high. However, for my needs I don’t need to have anything at full volume anyway.
These seem very durable too, so I have a good feeling they will be a “buy for life” pair of headphones. I’m very satisfied with the quality, especially since I got them on sale for $199.
Overall, these are an extremely well-rounded pair of headphones! I’m very happy with my purchase. I considered the Bose QuietComfort, but these check more boxes for me. Would highly recommend it! :)

And let me say the XM4 certainly lived up to its expectations and at times exceeded it! They sit so comfortably on my head and it doesn’t feel too loose or too tight. The sound quality blew me away I felt very immerse into my listening experience and was able to pick up on a lot small details in songs that I completely missed with earbuds. The battery life is insanely good! Another thing I love about these headphones is that you can customize the sound of it on the Sony Headphones app to whatever liking you choose. It’s a neat detail that really made my listening experience with these headphones just that much better! This is definitely worth the buy! I don’t regret this purchase at all!!

They come with a wire to connect to your headphones and I have used it when I want to watch something on the plane movies' catalog, so I have good sound and noise canceling while watching the plane's movies.
Overall, they simple, nice, lifht weight and deliver great sound, besides come with a case that it's very useful when I'm traveling.

The sound quality otherwise is very good with the bass clear and mids very nice. Possibly it was this set of headphones, not sure. I am returning these.

After I got used to the features that come with the app, and used the headphones themselves, it was clear I'd made a good choice 👌 Listening to music, either on a walk or just to chill, no longer left me with the aching ringing ear, so already exactly the sort of thing I was looking for, but more, the sound quality is superb, genuinely perfect, the noise cancelling is brilliant, enough that the world around you fades away, but not so much you forget what's happening around you, the voice control (can't remember exactly what it's called) that stops the music etc when it detects you/someone else talking works perfectly, and having an on/off option in the app means you can use it for when you really need it, but when you just want to tune the world out & chill you can do that too. They also connect to my smart TV, which for gaming is ideal, and the way the sound transfers from TV/PC speaker to headset is night and day, particularly for "emersion" games. I'm still playing with the equaliser options, but the standard option is perfect all around for what I like, if you know more about how EQ works then me, I'm sure you'll have fun playing with the custom options in the app. Anyway, rant over 😅 these are a brilliant pair of headphones well worth the money for what you get, and knowing its a Sony product gives a guarantee that they'll last a good while, and pay for themselves in the long run. 10/10 would/have recommend/ed.

I could talk about B&W and B&O but I dont think they are better and have their own issues which can be read in many reviews. Also they are double the price. Then there are variations in broadcast material. Buy the XM4 and youll never be disappointed. Try a side by side test and Im sure youll agree. They are truly brilliant and play with the equaliser youll achieve just the sound youre looking for!

detailedReviews 19: content: It was months of contemplating which ANC headphones I should get for my AuDHD (i tend to have sensory issues) and this have helped me greatly in terms of coping with episodes of overstimulation 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 The sound quality is great after tweaking with the EQ on the app and the comfort is just nice too since it's light and the clamp on the head isn't too tight (there is a tendency to sweat easily so I wouldn't recommend long periods of usage as the leather may crack, thus, I bought extra padding to deal with that as seen in the pictures I've provided; also do be mindful that since the clamp is not very tight you shouldn't jump and run with them on as they may be prone to falling off). Personally, the ANC's cabin pressure isn't as overwhelming as the xm5s (though the Bose QC might one up the xm4s on this in terms of comfort ie. barely noticeable white noise). As for battery life, maybe it's because I tend to use it a lot with the ANC on but it's subpar. Though, the xm4s do make up for it by having fast charging (20% -> 100% after 40 mins of charging iirc). The touch controls are an added bonus, too, with how easy it is to use. Also, bluetooth connectivity is splendid and pairs really fast to my devices + the option to use these turned off but wired while maintaining a decent sound is great. This setting is the worst headphones could ever have , it stops the sound on your music fully out of control when you don’t want it stopped at all. I don’t know why this horrid annoying settings could be on any headphones but luckily you can fully stop it because I hate that setting. And one more thing, it is good it comes with wired sound as well because Bluetooth does not work properly on many devices. Bluetooth needs to be improved a lot.

There were items from Sennheiser and Bose among others for consideration and in my mind they were always the top of the tree when considering a purchase however once I started reading reviews from publications like What Hi-Fi and members of the general public on various forums these headphones seemed to be THE ones to go for. I was surprised as I’d never really considered Sony. What a mistake that was.
I’m so glad I did, the sound is incredible, the charge lasts for so much longer than I could ever have imagined and also they’re so easy to operate with just a swipe up/down on the side pad for volume control or back/forward for track advance. I love the fact that if someone attracts my attention and I remove the phones the music stops and when I replace them the music starts again. It’s only a little thing however it makes such a difference to the overall experience.
They come in a lovely case as well which keeps them safe when not in use as well.
In short I love these headphones, I’m no audiophile however I highly recommend them as so many have done before

detailedReviews 26: content: When I first purchased my headphones, I struggled at first to control the volume and backwards and forward direction features, which are the basic expectations around control operability.
I was initially frustrated and considered returning the headphones, but I managed to work out that you simply stroke upwards/downwards for volume control. Stroke up or down and keep your finger pressed to achieve your desired volume. Stroke left or right to skip forward/backward.
The feature where you cover the earpiece with your hand when having a conversation with someone in the room is clever because the music lowers and the headphones allow the outside in.
You can also tap to start and stop your music listening or movie watching. When the headphones detect that they're not on your head, it pauses media content. Clever.
All functionality is on the right-hand side earpiece.
The quality of the material on the earpiece is durable, unlike my old Beats headphones which were poor quality and looked tatty, which is a pity because they sounded good.
Sony has ticked all my expectations when it comes to producing quality headphones which use intelligent technology. Great value for money!

For example, out of the box the headphones will stop playing if you cough or make the slightest sound. They think your trying to start a conversation. I personally find that feature incredibly annoying. There's nothing in the minimalist manual that tells you this will happen and the only way to turn that feature off is to download the app. I did that and a few months later the same thing happened and I had to turn it off again. The right side is also a touch pad that does stuff so you need to learn and try and remember all that. The are other things it will do that may seem odd unless you pour through the app to figure out what is going on. I'd like these headphones a lot more if they just played music and cancelled noise.

I've been after a noise cancelling pair for a long time and did a lot of research and was debating between these Sony ones and the Bose ones. In the end I settled on the Sony ones as I liked the cool features it had, like being able to automatically stop and start playing when the headset is removed and the speak to chat function. I've since turned off that function as I like being able to sing along to my music. I also like that I am able to control the volume and fast forward/rewind tracks without having to do that on my ipod. It's also great that the headphones can be connected to two devices at once.
The noise cancellation and the ambient sound settings are amazing. I also love how clear my music sounds. The headset itself is very comfortable to wear, they cup the ears nicely and I didn't have problem wearing it all day at work.
The case it comes in is very sturdy, yes it's bigger than the Beats one but I like that as I don't face a struggle to put the headphones in the case when I'm done.
The battery life is very good and when charging it it has an light to let you know once it's fully charged. Overall very pleased with my purchase. The delivery itself was excellent too, I ordered this on Tuesday morning and it arrived Wednesday afternoon.

I am a big guy with a large head and big ears and these expand and fit over my ears just fine. The pad material is comfortable for a couple hours at a time like I use them; I don't know how they would feel for working out though. Probably wouldn't try it.
The sound quality is terrific. I use them for video games and to watch shows more than music but they do well regardless of media.
Battery life is solid. I charge them after a few days of use so I haven't really tested how long they last until they die, but I don't think they've ever dropped past 50% so I'm happy.
The touch controls on the side are nice to have and simple enough to learn.
Overall I recommend to anyone looking for a quality pair of headphones built to last.

The cushions around the ears are sooo comfortable and completely cover my ears unlike my previous pair that kind of sat on my ears. There’s a nice cushioned bit under the head strap that makes wearing these headphones a delight. The noise cancelling blew me away. As soon as you put them on, even without playing music the “silence” is deafening. It’s not completely silent there’s still a little noise that comes in but once you start playing your music it’s literally you and your little bubble with no outside sounds or distractions. I took a bus ride with these during school rush hour and was pleased with the silence and music that was in my environment with the headphones on. I had to tweak the equaliser a bit to get it sounding how I wanted and again with nothing but my old headphones to compare against these came up trumps. The sound is crisp and weighty while not being too overbearing. I’m going on a nine hour flight to somewhere sunny on Friday and I can’t wait to have these on to drown out all the unwanted noise. Talking of which they come with a neat little adapter that you can use to plug into the airplane headphones socket. So I can use these to watch movies and enhance my experience rather than having to use those tinny plasticky things they give you on board. There are additional features and functions with ambient sound and talk through etc that I haven’t explored yet but i can truly say this is the best £500 I’ve spent on headphones. £500??? Yes!! Because my wife listened to them and politely instructed me to get her a pair too.

The only thing I find I'm disappointed about is the custom button. I have chosen to set mine as Google assistant but everytime I go to use my headphones the next day and push the custom button, the google assistant doesn't work unless I change to Alexa, or ambient mode and then change it back again to google assistant, almost to wake it up etc, as it seems to not want to work for some odd reason. Not sure if anyone else has had this issue?Apart from that, everything is great. Battery life is amazing, sound is quality and they are the most comfortable set that I have ever owned. I can wear them for two hours plus and I still don't have any pressure points or sore spots. 10 out of 10 there. I also chose the xm4 instead of the xm5 because of the size. The 4 fitted my head alot better and the cans cupped my ears alot more nicely and provided a snug, comfortable fit. I wish I could give this 10 out of 10 but yes, the custom google assistant button is a let down for me. Not sure if I just got a dud but apart from that, they are amazing, Sony has delivered superbly.

All in all, the headphones are a good allrounder which can be much further improved in sound and NC performance by improving the features and EQ sound controls of the Sony headphone app which are now inadequate..

These are still probably one of the best pairs of noise cancelling headphones on the market and, these days, you can often get them on sale for much cheaper than Sony's current generation leader WHXM5s.

The clarity of the bass, mids, and highs makes these the top performing headphones all-around. The XM4s sound great out of the box, and you further enhance your experience with custom EQ. The bass is very punchy for basshead lovers, or if you're like me, you can turn up your mids and highs and hear all the instruments that usually get faded and lost. I have my EQ settings pretty balanced, where my lows and bass sit around a 4, while my mids and highs sit at 8 (10 being the max). These are by far the best sounding headphones I’ve ever heard, and I’ve tried a lot. None of the previous ones can even compare.
The companion app comes with a bunch of settings and features to help enhance the XM4s like adjusting your EQ settings of course. It also provides features such as fit testing for 360 reality audio and ANC/ ambient sound control. One of my favorite features is the Adaptive Sound Control. It’s able to detect where you are, and depending on how you have your settings, it will auto-enable ANC or ambient sound. For example, if I’m at work, the headphones will automatically enable ambient sound so i can still listen to my music while also being aware of the chatter of my coworkers around me. If I’m at home, i can fully immerse myself in my music thanks to my headphones auto-enabling active noise cancelling. Another neat feature i love is the headphones can detect if your’e speaking, and will automatically pause your music and go into ambient sound mode to allow you to converse. Then after you've stopped speaking, it will resume your music in whatever previous mode you had it set to. And of course you can always turn all these features off if you wont be utilizing them.
Overall, I’m really impressed with these headphones. I’m upset i didn't try them out sooner. It’s definitely worth the price. It looks good, travels well, has a ton of features, and most importantly, sounds great!
10/10 for me.

Transparency mode is apparently not as lifelike as Apple’s AirPod products, but that was no big deal for me. I like how you can adjust the transparency levels to your own tastes and environment. The comfort level is great, though people who wear glasses may find themselves making occasional readjustments depending on how long they wear them. These are such a good product that I find myself not caring a bit if other, more expensive headphones sound a bit better or have better NC or better transparency, etc. what these are now is an absolute bargain for those looking for an overall package of good sound, great features and comfort. I may have to get another pair for my wife later this year.

With LDAC on, I am hearing new sounds from songs I've listened to for decades, and the build quality is decent. The ANC turns on completely isolates me from the world, which is great for me as I'm autistic. The biggest issue I have is that there is no way to be able to adjust the ANC mode AND activate a virtual assistant at the same time, along with the fact that the pairing is a little slow when compared to other, cheaper headphones from competitors, but I assume that this is because these headphones only have BT 5. 0 when there were newer version of Bluetooth when these first launched. I also have noticed that audio doesn't always stop playing when I take the headphones off and have them hanging aropund my neck.

detailedReviews 43: content: the headphones are noise cancelling, the sound doesn’t leak -- this was a very big concern of mine. the sound quality is great and they’re very comfortable!! the headphones go around your ears instead of on top of them. they have a 360 sound feature as well. when you take the headphones off it pauses your music and when you put them back on it plays the music again, even if you move one of the headphones to the back of your ear it will still pause and play. they can connect to two devices at once, ex. you can connect them to your computer and phone at the same time, if you’re listening to computer audio, when you turn off the computer or close it and turn on your phone, your phone audio will start playing without you having to reconnect to different devices. they’re foldable and the app gives you access to disable or enable different features, like speak to chat. you can also change the way you listen to your music based on your preferences in the app, like the bass or the sound. they were delivered quickly with nothing wrong with them. I usually listen to music in the car, they’re not so noise canceling to the point where you can’t hear anything, but they make a significant difference. with music on they’re very very noise canceling especially when you’re just sitting listening to music while doing something else. the length is adjustable if you need the headphones to be longer or shorter. Overall these are the best headphones i’ve ever had.

They have been great; the sound quality is awesome, and they have enough features that you will actually use. However, I expected the noise cancelling to be a bit better; it is still very good, better than my AirPods Pro 2, but you can still hear a few things coming in and out whilst using the ANC. The second bad thing is the comfort for long periods. They are built quite well and have some padding at the top that rests on top of your head, but after 30 minutes to an hour I find them giving me a headache, which is not pleasant. Reseating them and moving them around a bit normally fixes this issue for a little while. I still love them and will continue to use them.

detailedReviews 45: content: I still own a pair of Sony's first generation MDR-1000X headphones, which are the great-grandfather of the WH-1000XM4. I loved them and they still sound great, but after 7 years they are scuffed and dirty and the foam is falling apart. I was too cheap to pay full price for the latest generation XM5 headphones, so I decided to replace them with the XM4.
The basic design is the same, with touch-pad controls on the right ear cup. Bluetooth pairing with my phone and television was quick and simple. The sound is good, but not any better than the old MDR-1000X. To my ears the new phones have a slightly better response at the higher frequencies, but the older headphones lend a mellow roundness to the sound that I prefer.
There are several new features that I was excited to try out. First, a software app that allows custom equalizer settings. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. No matter what settings I program, the sound from the headphones does not change at all.
Second, these phones allow use of voice assistants like Google and Alexa. You press the "custom" button on the left ear cup, and speak your command. This seems to work pretty well with Alexa, but the "custom" button is also used to control the noise cancelling modes. If you program it (via the app) to ring for Alexa, you can't control the NC modes any more.
The sound and NC are what I would expect from Sony at this price point. Overall, these are fine phones, but no better than great grandp

The cushioning on the ear piece is lovely and soft too. The case which comes with the earphones is ideal for travelling. I've just returned from a long haul flight and they were an absolute bonus. So easy to access everything in the neat case and lightweight for hand luggage.
I would absolutely recommend these earphones .

Be warned, the warranty does not cover physical damage and, in my experience, they refuse to accept damage is caused by anything other than misuse. The charge to fix is £95. I've read on various forums that this is a very common issue. I'd advise caution before parting with your cash for these.

Overall, I do really like these. They are a tick heavier than the Bose equivalents, but not all that noticeable even with a few hours of wear.
The sound equalizing is really nice, and a big differentiator from Bose. Really strong bass.
It's more noticeable which is L/R compared to the Bose. It's a little thing, and maybe I'm just a moron, but there's a visible difference.
The 3.5mm cord is a lot heftier than what Bose provides. I never broke mine, but I was always worried it would happen.
Great battery life.
A couple negative marks (and why I can't give them 5 stars)...
The "vacuum" created with ANC is a lot more noticeable to me than with my old Bose headset, and I'm not in love with that after using these on a few trips.
Also, I'm not in love with the lack of buttons and dependence on touch "gestures" for controlling volume, skipping, and pausing. I also worry that, over time, there will be visible wear on that headphone (right side). At least for volume, it'd be nice to have more tactile control (see people's complaints about touch screens on cars).
Definitely would recommend these though if they're in budget. All-in-all...great set of headphones.

The touch volume controls are excellent as is the battery life. Previously I have struggled with over the head headphones because of weight but these are very light. I can't really find any fault at all and highly recommend these for anyone who either travels a lot or simple likes great quality audio when listening to music or watching film.

They are very comfortable in padding and light so little fatigue from wearing. They also fold up into a nice compact shape to transit with.
The sound quality is what Sony always focus on in their audio products first with and this is no exception, from low to mid to treble. Accompanied with great adaptive noise cancelling that either adjusts as it adapts to your surroundings or what ever you would like to manually set it to with the accompanied app. Easy to use and manage.
The sound gets even better if you listen with hi-res formatted music and a cable, make sure you still charge the headset so you get the best sound with the headphones on but also a great back up that if the battery runs out you can still continue listening.
They are durable as well since I bought mine for Chrismas in 2019 and today cannot see any durability issue with them whatsoever, just slight cosmetic marks as I have used them almost everyday from unboxing.
If you are looking for noise cancelling headphones at the moment I can literally only recommend these to any other headphones on the market right now. Period. I am an audiophile and listen to music everyday.

Fortunately for me the came on sale with an additional $70 discount as a Best Buy Member coupled to an additional $10 reward to get a set of these for around $130 was a given for the quality of sound that you get on these cans. I did listen to the MX5 and 6 and cannot discern a significant increase in sound quality.
I also own Sennheiser Momentum 3 and Momentum 4 which are great sounding but are substantially heavier than the Sony’s which is great when when I do my yard work. Hopefully I wont run these to the ground as well as they aren’t my exclusive use …… as an addendum they do have better noise cancellation that the Sennheisers should that be your deciding factor.

Even though they were still within the warranty period, apparently it was not valid. I ended up getting a new pair because the cost of repair was more than half of the original value of the headphones. Within a few months, the exact same thing happened with the new pair! Again, even though the 2 year warranty promises that unless it is your fault, repairs are free, I had to pay for the extremely expensive repair. In conclusion, I would advise people to buy a different brand of headphones from somewhere else as these headphones break very easily and the warranty may as well not exist. Hope this helps! :)

I don’t bother with all the smart features like ‘speak to chat’ etc, but it’s all there if you want it via the app!
I was sceptical about buying refurbished but was pleasantly surprised. I bought A grade, and the item and accessories etc were pretty much immaculate, only signs of use were the box was a little scuffed and the earpads had some signs of slight wear. Otherwise perfect.
Only negatives for me so far have been:
1) The battery performance doesn’t seem to be that strong compared to more recent releases from competitors like Sennheiser. I still am getting more than enough battery time for my use case.
2) The ear cups are quite shallow which means it can feel a bit fatiguing after a while (the one area I think the Bose QC45 has the advantage).
Overall I would definitely recommend them if you are interested in strong ANC in an over ear design with lots of features and sound quality I think the average listener will enjoy (and has flexibility of EQ to adjust to subjective tastes).

So they’re good for what I bought them for but musically there are better headphones out. These only sound good because I fixed the EQ; they should have sounded good right out of the box considering the price. For comparison I tried the Bose equivalent of these and could hear EVERYTHING with the noise cancellation on BUT the Bose sound better musically. These, I can not hear the TV while standing right in front of it at a decent volume. I’d catch these on sale, definitely do not pay full price. I might add that the battery life on these is insane. I can go a month or more on a single charge using these 3-4 days a week for 1-2 hours each of those days. When I say insane….I literally forget where I’ve placed my charger because I don’t use it often.

thing that I personally didnt care for was I felt it didnt go loud enough. Even after I messed with the settings on my phone and on the app the volume was not as loud as my powerbeatspro I have. However, my powerbeatspro did not have any of the other wonderful features aside from the app, that these headphones have. As I mentioned these were for my daughter and she doesnt care too much to have music blasting in her ears and loves them the way they are. I will probably keep looking for something more suited for me.

detailedReviews 59: content: I have been using these headphones every day for nearly a year. Considering the price it has been my most regretted purchase by far.
The "high quality" mode gives fairly good sound quality, nothing close to what the price would imply though, and it massively reduces the usable range and is easily interfered with so I only occasionally use it.
The low quality mode has the normal range I would associate with basic modern bluetooth (about 20m line-of-sight with a high quality adapter), the general sound quality is not much lower, but has occasional skips and glitches when listening to quiet music.
The touch interface was simply a mistake, it is one of its biggest drawbacks and buttons would have been much more appropriate.
It is unnecessary, slow to interact with, often fails to register clear inputs, and will be triggered by brushing past things, it is very frustrating.
The auto-pause function (when you take them off) is pretty inconsistent, the sensor doesn't always trigger, and it can get out of sync so that taking them off will actually start playing something.
This feature works often enough to be usable and I like that it exists, it's just a bit shoddy.
They cannot be used while charging, they just turn off. The battery will last for 1 day when fully charged, so make sure it is fully topped up overnight.
Not sure if it is just my computer but when I turn my computer off these stop charging from it, everything else I have will still charge from it.
The noise cancelling is fairly good, it is not suitable for industrial environments (seems to make certain high pitched sounds louder), but it certainly helps for most city sounds or road noise.
I leave it off most of the time unless my environment is pretty loud since I don't like fully blocking sound around me, but it's ok.
The "voice pass" noise cancelling mode isn't great, some voice gets through, but all outside sound except very low pitched ones are amplified and tends to drone out both the headphone sound and anybody talking to you.
It appears there would not be any way to repair these, they are entirely made of glued together plastic, including the hinge components which seem weak so I am often worried about breaking them.
Overall I would have paid around $100 for these, I have used much higher quality headphones (both in sound quality and material construction) that are much cheaper than these.

For me the headphones are very comfortable, from the headband to the ear cups, I can wear them all day quite happily.
The buttons/ controls are easy yo use.
The sound is very good. I've only ever had more budget friendly headphones so, for me the sound quality was immediately impressive and the fact thst you can tweak the output with the equaliser is even better as something you don't tend to get with budget headphones.
The noise cancelling is a little strange and takes some getting used to but it is also effective.
The headphones connect very quickly to both my phone and my tablet , and they stay connected, I've not experienced any drop outs so far even when I walk away from my phone in to another room.
The case they come with is good quality and colour matched too.
Things I don't like about the headphones....
They are very plasticky, I know that's not a word but I don't know how else to describe the materials/build of them and for the price its not good.
The headphones creak and make noise when you adjust them or move them on your head which is noticeable even with the noise cancelling which my budget pair didn't do so, that is disappointing.
They feel a bit flimsy, not yhat I would but, I wouldn't want to chuck them around because I don't think they would survive very long.
The battery life is no where near what Sony claims it should be. I've had my XM4's a month now and it's been one of the stand out things I've noticed is that I'm lucky to get a day's life out them. Again no big deal to me as I didn't want them for day after day continuous listening but it was noticeable.
Overall, in my honest opinion these are good headphones for the price that I paid for them, but for the full asking price I would be pretty disappointed with the build quality and materials.

The ANC was very effective at cancelling background noise, and did very well at greatly reducing the volume of loud or consistent noises around me to the extent that I often didn't notice even rather loud noises. The sound quality is good and consistent (although I would recommend reducing the bass level by a few decibels in the equalizer settings if you want correct sound).
However, I have some crucial complaints that hold back the headphones from a full 5 stars:
- The headphones are not very secure on my head and often move around and fall off during any kind of movement other than passive sitting, and this is true at any of the variable length adjustments. As a result, this makes wearing the headphones more tedious and uncomfortable. This was not an issue with the WH-CH700N. DO NOT buy these headphones if you plan to do any more movement while wearing them other than passive sitting or slow walking.
- The right-pad controls are absolutely awful and rarely pick up on my tapping motion to pause/unpause whatever's playing, to the extent that my headphones seem faulty. The controls do not work if you are not wearing the headphones, and so if audio is playing while you aren't wearing them, you cannot pause it. I would have vastly preferred having an assigned physical button instead. Also, it frequently occurs that my hand brushes the right pad slightly and causes "speak-to-chat" to enable which I frustratingly have to then disable.
Overall, the headphones excel at ANC and audio, but have poor fit and awful controls.

I couldn't wear them for too long because a point on my head would start hurting - and the bass was lacking for sure, and I mean like there was bass, but it felt pretty shallow (kind of defeating the purpose as to why I purchased them over the XM4). I bought the XM4 and to be honest I like them way more. It folds so the headphones and case are more compact for travel, and the top part of the headphones are padded, meaning that I can wear them for long periods of time, WITHOUT THEM HURTING. Once I EQed the headphones, honestly they are set - they are my companion everywhere I go. As someone that owned them both at one point I can definitely say that the sound on the XM5 is EVER, and I mean like a TINY bit more clear, and better, however - I felt like the significant lack in the bass wasn't something that I preferred at all so I stuck with the XM4. IF YOU HAVE A SMALL HEAD - just go with the XM4s, they're more likely to fit on your head without falling unlike the XM5s. I haven't worked out in these - nor do I intend to so idk abt how they withstand a good workout. But I'm pretty sure they are not designed for that anyway. I liked that the XM4 earcups are softer, so the slightly less clamping force is something I preferred, especially with ANC on because I feel like XM5s with the clamping force and ANC would give me a massive headache. The only real downside to the XM4 is the call quality, and difference in battery life. Call quality is legible but the ones on the XM5 are just much clearer (i.e. someone calls you and they try hear you), Battery: honestly I'm speaking as someone who used the XM5s. Battery life of XM4s is overall is pretty good, just not as much as XM5 that's really it. Honestly I think these are solid all rounder headphones :)

Let's talk about "Speak to Chat". This setting detects when you're speaking, and turns off the device.
Say you're wearing these in a work meeting and they're connected to your laptop - a reasonable scenario, right? They have a built in microphone after all. But when you go to speak or give a presentation, the device just shuts off.
You need to go into the app on your phone to turn off the "Speak to Chat" feature that just suddenly broke your audio, only you can't just disable it, you have to first disconnect the headphones from your laptop, then connect to the phone so that the app can adjust the setting. Then after it's turned off, you need to reconnect to your laptop to continue your meeting. Good luck troubleshooting this on the fly.
But you turn it off once, and never have to worry about it again, right? Wrong, "Speak to Chat" resets and defaults to "active" with each software update. This means at any time wearing these headphones you could speak and if there's been a software update, your headphones will just shut off.
Touching and holding fingers to the right earpiece for 3 seconds, will enable/disable "Speak to Chat" feature, which I had to go to reddit to learn. A handy tip for disabling it quickly, but also a trap for accidentally enabling it.
Everyone wants a wire they can just cut to kill this permanently, it is so incredibly annoying.
And that is just one of the many absolutely terrible "smart" features that are totally unavoidable with these headphones.
You need the app to operate these. The "Pause when headphones are removed" and "Automatic Power Off" features never work, so almost every time I pick these headphones up to use them, they're dead and need recharging because they've just been sitting on doing nothing since I last took them off. Can you use them while they charge? Nope!
Lesson learned: the next headphones I buy will never use the word "smart" in any description, and they almost certainly will not be Sony. They are decent sound quality, so when they work, they're good.

Unfortunately the noise cancellation on my 2 year old AirPod pros is far better than these (and even then the airpods are worse than they were 2 years ago!), so I don’t think I will use these for that. For example on a train with people chatting behind me their voices are hardly cancelled out whereas airpods manage this fine.
As for sound quality, provided I’m in a quiet environment then this is good - although airpods are also good. These have more bass and more clarity which is nice, and it’s nice not to have something in my ear all the time.
For comfort and fit, they’re obviously a bit sweaty and inconvenient over in ears, and I also have glasses so they have that frame to go over (but that seems fine). I have a large head too and they’re fine with that.
I use these mostly now for focus-time when working in afternoons and to play music. They won’t dethrone my AirPods for travelling, or everyday life, or for being in a noisy environment, and I’m not sure I’ll use them enough to justify the price hence am considering the return… but they are good headphones.
If I really hated in ears then these are good and I’d use a lot, so would recommend if you want to avoid that but generally I was surprised by how they didn’t stack up to in ears (which I guess explains the take off of AirPods and the like!).

There is so the common issue that I’m aware some others face with certain sony headphones of not being heard over the phone, facetime or voice notes when connected. I also deal with various random and unprovoked beeps and activations during listening even when these customisation are mostly switched off. The sound quality is good and the noise cancellation with the options of ambiance is a plus but All in all it hasn’t yet proved to be worth the amount of money paid, My £30 JBL headphones were a lot less of a hassle, lasted longer battery wise and worked efficiently as a headphones. It appears as though al these extra features have been ooorlt designed do don’t seem to work as effectively as they are supposed to such as the random paused of music even when the headphones are properly placed over the ears. It’s also very difficult to get ahold of anyone customer service wise which is unfortunate. Hopefully in the coming days the issues i’m facing can be addressed.

They still work just as well as they did on the day that I bought them, with even the battery lasting most of what it did too (somewhere in the neighbourhood of maybe an hour less than when I bought them). The included 3.5mm cable is surprisingly useful too. I have tried the XM5's and have not been compelled to upgrade as these are plenty good enough for me, and the newer model doesn't fold down like these do which is unfortunate. Very impressed by the value of these Sony's and would definitely recommend when on sale.
Only cons are the noise cancelling is pretty average by today's standards, but still decent. When compared to my AirPods Pro (2nd gen), it's definitely noticeably worse (though they are a newer product), but it does a good job overall, just it is not great at blocking out sounds that aren't just in the background. Perfect for studying and working at a desk though, and the sound quality remains excellent for Bluetooth headphones.
Longer battery life would've also been a nice thing, as I have to charge them every 2-3 days, but it's still plenty good enough and charges quickly anyway, so not a deal-breaker imo.
It is also worth noting that the pass-through feature (transparency mode) and speak-to-chat is horrible and isn't usable imo, as the tech is miles behind Apple and feels janky in comparison, though these aren't the main features of these headphones so, again, it's fine.

For starters, these have to be some of the most comfortable over-ear headphones I've ever worn. It doesn't even feel like I have headphones on! They also don't heat up on my ears like my JBL 670NC's.
As far as audio quality, having the Sony Sound Connect app is an absolute dream come true as it lets me get into the weeds with custom EQ settings tailored to whatever I'm listening to. I can't tell you how many times I've heard the Lord of the Rings prologue from Fellowship of the Ring (seen the movies at least a dozen times) ... but when I listened through these headphones I was hearing intricacies in the score I've never heard before which made me appreciate Howard Shore even more. Same experience when I put on a friend's album where he uses a felt piano ... I thought something was banging around in my office because I could hear every pedal depression and wood click on the recording with these incredible headphones.
The one thing I wouldn't do is take these out on a run ... because the noise cancelling is so good, it would be hard to hear ambient noise. I know the Sony app has a way to deal with that, but honestly get a good set of earbuds for exercising. Save these headphones for when you can 100% focus on the music you're listening to.

I took them home, charged them up and paired them with my Samsung TV, which will be 90% of its usuage. They cancelled out the noise and sounded great! For about 10 minutes. Then they started skipping, then went into full "Warble" mode(Some describe it as "underwater". I screwed around with the equalizer and DSEE funtion, along with Stable Connection setting. I zeroed it down to turning the DSEE Extreme on and off along with the equalizer setting(Which it warns not to use with Equalizer setting or sound could be didtorted). Finally, with equalizer totally in Off position(Through App on Phone), i was able to make them work between togling DSEE Extreme on and off ever 6-13 minutes. From the best I can understand, It has something to do with the bluetooth codec Sony uses and refuses to add any others, like the one that works with most Samsung TVs. For some reason it switches from the one that does work, to the one that doesnt , after a few minutes. This is obviously not going to work; nevermind getting the full features I paid extra for and cannot use. I then went on the internet and this has been a known issue with these headsets since they were released 4 or 5 years ago, after the 3. Sony totally ignores it and wont do anything about it. Not only that, but I am reading the newly released 5's also have the same problem. Way to go Sony for the most popular TV brand in the world...

Sony apparently doesn't cover physical damage in its warranty (I don't mean "accidental damage"). Given that the plastic rotator in one headset just gave up one day, which caused the headset in that side to detach, since I guess it wasn't as snug anymore. I headed down over to Sony Support. I never threw dropped or dropkicked the thing so I figured I could AMA for a defect because it doesn't make sense that an expensive headset would just combust with normal handling after only 12 months.
Nope. Good luck. US warranty law is so lax that they do the bare minimum, and as a result, I guess it makes sense to make products that have a chance to last barely more than or about.
A 350$ (400$ after tax) headset. And it doesn't even come with basic physical support. Especially on the area of the headset that probably receives the most stretch and pull given the small size and thinness of that internal part. This is probably one of the most common breaking points for any type of headset. For a year? I'd expect this quality out of a 30$-50$ headset.
LucidSound offered to repair my headset ($200) that I purchased way after the basic warranty, when I owned one of their headsets. So long as it wasn't accident damage and was just a product issue, I sent a couple of photos to verify it wasn't anything accidental, got on the phone, and had my problems solved in hours-- if even.
A 400 dollar headset should last more than a year (YEARS). And for those who are outliers and don't because manufacturing means there's always some % of defective products that aren't up to standard-- they should be covered because that's not the norm and not on the user.

I knew Sony was a good brand and looked at a couple reviews for these headphones and got them. The noise cancelling is good especially if you are playing busy music. Being in a room with a lot of noise though I can still hear the TV and talking in the distance and have to have the music I little louder than I would prefer. But it isn't much of a problem. Don't let that little comment deter you from getting these. Comfort- wise I can wear these for hours and they will not hurt my ears. Whether I'm on a long plane ride or watching a movie they work great. They sit comfortably lying or sitting. As for exercise I have not tested these running because I personally feel unsafe with headphones while running outside. But for jump roping which includes a lot of up and down movements they work great. I do have to adjust them a couple of times and sometimes if I'm going really fast but they overall stay in place. It's really nice because I can have surround sound and zone out doing my workout and not have to worry about them falling off. The battery life is also great I use them almost every day and charge them like literally every 2 weeks. I also love the case it comes in I bring them to the library with me for homework and studying. I highly recommend these headphones for exercise, school, etc.

Then, not even two months from purchasing them after using them only a handful of times, the metal frame inside the headband bent. I take incredible care of everything I own, and this was at no fault of my own, and happened from simply placing and removing the headphones from my head- only the literal purpose of them. I immediately contacted Sony (who make it almost impossible to find a phone number on their site- first red flag), who said they don’t do exchanges and I’d have to post them off to a repair centre- the closest being over 100 miles away.
I was frustrated but I didn’t have a choice, so I sent them off and the CX team assured me that the repair would be free if the damage was at no fault of my own. A week later I get a bill for £95.
I then spent countless hours calling and emailing Sony incredibly upset due to being charged £95 for something I didn’t do, after spending a fortune on them already and having literally only just got them.
Long story short they couldn’t care less. I’ve never met a company so unwilling to help and so unbelievably heartless. Instead, I’m having to have my headphones sent back to me unrepaired because I cannot afford the £95, and the most help I got was them wavering the refusal fee. Yes, they also charge you to not repair them.
Sony is a despicable company, with the worst quality and service I have ever experienced. I will never, EVER, buy from the money-grabbing scammers ever again.

I'm by no means a sound critic but these headphones have great sound quality.
App to control the headphones is easy to use, you can tweak bass, treble etc in here very easily.
Helpfully has voice control for sound if touch pad isn't to your suiting.

I got the midnight blue colour which is a nice change from boring black.
Best of all they are comfy to wear for long periods of time. I mostly wear them whilst I'm working, they have good noise cancelling and don't press on your ears too hard.
Cons
They do slide and move about if you are moving around especially tilting back or forwards.
The touch pad to skip songs and raise volume is too sensitive and I always get the swiping wrong, I find it much easier to use voice control button or my phone. Not enough to put me off buying these again as I've found a way around it.
The speak to chat function is a bit temperamental, sometimes it'll stop if people are speaking to me but othertimes it may struggle to pick them up unless they are right next to me. I prefer to leave this function off.
Overall they are great headphones, I mostly use these for whilst I work so I prefer the slightly looser fit as it doesnt hurt my ears if wearing for long periods of time. I'd recommend these headphones.

Firstly the f**** voice control activates on its own despite me turning it off. And it's SO annoying. You cough and the music stops. Happens all the time. I switch it off in the control panel of the intrusive Sony App and it still comes back on. This is so annoying, specially during a workout.
I returned them for this reason twice, every time waiting two weeks with digitec refusing a refund.
The whole touch control is stupid and way too sensitive. I much prefer the physical buttons of the quite comfort.
Furthermore, charging is very fussy. It often does not charge, depending on the cable I use (even though they are all original xiaomi cables that I use that fast charge my phone fine).
I never had these issue with any other headphones, just these.
I've been reliably told that the sound quality during a call is abysmal but this is true of other headphones too.
In the end, I never use these headphone, preferring the quiet comfort instead.
They do have good noise cancelling but at the third time you disable the voice control and it re-enables itself, you just want to throw them out the window. Only the high price which stops me doing so. 2/5

Product capture at its best. Battery life is good enough for my needs, I'm using a poweramp 90% of the time. I don't believe I'm getting the stated charged play time. When I use the noise cancelling. The Bluetooth volume, /track controls are useless do the opposite of what you attempt. The exception hear is the NC off mode, it works great when you palm the right speaker. For 350, they're a bit overpriced for the inconviences. But they do sound good. My sony 90s hifi is still better..

These headphones have been terrible, and are only getting worse as time goes on. I've had these only for 4 months. Issues started showing up at the 2 month mark, and have gotten really bad within the last few weeks.
The sound quality is fantastic though, no complaints there. But what's wrong, is the blue tooth connection, it's very shaky, constantly disconnects, constantly starts stuttering etc when sitting at my desk in the office. Even when it changes songs, it sometimes goes into what I'd call 'stutter mode' where I have to disconnect and reconnect the blue tooth every time.
It's pretty ridiculous, but I've had moments where I've disconnected and reconnected it like 3 times within 10 minutes because of stuttering...
My recommendation is to get a Sennheiser headset instead, my last pair from them lasted 3 years. My advice to pbtech is to never sell these headphones again. I trust pbtech is a retail shop, and enjoy every other product I've purchased from here.

I just like my headphones to have slightly more volume than I need while staying distortion free. Otherwise, great headphones, especially if you get them on a good sale. I purchased my WH-1000XM4 having read numerous reviews on how good the WH-1000XM4 are. Undeniably the sound quality and noise cancellation are superb. I mainly use the headphones in the office, commuting and on long haul travel, the WH-1000XM4 were ideal for this. So why the one-star review when other reviews rave about these headphones, and they win so many awards? Simple, they don't last. All the reviews and comparisons are with new headphones. After about a year and a half (outside the warranty period) the headphones developed a fault, they wouldn't reliably charge, the battery level would get stuck at 10% and when plugged in to charge the charging wouldn't activate. After a few months of struggling with this I decided to get them repaired at Sony. Having sent them in I was informed that the part required to correct this problem wasn't available, however, I could purchase a replacement pair at a discount, which I did. I have since discovered that the charging issue is a common problem, a quick internet search for "Sony WH-1000MX4 Not Charging" will bring up numerous blogs and articles describing exactly the same issue, generally after about 15 to 18 months, there are various button pressing resets that are suggested and these work for a while. But this is a fundamental flaw. For a "premium" product the components are just not adequate, and Sony does not appear to be able to source replacements. I would strongly urge anyone considering purchasing these to research how many of the glowing reviewers are still happy with the WH-1000XM4 after 18 months.
If the discounted replacement pair worked, I wouldn't have written this review either but sadly after six months and very little use, this pair stopped working. Having been informed by Sony Customer Support that the replacement pair came with a 12-month warranty I wasn't too concerned. However, the Sony Customer Support have been nothing short of utterly woeful in resolving this. I have never had such a poor response from a major brand. I've purchased numerous Sony products over the past 30 years, from Walkmans, TVs, stereos and probably every model of Playstation and I have never once needed to contact customer support. After my recent experience with Sony Customer Support, the WH-1000XM4 will be my last purchase from Sony.

To get the best possible sound quality you'll have to tinker with the EQ a lot though, or better yet, if you are a PC user like me, leave the app EQ alone, download Equalizer APO and google Amir's Headphone PEQ Filters to find a near perfect preset for these headphones. When properly calibrated the sound quality is truly excellent, but out of the box it is nothing to write home about. While these headphones also work in wired mode without being powered on, they sound positively awful this way. Luckily the battery lasts a good 20+ hours between recharges, so this is not something you'll ever have to endure. All in all these get a highly recommended from me, but if you're in the market for audiophile/gaming headphones and you don't need ANC, there are better options in the same price range.

detailedReviews 81: content: if you’re on the fence about buying the sony wh-1000xm4s, do it!! i got them for my birthday a week ago after having them on my wishlist for almost 3 years now. the countless reviews and ratings i’ve looked at to make the decision really helped to influence me, so i hope this does the same for you. they are incredibly comfortable, don’t give me headaches with the nc on which i have experienced with bose and other brands, they’re extremely stylish - i got mine in black, and are compact as they fold into a case for convenience. as a somewhat audiophile who loves music with heavy bass but also satisfying vocals, and everything in between - the sound quality is unlike any product i’ve tried. everything is crystal clear, and the best part? using the sony headphones app, you can change the eq settings to something that sounds better to you, by either their default eq options or customisable settings. in the app, you can either change the settings on your own or an advanced technology picks the settings that you believe sound the best. that’s what i did and my music sounds incredible. honestly they are great and i’ve been recommending them to everyone i know!!the only downsides to this product for me personally are that i feel like they’re a little big for my head - while they do fit and are comfortable, i wish they were just a tiny bit tighter? i also don’t believe they completely block out all sound - i was on the bus and could still hear the engine sounds. i don’t know if i’ve messed around with the settings enough or if there’s something different i’m doing, but if that bothers you then look deeper into that because i don’t have too much of a problem with it. also, i feel like i have oily fingers or something because whenever i touch the sides of the headphones it leaves these oily marks - i guess that’s my fault for picking the black but it wipes off easily. otherwise, this product is literal perfection. do yourself a favour and invest in these for the long run - it’ll be worth it!!

detailedReviews 82: content: I purchased the latest Bose QC recently and had to return them, they felt a little cheaply built and more importantly the noise cancelling was poorly implemented. The Bose Ultra were very good but with a large price tag to go with it, so I decided instead to go with the Sony XM4 as they are currently a relative bargain price wise, vs their launch price, they always get great reviews and I personally feel they are better built than the newer Sony XM5.
On opening the packaging I was impressed by the quality, including the supplied case and accessories, with everything being beautifully built and the materials soft, tactile and comfortable. I went with midnight blue as a change from the ubiquitous black headphone and was not disappointed. The Sony app is good, particularly with auto EQ selection to tailor sound to my taste. The noise cancellation is exceptional and the music playback is above average for a closed back with noise cancellation. It is a little bass heavy but that tends to be true of all good noise cancellers in my experience. Previously I've had sennheiser momentum 2 wireless and they probably have a better balance with respect of music reproduction but at the sacrifice of good noise cancellation, so there is always a compromise to be made. I haven't tested the microphone but I won't use it often so I'm not best placed to review it.
To summarise, they're well built, comfortable, sound good, with exceptional noise cancellation. Nothing to dislike at the current price of under £200.

I returned them fo4 the Beats Studio Pro to see if they lived up to the hype seeing several people wearing them at the gym, they were trash. The Beats sounded flat, no EQ on the android app. So i decided to spend the extra money on the Sony 4s, and i havent regretted it. I listen to all different types of Reggae, Hip Hop, R&B and these sound great compared to the rest. I almost got the JBL headphones in the same price range. But the noose cancellation is definitely a game changer. FYI most the over ear headphones are not sweat resistant. I went on Amazon and got the sweat resistant ear covers for $15, because i primarily use the headphones at the gym and i sweat alot.

You can only connect two devices at once, which is also bad because it will switch between other devices with no choice to choose which one you want. When it does connect your computer, which is rare, you may get the worst audio quality ever if it uses the wrong driver. So it is luck. And you cannot use anything in the app because it is terrible.

5. the auto detection feature is useful particularly auto switch off when removed from head. (can be assigned in app)
6.Very good ANC. I'm still playing around with the variants on this in the app so might be even better when I've learned more.
CONS:
1. Not the smallest of fold up for the carry case but it is robust and probably good for long journeys. Works for me..just.

I have a big head. The SONY WH1000XM4 fit great. When I am working at a desk or moving around at work, they fit comfortably and snug enough to make sure they aren't falling off. However, I don't know if these would be great for more strenuous activity--I can't see myself going for a run or doing a workout with these. I've used Audio Technica and Beats in the past. The Audio Technicas fit well and were comfortable, but the padding wore out fairly quickly. The Beats were free from a work event. I don't think I'd ever find myself buying them. They never fit
Noise Cancelling: The noise cancelling is a great feature for study, work, or meditation. I am unsure if I've used the ambient sound settings; generally when I'm using these, I'm in a space where ambient sounds are pretty calm [libraries, coffee shops].

They seem to hold a charge fairly well when not in use. I think there's been one day so far that I've killed them during use--but I'm sure they weren't at a full charge when I started using them.

I find the swipe features [volume, skip, etc] difficult to use. Sometimes if I move my head enough I'll pause or skip songs inadvertently. Not a huge deal because I'm generally listening from my phone. Easy enough to manage things through that.
It took me a minute to figure out charging as well. I generally charge these off of my laptop. Has to be open, on, and plugged in. If my computer goes into sleep mode, charging stops. This could entirely be an operator error. I haven't looked into it as it hasn't been to much of a damper on my use.
Connectivity was problematic at first, too. I was using an iPhone 10 when I first got these. After downloading [at the time] SONY Connect, I struggled to get the headphones and my phone to connect. Took about thirty minutes and a handful of tries. I've since upgraded to a newer iPhone and downloaded the new app [Sound Connect, available through the App store on iPhone]. I haven't had any issues with connectivity since the updates.

The pros:
- Very comfortable, even for a really large head.
- The active noise cancelling works well.
- The battery holds a charge for days of use, and the battery report button is fairly accurate.
The cons:
- Over-engineered with tons of pointless features which actively make my headphone wearing experience worse:
(a) The voice passthrough doesn't work properly (sometimes makes the sound cut out randomly) – so I have to disable it;
(b) The setting to turn the headphones off when not in use doesn't work properly (sometimes the wearing sensor doesn't work, so sound stops when they're worn or continues while they're not) – so I have to disable it;
(c) The touch settings don't work properly (they occasionally get a ghost input) – so I have to disable them to the limited extent that the software allows;
(d) Every time the headphone software updates, it turns all those 'features' back on without warning you! Then to fix the problem, you need a phone app to get into the options - there's no desktop software and few button-controlled settings.
- The absolutely crucial part (the Bluetooth pairing) is erratic. When you are near the edge of its range it doesn't just cut out; instead, half the time it silently unpairs and you have to restart the connection to make the headphones work again! Settings like 'Priority on Stable Connection' don't fix this.
- The charging cord in the box is pathetically short (16 cm).
- Very expensive for a pair of headphones. Instead of putting in all the features that don't work they should have worked on the Bluetooth connectivity. That or left it bare-bones and saved the customer a bunch of money. As well as the worthless features already mentioned, they could have cut the voice assistant, the '360 Reality Audio sound setup', the fancy travel case, the 'Adaptive Sound Control', and the gameified software.
Not recommended.

The noise cancelling is very good, they're comfortable and the build quality is excellent. I bought A-grade from CeX and they arrived in great condition, close to new, so I'm happy in that sense.
I am keeping them but I was hoping they would be great "do-it-all" headphones (especially as they weren't cheap), so I will be looking to buy a different set for music listening and then using these for podcasts or when I need noise cancelling.

Now, the bad: these are absolutely the most overly-complicated bit of tech I've ever owned with massive compatibility issues with Bluetooth and seemingly its own software. I have to factory reset these several times a week just to reconnect to my phone or PC. I even had to rewire my PC's Bluetooth adapter just to use it with it. Sony also has no support for rolling back firmware - which I've seen requested by a lot of people online to solve problems such as the poor battery life. When not crashing from unexpected Bluetooth codecs, they're crashing due to dust on the sensor, or very mild amounts of water (like mist).
The sound quality is decent, but I've bought much cheaper wired headphones that sound miles better - some even in the $100 range.

I've had these for over a year and I have never been more disappointed in such an expensive purchase. 6 months in, the headphones glitch out and there's a loud whistling noise that pierces your ear drums if you put them down and come back in 2 minutes. Powering on/off does not fix it, it just goes away after a few hours. So don't take them off without powering them off first or you will lose some of your hearing (this is the only method I found that works). If you want to use this for gaming with voice, good luck. It prioritizes the voice chat and makes the game or any other background sound (YouTube, music, whatever) absolute trash (I'm talking unbearable 90's foam headphones you get on an airplane in a plastic bag quality). I have cheap $10 amazon wireless earbuds that beat this for that purpose. Do not buy these, you will love them at first and fall in love with the noise cancelling and all the "cool features" and think they're amazing only to feel swindled after a couple of months. And good luck contacting Sony support, they will give you an FAQ link and tell you to suck it up. Also, if you don't believe me, look up the issues with these on Reddit or any forum and you will discover an ocean of tears. I'm only keeping/using them because of the price I paid and I cannot force my hand to throw them in the garbage bin where they belong.

No audio via USB-C, touch pad is one sided and nowhere near as convenient as physical buttons for volume. One would expect Dolby Atmos from these yet it's absent, sound is not as "3D"/surrounding as competition. Though one thing to appreciate still is the fairly neutral profile. Base Airpods have better sound than these, and these are 40mm drivers. Personally fits well, colleagues that recommended this also say the same, out head size ranges from large to small. The second bad thing is the comfort for long periods. They are built quite well and have some padding at the top that rests on top of your head, but after 30 minutes to an hour I find them giving me a headache, which is not pleasant. Reseating them and moving them around a bit normally fixes this issue for a little while. I still love them and will continue to use them.

The leather (or presumably leather) padding along the headband and earmuffs has onky just now started ti wrinkle, and it may not have even started to had I taken the time to care for them properly. A single charge still gives me a weeks worth of charge (spread out). I'm gonna buy the same pair again once these fullt die out. Though, I'm not sure they ever will!! I love these so much!

I'm concerned the re chargeable battery is sealed inside the unit and does not appear "easy" to swap out. Indeed, this really is something I should have though more about before making my purchase because I bought these 'phones because my Bose "on ear" bluetooth 'phones failed (after 8 years) and it's proven impossible to change the battery (they still work fine when wired so I will be keeping them). Had I been alert enough to spot this beforehand I would not have bought these hadphones full stop. That said, I got them via Amazon Warehouse so about £50 less than "new" so can't complain too much. To me they sound reasonable but I have compromised in the sense the need for new arose at a bad time. When I tell you my AV sound kit is about £10K's worth you'll perhaps understand that £180 on a pair of headphones is skimping a little. I wouldn't say don't buy these, (except pehaps for the batter issue) but I wouldn't say buy them either whereas I would say don't buy "Beats" or any other gimmicky, payong for the label brand.

Even though they were still within the warranty period, apparently it was not valid. Again, even though the 2 year warranty promises that unless it is your fault, repairs are free, I had to pay for the extremely expensive repair. I don’t bother with all the smart features like ‘speak to chat’ etc, but it’s all there if you want it via the app!
I was sceptical about buying refurbished but was pleasantly surprised. I bought A grade, and the item and accessories etc were pretty much immaculate, only signs of use were the box was a little scuffed and the earpads had some signs of slight wear. Otherwise perfect.
Only negatives for me so far have been:
1) The battery performance doesn’t seem to be that strong compared to more recent releases from competitors like Sennheiser. I still am getting more than enough battery time for my use case.
2) The ear cups are quite shallow which means it can feel a bit fatiguing after a while (the one area I think the Bose QC45 has the advantage).
Overall I would definitely recommend them if you are interested in strong ANC in an over ear design with lots of features and sound quality I think the average listener will enjoy (and has flexibility of EQ to adjust to subjective tastes).

detailedReviews 101: content: I really wanted to give the headphones a higher rating as they are solid for when they were made. The sound quality is great, deep base with very clear vocals, and the ability to customize the equalizer to your liking is fantastic. What's not fantastic is the Tactile sensors, the microphone, and pressure build up from the noise cancelling.
The sensors do not respond very well, often skipping what I was listening to and causing me to have to take my phone out and go back; defeats the purpose of the feature. The internal sensor works great but with the wonky touch sensors it ends up playing the sound or skipping the song/episode.
The Microphone is horrible. It picks up all of the background noise and not your voice. The voice through feature seamed cool at the beginning but it became very annoying. Anything triggers it, a random sounds, other voices, loud noises, coughing, etc. It makes the experience unenjoyable.
Lastly, the pressure. My god, it can be so intense sometimes. You feel it pushing into your head. The pressure can cause some headaches and sometimes a little disorientation, nausea, dizziness/motion sickness. Makes relaxing a bit difficult.

I had to turn the panel off, which is a good feature but absolutely sucks if you’re working out. They’re comfortable but if you wear glasses they’re terrible; I’m sure most over ear headphones suck for glasses users. The noise-cancellation isn’t bad but it’s not as good as my AirPod pros…the little white earbuds. I chose these over Bose because they sounded better in my opinion. I’ve worn them on the plane and they were better than my AirPod pros for that purpose, which I literally purchased them for the plane. So they’re good for what I bought them for but musically there are better headphones out. These only sound good because I fixed the EQ; they should have sounded good right out of the box considering the price. For comparison I tried the Bose equivalent of these and could hear EVERYTHING with the noise cancellation on BUT the Bose sound better musically. These, I can not hear the TV while standing right in front of it at a decent volume. I’d catch these on sale, definitely do not pay full price. I might add that the battery life on these is insane. I can go a month or more on a single charge using these 3-4 days a week for 1-2 hours each of those days. When I say insane….I literally forget where I’ve placed my charger because I don’t use it often.

I don’t know if it was caused by a strongly disability person playing with them or because you have to keep on twisting them to fit them in its case. And turn the touch control on the headphones off or you will accidently turn on the horrid speak-to-chat setting and it is very hard to turn it off again. This setting is the worst headphones could ever have , it stops the sound on your music fully out of control when you don’t want it stopped at all. I don’t know why this horrid annoying settings could be on any headphones but luckily you can fully stop it because I hate that setting. And one more thing, it is good it comes with wired sound as well because Bluetooth does not work properly on many devices. Bluetooth needs to be improved a lot.

I've researched how to fix this issue, most recommended to change the setting in the app from prioritizing the quality of the audio to prioritizing a stable connection which I did, but there was absolutely no improvement.
I probably wouldn't even notice a difference in the quality of the sound, I just want to be able to get through a video or song without having the audio cut out 50 times. I know people that have the XM3's and they don't experience this issue, so it's probably an issue with this generation of the product. I've made sure that the software is updated and everything, so I'm really disappointed :((

I also like how customizable the headphones are with the Sony app. Because each person has a preference on how they like to hear their music you can make it sound how you like it. The work great for exercising you feel like your in your own world with the noise canceling feature. Once you start talking it stop the music. I liked that feature but because I also like to sing I had to turn it off because I couldn’t get through a song without the headphones thinking I was having a conversation. But you have so much control on how you want the headphones to work that it’s a great choice for anyone.

I use them daily for 3+ hours for meetings and streaming music, and they sound as good as the day I bought them even now in March of 2025. I used them for even longer amounts of time when I had to work from home during the pandemic. I'm honestly shocked at how good these still sound, the bass still bumps hard, the noise canceling is stellar, and theyre still in extremely good shape. The leather (or presumably leather) padding along the headband and earmuffs has onky just now started ti wrinkle, and it may not have even started to had I taken the time to care for them properly. A single charge still gives me a weeks worth of charge (spread out). I'm gonna buy the same pair again once these fullt die out. Though, I'm not sure they ever will!! I love these so much!

They are very comfortable in padding and light so little fatigue from wearing. They also fold up into a nice compact shape to transit with.
The sound quality is what Sony always focus on in their audio products first with and this is no exception, from low to mid to treble. Accompanied with great adaptive noise cancelling that either adjusts as it adapts to your surroundings or what ever you would like to manually set it to with the accompanied app. Easy to use and manage.
The sound gets even better if you listen with hi-res formatted music and a cable, make sure you still charge the headset so you get the best sound with the headphones on but also a great back up that if the battery runs out you can still continue listening.
They are durable as well since I bought mine for Chrismas in 2019 and today cannot see any durability issue with them whatsoever, just slight cosmetic marks as I have used them almost everyday from unboxing.
If you are looking for noise cancelling headphones at the moment I can literally only recommend these to any other headphones on the market right now. Period. I am an audiophile and listen to music everyday.

detailedReviews 109: content: These are definitely a fine set of headphones. Having previously owned a white pair that I literally ran into the ground I was looking for a replacement pair. Fortunately for me the came on sale with an additional $70 discount as a Best Buy Member coupled to an additional $10 reward to get a set of these for around $130 was a given for the quality of sound that you get on these cans. I did listen to the MX5 and 6 and cannot discern a significant increase in sound quality.
I also own Sennheiser Momentum 3 and Momentum 4 which are great sounding but are substantially heavier than the Sony’s which is great when when I do my yard work. Hopefully I wont run these to the ground as well as they aren’t my exclusive use …… as an addendum they do have better noise cancellation that the Sennheisers should that be your deciding factor.

detailedReviews 110: content: After about 1 year of normal use (not dropping them, etc), the hinge connecting the headband to the earcup broke, rendering them unusable. Even though they were still within the warranty period, apparently it was not valid. I ended up getting a new pair because the cost of repair was more than half of the original value of the headphones. Within a few months, the exact same thing happened with the new pair! Again, even though the 2 year warranty promises that unless it is your fault, repairs are free, I had to pay for the extremely expensive repair. In conclusion, I would advise people to buy a different brand of headphones from somewhere else as these headphones break very easily and the warranty may as well not exist. Hope this helps! :)

detailedReviews 111: content: Bought these Sony WH1000XM4 a few weeks ago so have not had them for long but can say they provide the best noise cancelling experience I have tried (comparing to 1More Sonoflow, Bose QuietComfort 45, Mackie MC60BT), decent sound quality (with flexibility of EQ), and folding compact design which has been great for daily commute to/from work. I don’t bother with all the smart features like ‘speak to chat’ etc, but it’s all there if you want it via the app!
I was sceptical about buying refurbished but was pleasantly surprised. I bought A grade, and the item and accessories etc were pretty much immaculate, only signs of use were the box was a little scuffed and the earpads had some signs of slight wear. Otherwise perfect.
Only negatives for me so far have been:
1) The battery performance doesn’t seem to be that strong compared to more recent releases from competitors like Sennheiser. I still am getting more than enough battery time for my use case.
2) The ear cups are quite shallow which means it can feel a bit fatiguing after a while (the one area I think the Bose QC45 has the advantage).
Overall I would definitely recommend them if you are interested in strong ANC in an over ear design with lots of features and sound quality I think the average listener will enjoy (and has flexibility of EQ to adjust to subjective tastes).
